William Lyne
. Australian politician. Sir William began his career in New South Wales politics as a member of the Protectionist Party, and was elected party leader in 1895, serving as N.S.W. Leader of the Opposition before serving as Premier from 1899-1901. With the Australian colonies due to unite in a federation in January 1901, Governor General Lord Hopetoun asked Sir William to become Prime Minister of an interim government; however, Sir William was unable to form a government, and returned the commission to Lord Hopetoun. Sir William resigned as Premier of New South Wales to enter federal politics, and represented Hume in the Australian Parliament from 1901-1913, holding several cabinet posts. He died on August 3, 1913 at the age of 69, a few months after losing his seat in the 1913 federal election.

Standard Oil Company of New Jersey Vice President Eugene Holman said that U.S. oil reserves were "sufficient for a thousand years."

Energy
U.S Solid Fuels Administrator Harold Ickes predicted tighter restrictions on the use of coal during the next winter because of shortages resulting from the drafting of young miners into the armed services.

Hudson Fysh, 79
. Australian aviator and aviation executive. Sir Hudson was a soldier and later a pilot during World War I. In 1920 he became one of the founders of the Australian airline Qantas. He eventually became the airline's managing director and chairman, retiring in 1966.

Politics and government
A coalition cabinet consisting of five members each from the neutralist and rightist Vientiane and pro-Communist Pathet Lao factions was installed in Laos.

Baseball
Mel Stottlemyre won the pitchers' duel over Gaylord Perry as the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 6-1 before 20,744 fans in the Yankees' first home game at Shea Stadium, which was their home for two seasons while Yankee Stadium was being renovated. Graig Nettles hit a 2-run home run for the Yankees.

The Minnesota Twins set a team record for runs in a game as they routed the Kansas City Royals 23-6 at Royals Stadium.

Ral Donner, 41
. U.S. singer. Mr. Donner had a voice that sounded like that of Elvis Presley, which enabled him to achieve several hit singles in the early 1960s. His biggest hit was You Don't Know What You've Got (Until You Lose It), which reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1961. Mr. Donner died of lung cancer.

Space
The U.S. space shuttle Challenger was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida to begin mission STS-41-C (originally numbered STS-13), with a five-man crew commanded by Robert Crippen.

World events
Members of Cameroon's Republican Guard unsuccessfully attempted to overthrow the government of President Paul Biya.

Defense
Reports began to appear that U.S. Central Intelligence Agency personnel on a ship operating in the Pacific Ocean off the Nicaraguan coast had helped Latin American nationals to plant mines in the ports of Corinto and Puerto Sandino. The mining, which had begun in February, had resulted in damage to at least eight ships--including a Soviet tanker--from six nations.

Economics and finance
The United States Labor Department reported that the unemployment rate was holding steady at 7.7% in March.

The U.S. Federal Reserve Board voted to raise the interest rate it charged on loans to financial institutions from 8.5%-9%, the first change in the rate since December 1982.

At a state dinner, Mr. Gorbachev called himself a "confirmed opponent" of nuclear weapons.

Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, meeting with U.S. President George Bush in Washington, said that Israel would be willing to hold elections in the occupied territories that could lead to a "self-governing administration."

Labour
The British government of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher announced plans to abolish legislation to guarantee jobs for more than 9,000 dock workers.

Juvénal Habyarimana, 57
. 3rd President of Rwanda, 1973-1994; Cyprien Ntaryamira, 39. 5th President of Burundi, 1994. Messrs. Habyarimana and Ntaryamira (who had taken office as President of Burundi on February 5, 1994) were killed when the plane they were in crashed in the Rwandan capital of Kigali. They were returning from Tanzania after attending a conference with other African leaders that had sought to end the war in Rwanda and Burundi between the Hutu and Tutsi tribes. Burundi's Ambassador to the United Nations claimed that the plane had been shot down by rocket fire. The event sparked further fighting between the ethnic groups, resulting in 20,000 deaths within a week.

Terrorism
Seven people were killed in Afula, Israel when a Palestinian driving a car outfitted with a bomb drove into a school bus.

Law
Harry Blackmun, 85, announced his retirement after 14 years on the Supreme Court of the United States. He had been appointed to the Supreme Court by President Richard Nixon in 1970, and had written the majority judgment in Roe v. Wade (1973), which had struck down all laws in the United States prohibiting abortion.

. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Berberet was a catcher with the New York Yankees (1954-1955); Washington Nationals/Senators (1956-1958); Boston Red Sox (1958); and Detroit Tigers (1959-1960), batting .230 with 31 home runs and 153 runs batted in in 448 games.

Niki Sullivan, 66. U.S. musician. Mr. Sullivan was a guitarist with the rock and roll band the Crickets from 1956-1958, when Buddy Holly was the group's leader.

War
About a dozen U.S. soldiers were killed in a battle with Sunni insurgents in Ramadi, Iraq.

Politics and government
Lithuanian President Rolandas Paksas was removed from office after a close impeachment vote. An earlier parliamentary report had called Mr. Paskas a threat to national security and had charged that his office was under the influence of criminals and shady political lobbyists.

Terrorism
Jordan's military court convicted eight Muslims and sentenced them to death for the 2002 killing of U.S. aid official Laurence Foley in a terror conspiracy linked to al-Qaida.

Basketball
NCAA
The University of Connecticut became the first school to win Division I men's and women's titles in the same season as the women's team beat Tennessee 70-61 for their third consecutive championship.
