Anne of Cleves. Queen consort of England, 1540. Anne, a native of Dusseldorf, was the fourth wife of King Henry VIII and was queen consort from January 6-July 9, 1540. The marriage was annulled, having never been consummated. Anne received a generous settlement and died on July 16, 1557 at the age of 41, most likely of cancer.

John D. White, 43. U.S. politician. Mr. White, a Whig, served in the Kentucky House of Representatives (1832-1835), and represented Kentucky's 9th District (1835-1843) and 6th District (1843-1845) in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving as Speaker of the House (1841-1843). He accepted a judgeship in 1845, but committed suicide by shooting himself in the head, shortly after it was revealed that he had plagiarized by former U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr.

Paul Muni. Austro-Hungarian-born U.S. actor. Mr. Muni, born Frederich Meshilem Meier Weisenfreund, moved to Chicago with his parents in 1902. Yiddish was his first language, and he began his career in Yiddish theatre before moving to Broadway in 1926 and then to Hollywood in 1929. Mr. Muni won the Academy Award for his starring performance in The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936), and was nominated for Oscars for The Valiant (1929); I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932); The Life of Emile Zola (1937); and The Last Angry Man (1959). He died on August 25, 1967 at the age of 71.

The Chicago White Sox traded first baseman Deron Johnson to the Boston Red Sox for cash and a player to be named later. Mr. Johnson had played 11 games with the Red Sox at the end of the 1974 season, but had then been released and signed by the White Sox. In 148 games with Chicago in 1975, Mr. Johnson was batting .232 with 18 home runs and 72 runs batted in. The Red Sox assigned catcher Chuck Erickson to the Denver Bears of the AAA American Association on November 7 to complete the deal. Mr. Erickson batted .202 with 2 home runs and 14 runs batted in in 53 games with the Pawtucket Red Sox of the AAA International League in 1975.

Early that morning, Yankee manager Billy Martin suffered a broken right arm, a bruised right side, and some cuts in a drunken wrestling match with pitcher Ed Whitson at the Cross Keys Inn in Baltimore. Mr. Whitson, who had been having words with a hotel guest when Mr. Martin intervened, ended up with a cracked rib and a split lip. In the middle of the fight, Mr. Martin said, "What’s the matter with him? Can’t he hold his liquor?"

Luis Salazar hit a 2-run home run off Jay Howell with 2 out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Chicago White Sox a 7-5 win over the Oakland Athletics before 15,770 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

Shortstop Julio Franco's error on a ground ball by Rod Carew allowed Rufino Linares to score the winning run with 1 out in the bottom of the 12th inning as the California Angels edged the Cleveland Indians 10-9 before 47,895 fans at Anaheim Stadium and took a 1-game lead over the Kansas City Royals in the American League West Division pennant race.

Mr. Jolliet explored the coast of Labrador in 1694, and left for Anicosti Island in northern New France in May 1700, but he disappeared from the historical record by the time a mass was said on his behalf on September 15, 1600, shortly before he would have turned 55.

Charles William Train. U.K. soldier. Sergeant Train was a corporal with the British Army at the time he engaged enemy forces near Jerusalem on December 8, 1917, killing or wounding all the enemy troops, thus earning the Victoria Cross. He died in Vancouver, British Columbia on March 28, 1965 at the age of 74.

Socks Seibold, 69. U.S. baseball pitcher. Harry Seibold began his career as a shortstop with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1915 before switching to the mound with the Athletics (1916-1917, 1919) and Boston Braves (1929-1933). He compiled a pitching record of 48-85 with an earned run average of 4.43 in 191 games, and batted .192 with 1 home run and 27 runs batted in in 207 games. Mr. Seibold died three days after the 50th anniversary of his first major league game.

Jim Pagliaroni hit a 2-run home run off Dave Eilers with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 6-5 win over the New York Mets before 4,660 fans at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.

