Harold “Pie” Traynor, 73. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Traynor played third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1920-1935 and 1937, batting .320 in 1,941 games. He led the National League in triples in 1923, and in fielding percentage in 1925, the year the Pirates overcame a 3 games to 1 deficit to defeat the Washington Nationals to win the World Series. Mr. Traynor was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1948.

Roger Lemelin, 72. Canadian author and journalist. Mr. Lemelin wrote the novel Les Plouffe (1948), which inspired a long-running CBC/Radio-Canada television series. He was publisher of the Montreal newspaper La Presse from 1972-1981.

Isaias Duarte Cancino, 63. Colombian clergyman. An outspoken Roman Catholic archbishop, Mr. Duarte was gunned down outside his church in Cali after performing a wedding.
