The girl's parents had decided on a program of limited treatment, but rejected surgery, without which she would die within two years, according to her doctors. The doctors had said that even with surgery the girl would be severely retarded and bedridden. Judge Wexler asserted that the parents' decision "to refuse to the surgical procedure was a reasonable one based on due consideration of the medical options available and on a genuine concern for the best interests of the child."

Grey Cup @ Taylor Field, Regina
Edmonton 34 Montreal 22
Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray completed 22 of 32 passes for 301 yards and 2 touchdowns, rushed for a touchdown of his own, and handed off to Mike Pringle for another TD as the Eskimos defeated the Alouettes before 50,909 fans to win the Grey Cup for the first time in 10 years. The Eskimos led 7-0 after the 1st quarter on Mr. Pringle's 4-yard touchdown rush, converted by Sean Fleming. They made it 14-0 when Mr. Ray completed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jason Tucker, converted by Mr. Fleming at 2:42 of the 2nd quarter. Montreal got on the scoreboard with a 4-yard touchdown pass from running back Deonce Whitaker to Pat Woodcock, converted by former Eskimo Matt Kellett with 5:26 remaining in the 1st half. The touchdown was set up by a spectacular one-handed catch of a pass from quarterback Anthony Calvillo by Ben Cahoon, a play which is still shown in highlight packages today. Just 2:11 after their first touchdown, the Alouettes struck again; Mr. Calvillo connected with Sylvain Girard for a 32-yard TD, converted by Mr. Kellett with 3:15 remaining in the half to tie the game 14-14. Mr. Ray then found Mr. Tucker for a 15-yard touchdown, converted by Mr. Fleming with 1:23 left to give the Eskimos a 21-14 lead. Mr. Calvillo responded with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Mr. Cahoon just 33 seconds later, and Mr. Kellett's convert tied the game 21-21 with 50 seconds left. The Eskimos came back to take a 24-21 halftime lead on a 27-yard field goal by Mr. Fleming with 11 seconds remaining. Mr. Kellett's 75-yard punt single provided the only scoring of the 3rd quarter, and the Eskimos extended their lead with Mr. Ray's 1-yard touchdown rush. Mr. Fleming's convert made the score 31-22 at 1:54 of the 4th quarter. The Alouettes were unable to score again, and Mr. Fleming put the game out of reach with a 17-yard field goal with 29 seconds remaining in regulation time. Mr. Tucker, who caught 7 passes for 132 yards, was named the game's most valuable player, while Mr. Cahoon, who caught 6 passes for 148 yards, was named the outstanding Canadian. Mr. Calvillo completed 22 of 37 passes for 371 yards and 2 touchdowns. Mr. Pringle carried 17 times for 70 yards, giving him a career record of 393 yards rushing in Grey Cup play. The Alouettes rushed just 9 times for 44 yards, with Eric Lapointe leading the team with 23 yards on 5 carries. Montreal's Jeremaine Copeland caught 8 passes for 102 yards. Montreal head coach Don Matthews was heavily criticized for starting rookies Brandon Williams and D.J. Johnson at the cornerback positions. Had Edmonton wide receiver Ed Hervey not left the game in the 2nd quarter with an injury after catching 3 passes for 48 yards, the Eskimos probably would have exploited the rookies' inexperience for greater totals. The game marked the successful conclusion of the 17-year CFL career of Edmonton guard Leo Groenewegen, who had never before played with a Grey Cup championship team, and whose only previous Grey Cup experience had been in the previous year's 25-16 loss to the Alouettes in Edmonton.
