Baseball

The Cincinnati Reds refused to play a makeup game at Avenue Grounds in Cincinnati against the Chicago White Stockings after a downpour of rain. The White Stockings then appointed one of their travelling party as umpire, and he declared the game a 9-0 forfeit for Chicago. The decision was upheld at National League meetings in December.

Camillien Houde
. Canadian politician. Mr. Houde served in the Quebec Legislative Assembly as a member of the Conservative Party from 1923-1927 and 1928-1931, leading the party from 1929-1932. He was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as an independent candidate in 1949, aand represented the Quebec riding of Papineau until 1953. Mr. Houde's involvement in provincial and federal politics didn't prevent him from running for civic office at the same time, and he served as mayor of Montreal from 1928-1932; 1934-1936; 1938-1940; and 1944-1954. He spent the years 1940-1944 interned at Camp Petawawa, Ontario for his opposition to conscription during World War II and his openly Fascist sympathies. Mr. Houde died on September 11, 1958 at the age of 69.

Technology
William Gray of Hartford, Connecticut was granted United States Patent Number 408,709 for "Coin-controlled apparatus for telephones."

Baseball
Ned Hanlon began a 19-year career as a major league manager by leading the Pittsburgh Alleghenys to a 9-0 win over the Boston Beaneaters at Recreation Park in Pittsburgh, knocking the Beaneaters out of first place in the National League for the first time since May 11.

Alfred Hitchcock
. U.K.-born U.S. film director. The Master of Suspense, who directed 53 feature films, 2 short films, and 20 television episodes, was born in Leytonstone, a district in London’s east end. After more than a decade of success in directing motion pictures in Britain, he moved to Hollywood. Sir Alfred's achievements are too numerous to mention here. He died on April 29, 1980 at the age of 80.

Rex Humbard
. U.S. televangelist. Mr. Humbard, born in Little Rock, Arkansas, but based in Akron, Ohio, made his first appearance on television in 1949, and became the first televangelist in the United States to have a weekly program, which ran from 1953-1982. His $4-million, 5,400-seat Cathedral of Tomorrow in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, which opened in 1958, was built to accommodate television.Mr. Humbard's program was internationally broadcast and his ministry became a big business, but in 1973 Mr. Humbard ran into problems with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission because bonds and promissory notes that he had sold since 1959 were sold by his own salesmen, and were not registered with the SEC or sold through licensed brokers. A planned revolving restaurant was never built, and a transmission tower was eventually sold to a local businessman. Mr. Humbard eventually retired to Florida, and his son Rex, Jr. took over the ministry. What remained of the Cathedral of Tomorrow was sold to notorious fraud and fellow Akronite Ernest Angley in 1994. Mr. Humbard died of congestive heart failure on September 21, 2007 at the age of 88; for more on him, the false gospel that he preached, and his scandals, go here.

George Shearing. U.K.-born U.S. musician. Sir George was a jazz pianist and bandleader who composed standards such as Lullaby of Birdland and had a recording career spanning more than 50 years. He became an American citizen in 1956. Sir George was knighted in 2007, and died on February 14, 2011 at the age of 91.

Horse racing
Man o’War suffered his only defeat, finishing second to Upset in the Sanford Memorial at Saratoga, New York. His narrow defeat was mainly the result of an improper start (this was back in the days before starting gates were used to ensure a fair start).

The New York Giants hit 7 home runs, including 3 in a row in the 4th inning, in an 11-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the first game of a doubleheader before 10,853 fans at the Polo Grounds in New York. The Giants completed the sweep with a 6-2 win in the second game.

The New York Yankees and Philadelphia Athletics split a doubleheader before 34,570 fans at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. The Athletics won the opener 12-9, and the Yankees won the second game 21-0 in a game that was called after 8 innings because of a 7 P.M. curfew. Joe DiMaggio and Babe Dahlgren each hit 2 home runs in the second game, and each hit a home run inside-the-park.

Soviet troops in Poland smashed to within 11 miles northeast of Warsaw by taking Moskowka. U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Chester Nimitz said that a combination of a sea blockade and aerial bombardments may force Japan to surrender before an invasion of the Japanese home islands took place.

The defending Grey Cup champion Blue Bombers ruined the head coaching debut of Wayne Robinson, who had been an assistant coach with Bud Grant in Winnipeg in 1957. This was the first CFL game in the Hall of Fame career of B.C. running back Willie Fleming. It was also the first appearance as a Lion for Vancouver native Ted Tully, who had come to his hometown in a trade with the Edmonton Eskimos for offensive end and punter Vic Chapman. Mr. Tully had spent 9 seasons as a linebacker with the Eskimos, and played for their Grey Cup championship teams in 1954-1956. He brought some much-needed experience and leadership to the Lions.

