William Southam. Canadian journalist. Mr. Southam, a native of Montreal, began his career with the London Free Press, and eventually bought the Hamilton Spectator; Ottawa Citizen; Edmonton Journal; Calgary Herald; Winnipeg Tribune; Windsor Star; and Montreal Gazette. He died in Hamilton on February 27, 1932 at the age of 88.

Crime
Five minutes after an $18,000 payroll had been delivered at 10 A.M. in an armoured car at the Surface and Transportation Company garage in the Bronx, New York, four armed thugs held up the office force and seized the money. Through a hail of bullets from a riot gun, they escaped in a sedan, but only after they had wounded one man, nearly run down another, wrecked their automobile and commandeered a second one, out of which they shoved a young man and a woman.

The Russian city of Kharkov was liberated as a result of the Battle of Kursk, in which Soviet forces decisively defeated the Germans. In their fourth summer offensive, Soviet troops drove into the Donets Basin south of Izyum. Japanese bombers attacked Chungking for the first time since August 31, 1941.