Ray Sadecki allowed 5 hits in 8 1/3 innings and doubled in a run as the St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Houston Astros 3-0 before 4,348 fans at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. St. Louis third baseman Phil Gagliano batted 1 for 3 with a base on balls, and drove in the final run with a ground out. The Astros loaded the bases with 1 out in the top of the 9th inning, but relief pitcher Hal Woodeshick induced Norm Miller to ground into a double play to end the game.

Gates Brown's grand slam was the big blow in a 5-run 3rd inning as the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 6-2 before 6,780 fans at Tiger Stadium. All 5 Detroit runs in the 3rd inning came with 2 out and were unearned as the result of an error by starting and losing pitcher Joe Horlen. Denny McLain pitched a 7-hit complete game victory, striking out 12 batters. Former Detroit ace Frank Lary pitched the 5th and 6th innings for Chicago, allowing 2 hits and 1 earned run in the 362nd and final game of his 12-year major league career.

Horace Clarke drove in 5 runs with a ground out in the 3rd inning and a grand slam in the 4th as the New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians 9-4 before 7,222 fans at Yankee Stadium. Mel Stottlemyre pitched a 5-hit complete game victory to improve his 1965 record to 19-8. Dave Hadden rushed 2 yards for a touchdown with 24 seconds remaining in the game to give the Argonauts their win over the Stampeders before 36,410 fans at CNE Stadium. Mr. Hadden's touchdown climaxed a 73-yard drive led by quarterback Bill Bynum, and came just 1 minute 25 seconds after Calgary quarterback Joe Pisarcik had rushed 1 yard for a TD to give the Stampeders the lead. It was the first CFL game for Toronto running back Dickie Morton, who rushed 13 times for 41 yards and a touchdown, and caught 6 passes for 66 yards. Calgary's Tom Forzani led all receivers with 7 receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown. Toronto defensive lineman Joe Sullivan spent the second half of the game on the bench with a sprained ankle in his only CFL game. It was the last game for Jim Wood as Calgary's head coach; he was fired several days later and replaced by assistant coach Bob Baker.



Jack Abendschan's 38-yard field goal with 42 seconds remaining in the game gave the Roughriders their tie against the Tiger-Cats before 18,964 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. The Tiger-Cats led 28-17 with just over 4 minutes remaining, but rookie Hamilton running back Angelo Santucci fumbled, and Saskatchewan defensive back Ted Dushinski returned the ball 52 yards for a touchdown, and quarterback Ron Lancaster passed to Steve Molnar for a 2-point convert with 4:10 remaining. Mr. Santucci had the best game of his career, rushing 19 times for 108 yards and a 25-yard touchdown. Saskatchewan fullback George Reed rushed 21 times for 100 yards and a touchdown. Hamilton's Speedy Thomas caught 8 passes for 95 yards in his first CFL game.

Born on this date
Matthias Erzberger. German politician. Mr. Erzberger was a schoolteacher and publicist before becoming a prominent member of the Catholic Centre Party; he was first elected to the Reichstag in 1903, and became a member of the Fraktionsführung, the leadership of the parliamentary party--in 1912. Mr. Erzberger initially supported the German war effort in World War I, but opposed the policy of unrestricted submarine warfare in 1917, and made political attempts to achieve peace. He became Secretary of State in October 1918, headed the German delegation to the Armistice talks, and, on behalf of Germany, signed the Armistice on November 11, 1918, ending the fighting in World War I. Mr. Erzberger served in the cabinet of President Freidrich Ebert as Vice-Chancellor (June-October 1919) and Reich Minister of Finance (June 1919-March 1920), increasing the central government's power over taxation and redistributing the tax burden in favour of the lower and middle classes. He was re-elected to the Reichstag in June 1920, but acceded to the wish of his party to abstain from further participation in the cabinet. Right-wing Germans regarded Mr. Erzberger as a traitor for his economic policies and his signing of the Armistice. While out for a walk in Bad Griesbach on August 26, 1921, 25 days before his 46th birthday, he was shot to death by former Navy officers Heinrich Tillessen and Heinrich Schulz, members of the death squad Organisation Consul; the assassins were later smuggled into Hungary, and weren't prosecuted until after World War II.

Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton. U.S. musician and composer. Mr. Morton, a native of New Orleans, was one of the 20th century's most noted ragtime and blues pianists. His compositions included Jelly Roll Blues; King Porter Stomp; Wolverine Blues; and Black Bottom Stomp. Mr. Morton never fully recovered from a stabbing in 1938, and died in Los Angeles on July 10, 1941 at the age of 50, after suffering from respiratory problems.

Malik Meraj Khalid. Prime Minister of Pakistan, 1996-1997. Mr. Khalid, a Marxist philosopher who was one of the founders of the Pakistan Peoples Party, held various offices before serving as Prime Minister during the interim between the dismissal of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in November 1996 and the general election of February 3, 1997. He died on June 13, 2003 at the age of 87.

K.H. Ting. Chinese clergyman. Mr. Ting, an Anglican Bishop in the 1940s and '50s, served as President of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement and the China Christian Council, bodies approved by the Communist government. He was a teacher of false doctrine who promoted the New Age "cosmic Christ" theology popularized by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and publicly stated that Communism was the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God. Bishop Ting died on November 22, 2012 at the age of 97.

Gregory XVI. Roman Catholic Pope, 1831-1846. Gregory XVI, born Bartolomeo Alberto Cappellari, joined the Camaldolese Order of monks, and was ordained a priest in 1787. He became vicar general of the Camaldolese Order, and was appointed to various other offices before being created a cardinal in 1825 and succeeding Pius VIII as Pope. Pope Gregory XVI is the most recent Pope to assume the papacy while not yet a bishop. He was a strong traditionalist, opposing democratic and modernizing reforms in the Papal States and throughout Europe, and attempting to strengthen the authority of the papacy. Pope Gregory condemned the slave trade in his apostolic letter In supremo apostolatus (1839). He died after an attack of facial erysipelas on June 1, 1846 at the age of 80, and was succeeded by Leo XII.

John G. Diefenbaker. Prime Minister of Canada, 1957-1963. Mr. Diefenbaker was born in Ontario, but moved with his family to Saskatchewan in 1903 and stayed there for the rest of his life. He practiced law in Wakaw, and later Prince Albert. Mr. Diefenbaker lost his first nine elections (including a federal by-election against Prime Minister Mackenzie King in 1926), but was finally elected to the House of Commons as a Conservative in the federal election of 1940. He ran for the party leadership in 1942 and 1948--losing both times--before finally winning the leadership of the Progressive Conservatives in December 1956. A narrow Progressive Conservative plurality in the election of June 10, 1957 allowed him to become Prime Minister, and he parlayed his oratorical and campaigning skills into the most smashing majority in Canadian history, winning 208 of 265 seats in the House of Commons in the election of March 31, 1958. Unfortunately, Mr. Diefenbaker gradually frittered his majority away; as Bruce Hutchison put it in his book Mr. Prime Minister 1867-1964:

He wanted so much to do his best but could not find the means of putting his abilities to work for more than election purposes, and for them only briefly.

It’s often been said that John Diefenbaker was one of Canada’s greatest politicians but one of her worst Prime Ministers. He wasn’t an economic conservative and increased government spending, but killed the Avro Arrow jet fighter program, which resulted in the permanent loss to the country of many talented people. Perhaps Mr. Diefenbaker’s most notable achievement as Prime Minister was the passage of the Canadian Bill of Rights in 1960. Some take the view that Mr. Diefenbaker made a mistake in giving the country a bill of rights instead of the charter of rights that was eventually forced upon the country by Pierre Trudeau in 1982. Mr. Diefenbaker’s choice, however, was deliberate and well-considered. He believed in parliamentary supremacy and Canada’s common law tradition, inherited from Great Britain. Where Mr. Diefenbaker was mistaken, in his last years, was in his belief, while Mr. Trudeau was trying to force a written constitution upon the country, that the Canadian people couldn’t be fooled into thinking that they would be getting rights they didn’t already have. Unfortunately, Mr. Diefenbaker overestimated the intelligence and wisdom of his countrymen. Mr. Diefenbaker’s majority was reduced to a majority in the election of June 18, 1962, and became a defeat in the election of April 8, 1963. He remained as Leader of the Opposition through another electoral defeat in 1965, and was finally defeated in an attempt to retain his position as party leader in 1967. Mr. Diefenbaker continued to hold office as a member of the House of Commons, winning his last election on May 22, 1979. John Diefenbaker did make one notably correct prediction near the end of his life: as Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s popularity was declining in the late 1970s, Mr. Diefenbaker was fond of saying, "I’m the only living ex-Prime Minister--but I’m looking forward to having company very soon!" Mr. Diefenbaker got his wish: when he died peacefully while sitting in an armchair in the library of his Ottawa residence on August 16, 1979 at the age of 83, he was a member of Parliament with the party in government.

