Born on this date
Gustáv Husák. President of Czechoslovakia, 1975-1989. Mr. Husák succeeded Alexander Dubček as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in 1969, reversing Mr. Dubček's reforms from the "Prague Spring" in 1968. Mr. Husák was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on January 9, 1983, the day before his 70th birthday. He died on November 18, 1991.
Mehmet Shehu. Premier of Albania, 1954-1981. Mr. Shehu, a Communist, shared power with Enver Hoxha before reportedly committing suicide on December 17, 1981 at the age of 68.

U.S. President Warren G. Harding ordered the withdrawal of American troops from Germany. A post-Great War occupation force of 16,000 had been stationed in Germany since the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, and had been based in Coblenz.
The Klaipeda Revolt continued as Lithuania seized and annexed the Klaipėda Region (Memel Territory).
