Died on this date
Robert Shankland, 80. U.K.-born Canadian military officer. Lieutenant Shankland, a native of Scotland who moved to Canada in 1910, won the Victoria Cross at the World War I Battle of Passchendaele in 1917, and was one of three VC winners who lived on Pine Street in Winnipeg--which was renamed Valour Road in their honour. Mr. Shankland was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel during World War II; after the war, he became the secretary of a securities firm in Vancouver.
