. U.S. actor. He was perhaps best known for his regular television role as Harry Morton, the next door neighbour, in The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show from 1951-1953. Jay Berwanger. U.S. football player. Mr. Berwanger was a halfback with the University of Chicago who, in 1935, became the first winner of the Downtown Athletic Club Trophy--renamed the Heisman Trophy the following year--as the most outstanding player in U.S. college football. He followed that achievement with another first, becoming the first player ever drafted in the National Football League's draft of college players. Mr. Berwanger was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1936, but the Eagles, doubtful of meeting his salary demands, traded him to the Chicago Bears. Mr. Berwanger and the Bears were unable to agree on a salary, and he retired from football permanently, eventually disappearing from sports completely. He died on June 26, 2002 at the age of 88.

Lloyd Gaines, 27 or 28
. U.S. student and civil rights activist. Mr. Gaines, a Negro, filed suit against the University of Missouri after being denied admission to its law school because of his race. The U.S. Supreme Court, in Gaines v. Canada (1938), ruled in his favour, deciding that the "separate but equal" doctrine required the university either admit Mr. Gaines or set up a separate law school for Negroes. The state of Missouri responded by creating Lincoln University School of Law. Mr. Gaines, while waiting for classes to begin, travelled to various cities, working at odd jobs and making speeches. He was last seen leaving a fraternity house in Chicago, ostensibly to buy stamps. Mr. Gaines' disappearance wasn't immediately reported, since he was in the habit of travelling by himself for long periods of time without informing anyone. Mr. Gaines was never seen again, although rumours persist that he ended up in Mexico.

Edward Platt, 58
. U.S. actor. Mr. Platt trained as an opera singer and was scheduled to make his professional debut in a production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado in Baltimore, but in a classic example of bad timing, the show opened--and closed--on December 8, 1941. The Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7 probably had something to do with the show's cancellation. Mr. Platt hosted the children's television program Uncle Eddie's Birthday Party in Midland, Texas in the early 1950s before appearing as a character actor in movies such as Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and North by Northwest (1959), and in numerous television programs. He became famous for playing the Chief of Control in the television comedy series Get Smart (1965-1970). Mr. Platt's death was reported as a heart attack, but more recently, his son said that the cause of death was suicide, resulting from depression exacerbated by financial reversals and an inability to find steady work in recent years.
