Roy Hartzell batted 2 for 4 with a grand slam, double, base on balls, sacrifice, 2 runs, and 8 runs batted in to help the New York Highlanders rout the St. Louis Browns 12-2 before 1,000 fans at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Ray Caldwell (6-7) pitched a 3-hit complete game victory, and had 3 hits of his own. New York second baseman Stubby Magner batted 1 for 4 with a sacrifice and a run, with 3 assists in the field, in his first major league game.

Babe Ruth hit 2 home runs and a double to lead the New York Yankees past the St. Louis Browns 6-4 before 4,000 fans at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Mr. Ruth's homers gave him a career total of 137, passing Roger Connor for the major league record.

Joe Sargent tripled and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Jim Middleton in the bottom of the 16th inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Athletics at Navin Field in Detroit. Mr. Middleton (4-3) pitched 4 scoreless innings in relief of Dutch Leonard, while Rollie Naylor (2-4) allowed 14 hits and 2 earned runs in a complete game loss.

The Washington Nationals scored 2 runs in the top of the 9th inning and withstood a 3-run rally in the bottom of the 9th as they beat the Chicago White Sox 8-7 at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

Nathan Söderblom, 65. Swedish clergyman. Mr. Söderblom was the Church of Sweden Archbishop of Uppsala from 1914-1931. He led the ecumenical Christian "Life and Work" movement in the 1920s, and was awarded the 1930 Nobel Peace Prize "[F]or his efforts to involve the churches not only in work for ecumenical unity, but also for world peace."

A Gallup Poll reported that 72% of Americans recently questioned said that they preferred to see the U.S.S.R. win the war against Germany, but 47% thought Germany would win. A U.K.-U.S.S.R. agreement for "joint action" was signed in Moscow by Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov and British Ambassador to the U.S.S.R. Sir Stafford Cripps, barring any separate peace with Germany. Germany claimed that "the Stalin Line has been broken at all decisive points," but the Soviet Union denied that such a breakthrough had taken place. Armistice documents between the U.K.-Free French allies and the Vichy French command in Syria were initialled in Acre, Palestine. A Japanese news agency reported that the United Kingdom and Chinese leader Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek had agreed on, but not yet signed, a military alliance, to become effective when Japan started a southward drive in the Pacific.

Ecuador announced its acceptance of a mediation proposal made by the United States, Brazil, and Argentina to settle its border conflict with Peru.

Diplomacy
The U.S. Maritime Commission took over 16 more Danish cargo ships in American ports.

The U.S. National Maritime Union rejected a resolution by Joseph J. Doyle for an outside trial board to investigate charges of Communism against NMU President Joseph Curran. Only two votes were cast in favour of the resolution.

Allie Reynolds (10-5) pitched a no-hitter and Gene Woodling hit a home run in the 7th inning off Bob Feller (12-3) as the New York Yankees edged the Cleveland Indians 1-0 before 39,195 fans at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland.

The Boston Red Sox moved into first place in the American League with a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox before 52,592 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The Red Sox won the first game 3-2 and the second game 5-4 in 17 innings. The White Sox rallied for 2 runs off Mel Parnell (11-5) in the 9th inning of the first game and had runners on first and third bases with 2 out, but relief pitcher Harry Taylor retired Bob Elliott on a ground ball to second base to end the game. Ellis Kinder (5-0) pitched 10 scoreless innings in relief to win the second game, while losing pitcher Saul Rogovin (5-5) pitched the entire 17 innings.

Elmer Valo hit a pair of solo home runs and winning pitcher Alex Kellner (6-6) drove in 3 runs to help the Philadelphia Athletics defeat the St. Louis Browns 9-7 in the first game of a doubleheader before 6,045 fans at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Gus Zernial hit a grand slam as part of a 7-run 3rd inning, while Bobby Shantz (8-6) pitched a 9-hitter, scored 2 runs, and drove in 2 as the Athletics completed the sweep with a 13-0 rout in the second game.

Harry Rice drew a base on balls with 1 out in the top of the 5th inning and Billy Johnson followed with a home run to provide the scoring as the St. Louis Cardinals shut out the New York Giants 2-0 before 13,448 fans at the Polo Grounds in New York. Gerry Staley (12-8) pitched a 4-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Larry Jansen (12-8), who allowed just 3 hits in 8 innings.

Carl Furillo, Billy Cox, and Roy Campanella hit home runs for the Brooklyn Dodgers as they beat the Chicago Cubs 9-3 before 23,365 fans at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. Ralph Branca started on the mound for Brooklyn, but left with a 5-0 lead in the 5th inning because of a sore arm. Clyde King relieved him and allowed 3 runs; Bud Podbielan (1-0) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, and was credited by the official scorer with the win.

Died on this date
Mazo de la Roche, 82. Canadian author and playwright. Miss de la Roche, a native of Newmarket, Ontario, was best known for the novel Jalna (1927) and 15 sequels and prequels through 1960.

Space
The United States launched the weather satellite TIROS 3 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The satellite's mission was obtaining data for a meteorological satellite system and television pictures of clouds. The launch was timed to the hurricane saeason with the hope that it could follow at least one hurricane from its formation.



The United States Air Force launched the satellite MIDAS 3 from Point Arguello, California. It was a forerunner of a satellite system to detect the hot exhaust of a missile launched anywhere on Earth.

Disasters
The Indian city of Pune flooded due to failure of the Khadakwasla and Panshet dams, killing at least 2,000 people.

ČSA Flight 511, an Ilyushin II-18 en route from Zurich to Rabat, crashed at Casablanca–Anfa Airport in Morocco, killing all 72 people aboard.

Yvon Robert, 56. Canadian wrestler. Mr. Robert, a native of Verdun, Quebec, wrestled professionally with various circuits in central Canada and the eastern United States from 1932-1959. He fought Gorgeous George to a draw in Montreal in 1948, and teamed with Whipper Billy Watson to win the Canadian tag team title in 1953. Mr. Robert died at his home in Laval, Quebec.

Died on this date
Hal Pawson, 65. Canadian journalist. Mr. Pawson wrote for the Regina Leader-Post, Sudbury Star, Vancouver News-Herald, and United Press International before joining The Edmonton Journal in 1941. In 1942 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force to serve in World War II, and returned to the Journal in 1946. Mr. Pawson eventually became the paper's sports editor and lead sports columnist, remaining there until 1966. In 1968 he became the city of Edmonton's director of public relations, a position he held until 1976 except for a time in the 1970s when he was the executive director of Edmonton's hosting of the 1978 Commonwealth Games.

Albert Brown returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, and the Roughriders jumped out to a 20-0 lead before the Eskimos came back to win their first regular season game under new head coach--and former Saskatchewan quarterback and head coach--Ron Lancaster. Roughrider quarterback Kent Austin suffered a bruised sternum when hit by Eskimo linebacker Larry Wruck in the 2nd quarter, and missed the rest of that game and the next six, which had a devastating effect on the Roughriders' playoff chances. Blake Marshall scored a touchdown for the Eskimos on the last play as they won their first game at Taylor Field in four years.