Crime
American newspaper heiress Patty Hearst was arrested by U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents in San Francisco, 19 months after being kidnapped by members of the terrorist orgainzation Symbionese Liberation Army. SLA members Bill and Emily Harris were also arrested. Miss Hearst was charged with participating in a 1974 bank robbery.

Charles Keating, former owner of Lincoln Savings & Loan Association, was indicted on 42 charges of criminal fraud by a California state grand jury in Los Angeles. Three executives of American Continental, Lincoln's parent company, were also indicted. The charges involved an alleged scheme to defraud old people by enticing them to invest in uninsured high-risk bonds. After American Continental filed for bakruptcy, the money could not be recovered. Mr. Keating was put in jail after being unable to pay the $5 million bail.

Olympics
Atlanta was awarded the 1996 Summer Olympic games, ahead of bids from Athens and Toronto. Toronto’s bid cost $14 million, and Paul Henderson, chief promoter of the Toronto bid, blamed his city’s defeat on a reluctant city council and opposition from the Bread Not Circuses Coalition who advocated that money spent on the Olympics would be better spent on social programs.

The Roughriders blocked Hayden Epstein's field goal attempt on the last play of the game to defeat the Eskimos. Mr. Epstein, whose 24-yard field goal with 3:51 remaining in regulation time had drawn the Eskimos to within 1 point, couldn't hear the snap count because of loud noise from the 25,226 fans at Taylor Field in Regina, and his timing was thrown off on the kick. Kenton Keith rushed for 2 Saskatchewan touchdowns, Elijah Thurmon scored another on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Marcus Crandell, and defensive back Omarr Morgan returned an interception 46 yards for the final Saskatchewan touchdown. Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray completed 31 of 45 passes for 346 yards and touchdowns to Ron McClendon, Trevor Gaylor, and Mookie Mitchell. Singor Mobley scored the first Edmonton touchdown on a 53-yard fumble return early in the 2nd quarter. Mr. Epstein kicked 4 converts, 2 field goals, and 2 singles; unfortunately, his blocked field goal attempt on the last play was the last play of his 4-game CFL career. It was the first CFL game for Edmonton running back Dahrran Diedrick.

King Philip IV failed to achieve successful domestic and military reform, and the Spanish Empire had already begun to decline by the time of his death. Effie Ellsler. U.S. actress. Miss Ellsler was a leading actress on stage, and later, screen in a career spanning more than 75 years, beginning at the age of 3. Her stage roles included the title role in Hazel Kirke in the early 1880s and the lead role in her last Broadway play, The Bat (1920-1922). Miss Ellsler appeared in more than 20 movies, including Old Ironsides (1926); The Front Page (1931); and Camille (1936). She died on October 8, 1942, three weeks after her 87th birthday, after a short illness.