The Chicago Cubs hit 5 home runs in a 20-9 win over the San Francisco Giants before 17,963 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago in a game that took 3 hours and 50 minutes to play, then a record for a 9-inning game. George Altman batted 5 for 6 with 2 homers, 3 runs, and 5 runs batted in, and Alvin Dark hit a grand slam for the Cubs. The Giants used 7 pitchers, the Cubs 4; Don Elston, the fourth Chicago pitcher, pitched the last 5 innings and was credited with a save.

The Cincinnati Reds took an 8-0 lead after 4 innings, and barely held on to beat the Milwaukee Braves 9-8 before 9,174 fans at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Frank Robinson drove in 5 runs for the Reds with a grand slam and a sacrifice fly. The Braves outhit the Reds 17-12.

The Los Angeles Dodgers withstood a 5-run 9th-inning rally to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 before 15,140 fans at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Gene Oliver led of the bottom of the 9th inning with a home run and pinch hitter George Crowe hit a grand slam with none out. The Cardinals had runners on first and second bases with 2 out, but Mr. Oliver struck out to end the game.

Harmon Killebrew batted 3 for 4 and drove in 2 runs with a pair of doubles to help the Washington Senators defeat the New York Yankees 5-2 before 18,366 fans at Yankee Stadium.

Early Wynn pitched a 3-hitter to improve his 1959 record to 16-7 and singled in a run as the Chicago White Sox routed the Detroit Tigers 9-0 before 9,894 fans at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. Jim Landis hit a 3-run home run and Bubba Phillips added a solo homer in the 1st inning to give Chicago a 4-0 lead, and Earl Torgeson and Sherm Lollar hit home runs later in the game.

Woodie Held hit a 3-run home run in the 2nd inning and doubled in a run to climax a 4-run 8th-inning rally to help the Cleveland Indians defeat the Kansas City Athletics 7-5 before 12,510 fans at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City. Jack Harshman (3-9) pitched a 7-hit complete game victory.

Bowie Kuhn was elected commissioner of baseball by unanimous vote of major league owners.

Jim Palmer improved his 1969 record to 11-2 with a no-hitter, and batted 2 for 3 with a double, run, and run batted in as the Baltimore Orioles shut out the Oakland Athletics 8-0 before 16,826 fans at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Brooks Robinson's 3-run home run was the big hit in a 5-run 7th inning.

Rich Reese batted 4 for 4 with 2 home runs and 3 runs batted to help the Minnesota Twins beat the New York Yankees 5-2 before 15,453 fans at Yankee Stadium. Tom Hall (5-4) pitched a 7-hit complete game to win the pitching matchup over Mel Stottlemyre (16-9).

Johnny Bench’s grand slam off Elroy Face with 2 out in the top of the 11th inning provided insurance runs for the Cincinnati Reds in an 8-3 win over the Montreal Expos before 17,162 fans at Jarry Park in Montreal. Mr. Face had just entered the game in relief of Dick Radatz, who had just walked Lee May to load the bases after throwing wild pitch that allowed Pete Rose to score the eventual winning run. Messrs. Face and Radatz had been dominant relievers earlier in the 1960s, but both were at the end of the road when they played for Montreal.

Hank Aaron batted 3 for 3 with a base on balls, 2 home runs and 3 runs batted in to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader before 11,957 fans at Atlanta Stadium. Deron Johnson hit a solo homer for the Phillies, and added a solo homer in the second game to help the Phillies win 7-0, behind the 6-hit pitching of Jerry Johnson.

Denis Menke hit a 3-run home run in the 1st inning and singled in a run as part of a 5-run 3rd as the Houston Astros beat the New York Mets 8-2 before 30,590 fans at the Astrodome. Larry Dierker (14-9) pitched a 5-hit complete game victory.

Crime
The United States Justice Department filed a civil suit against the city of Philadelphia, mayor Frank Rizzo, and 20 high-ranking police and city officials, charging "widespread and severe" police brutality. In the first suit of its kind against a whole police department rather than individual officers, the Justice Dept. charged Philadelphia police with shooting non-violent suspects; abusing handcuffed prisoners; suppressing dissension within its ranks; and harassing its critics. According to the Justice Department, Philadelphia police officers shot approximately 75 people each year, and were the objects of 1,100 complaints annually. Mayor Rizzo, who served as police commissioner from 1967-1971, said that the suit was a politically-inspired move by the administration of President Jimmy Carter, which he said was seeking to "regroup" the support of black and liberal voters.

Diplomacy
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young met with Israeli delegate to the UN Yehuda Blum, and told him that he had discussed Security Council business at his unauthorized meeting on July 26 with Zehdi Labib Terzi, the Palestine Liberation Organization’s UN observer.

Disasters
5 workmen were killed and 15 injured when the roof of an $8 million stadium under construction near O'Hare International Airport in Illinois collapsed.

Lou Brock‚ 40‚ collected his 3‚000th major league career hit‚ an infield single off Dennis Lamp‚ to lead off the bottom of the 4th inning for the St. Louis Cardinals as they edged the Chicago Cubs 3-2 before 44,457 fans at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis. With 1 out and nobody on base in the bottom of the 9th, Ken Reitz singled, and Tom Herr made his major league debut as a pinch runner for Mr. Reitz. Mr. Herr advanced to third base on a single by pinch hitter Dane Iorg and scored on a sacrifice fly by Garry Templeton to give the Cardinals the win.



Pinch hitter Ben Oglivie hit a solo home run with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals before 12,578 fans at County Stadium in Milwaukee. Jim Slaton (12-6) pitched an 8-hit complete game victory.

With 2 out and nobody on base in the bottom of the 8th inning, Willie Randolph walked, stole second base, and scored on a single by Oscar Gamble to break a 2-2 tie as the New York Yankees edged the Texas Rangers 3-2 before 24,977 fans at Yankee Stadium. Larkin Smith, 45
. U.S. politician. Mr. Smith, a Republican Party member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Mississippi who had been in office since January, was killed in the crash of a small plane near New Augusta, Mississippi. Rep. Smith died the day that the wreckage of the plane that had been carrying Rep. Mickey Leland of Texas was found in Ethiopia, six days after it crashed.

Tim Richmond, 34. U.S. auto racing driver. Mr. Richmond finished 9th in the 1980 Indianapolis 500 and was named the race's Rookie of the Year. He moved to the NASCAR circuit shortly after, and drove stock cars for the rest of his career. Mr. Richmond's best year was 1986, when he won seven races. He then began to suffer the effects of AIDS, which shortened his career and eventually took his life.

War
Syrian troops, supported by Druze and Palestinian fighters, attacked the Christian stronghold in East Beirut with tanks and infantry.

Golf
Payne Stewart won the PGA Championship at Kemper Lake Golf Course in Hawthorne Woods, Illinois by shooting 31 on the last 9 holes and overtaking 10 other players with a final-round 5-under-par score of 67 to finish with a 12-under-par total score of 276, a stroke ahead of Andy Bean, Mike Reid, and Curtis Strange. First prize money was $200,000.

Ed Hervey caught the other Eskimo touchdown pass, while Sean Millington carried 18 times for 98 yards and a touchdown. The other Eskimo major came on a fumble return by rookie defensive lineman Tyrone Hines. Jon Baker added 4 field goals and 6 converts. Deland McCullough carried 29 times for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Blue Bombers, and added 40 yards on 3 pass receptions.

The Montreal Expos swept two games from the Colorado Rockies 14-13 in 10 innings and 8-6 before crowds of 40,092 and 45,643, respectively, at Coors Field in Denver. The teams combined to hit 12 home runs in the doubleheader. Alfonso Marquez made his major league debut as the home plate umpire for the second game.

Matt Stairs batted 3 for 5 with 2 home runs--including a grand slam--and 5 runs batted in to help the Oakland Athletics defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-8 before 34,150 fans at SkyDome in Toronto. The teams combined to hit 8 home runs.

The New York Yankees scored 6 runs in the 3rd inning, 4 in the 4th, and 4 in the 6th as they routed the Minnesota Twins 14-2 before 44,568 fans at Yankee Stadium. New York leadoff hitter Chuck Knoblauch batted 3 for 6 with 3 runs, and hit a grand slam in the 6th.

. U.S. basketball player. Mr. Felton was a guard at Louisiana Tech University (2001-2003) before playing professionally with six different teams in Turkey, Greece, France, and Germany (2003-2009). He died the day after being shot in the head while sitting in the driver's seat of his car at a gas station in Milwaukee.

Ricky Ray's 23-yard touchdown pass to Fred Stamps with 9 seconds remaining in regulation time gave the Eskimos their win over the Stampeders before 33,065 fans at Commonwealth Stadium in one of the best games this blogger ever attended. The winning score came just 29 seconds after Calgary had taken the lead on a 20-yard pass from Henry Burris to Jeremaine Copeland. Mr. Ray completed 28 of 37 passes for 342 yards and 3 touchdowns, connecting with Mr. Stamps for a 49-yard TD late in the 1st quarter, and Maurice Mann for an 11-yard TD with 3:35 remaining in the 4th quarter to give Edmonton its first lead. Mr. Ray also rushed 5 times for 52 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown late in the 1st half. Arkee Whitlock rushed 9 times for 106 yards to lead the Edmonton ground game, and Calvin McCarty added a 6-yard TD run. Mr. Burris completed 30 of 45 passes for 479 yards and touchdowns of 10 yards to Teyo Johnson in the 1st quarter and 11 yards to Mr. Copeland in the 2nd. Jon Cornish added a 12-yard TD rush for Calgary. Mr. Stamps led Edmonton receivers with 94 yards on 5 receptions.