Len Koenecke, 31. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Koenecke was in his third season in the major leagues, and was batting .283 in 100 games with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but had been released by the team on September 16 because of his heavy drinking. He boarded an American Airlines plane in St. Louis that was bound for Buffalo, where he had played in the minors. He was carrying a bottle and seemed intoxicated, and created a disturbance shortly after takeoff. He punched a stewardess and another passenger, and was thrown off the plane when it touched down in Detroit. Mr. Koenecke then chartered a small plane to Buffalo with just the pilot and a friend of the pilot as the other people on board. Mr. Koenecke attempted to grab the controls of the plane and then became involved in a wresting and punching match with the other passenger. The pilot, William Mulqueeney, quelled the disturbance by repeatedly hitting Mr. Koenecke over the head with the fire extinguisher until he stopped fighting. Mr. Mulqueeney guided the plane to a landing on a racetrack near Toronto, where Mr. Koenecke was dead on arrival. Mr. Mulqueeney and his friend, Irwin Davis, were charged with manslaughter, but the jury deliberated for just five minutes before returning a verdict of not guilty by reason of self-defense. In 265 major league games from 1933-1935, Mr. Koenecke batted .297 with 22 home runs and 114 runs batted in.

Hal Kelleher pitched a 4-hit shutout in his major league debut as the Philadelphia Phillies edged the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 in the second game of a doubleheader at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. The game's only run came on a home run by Dolph Camilli in the 7th inning against Leroy Herrmann, who allowed just 5 hits in 8 innings in taking the loss in his 45th and last major league game. The Phillies also won the first game 3-2, as Curt Davis won the pitchers' duel over Gene Schott.

The Winnipeg Jets came back from a 2-0 1st-period deficit to defeat the Swedish national team 6-2 before more than 10,000 fans in Stockholm. Ted Green led the Jets with a goal and 2 assists, with other Winnipeg goals coming from Bobby Hull, Norm Beaudin, Perry Miller, and Mike Ford. Roland Erickson and Mats Ulberg scored for Sweden. The game was the fourth for the Jets in a nine-game exhibition tour of Finland, Sweden, and Czechoslovakia, and the win gave them a 2-1-1 record.

The Rough Riders jumped to a 34-1 lead in the 2nd quarter and withstood a 2nd-half comeback attempt to defeat the Eskimos before 29,063 fans at Lansdowne Park. Halfback Jim Foley rushed 3 yards for the game's first touchdown in the 1st quarter, and passed 64 yards to Rhome Nixon in the 2nd quarter. Moody Jackson rushed 37 yards for a touchdown on a reverse, and quarterback Tom Clements passed 1 yard to Tony Gabriel for the other Ottawa TD. George McGowan made a spectacular diving catch of a Tom Wilkinson pass for a 3-yard touchdown on the last play of the 1st half. Roy Bell rushed 5 yards for an Edmonton touchdown in the 3rd quarter, and Bruce Lemmerman connected with John Konihowski for a 16-yard TD early in the 4th quarter. Mr. Wilkinson completed 2-point convert passes to Tyrone Walls after each of the first 2 touchdowns. Art Green of the Rough Riders led all rushers with 139 yards on 25 carries. Edmonton receiver Don Warrington, having the best season of his career, suffered a season-ending knee injury. It was the last CFL game for Edmonton punter Walt McKee, who was playing his sixth game with the Eskimos after three seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

CIAU
The Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union suspended the University of Windsor Lancers football program for using former University of Saskatchewan quarterback Dave Pickett, who was ruled to be ineligible. The Lancers had defeated the University of Western Ontario Mustangs 34-17 four days earlier. The Mustangs, meanwhile, forfeited any chance at being awarded victory in that game when athletics director Bob Barney revealed that they had also used an ineligible player. Defensive tackle Paul Patterson had spent two seasons in the Canadian Football League before returning to university, giving him six years of professional and university competition, one more than the five-year limit allowed under CIAU rules.

The California Angels traded infielder-outfielder Bobby Valentine and a player to be named later to the San Diego Padres for pitcher Gary Ross, who was on the roster of the Hawaii Islanders of the AAA Pacific Coast League. Mr. Valentine was batting .281 with no home runs and 5 runs batted in in 26 games with the Angels in 1975. Mr. Ross posted a record of 16-8 with an earned run average of 2.49 in 27 games with Hawaii in 1975. Infielder Rudy Meoli was sent to the Padres on November 4 to complete the deal.

The Montreal Expos scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning and 3 in the 3rd as they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 before 5,883 fans at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis in the Wednesday Expos Baseball telecast on CBC. Montreal catcher Gary Carter hit a 2-run home run in the 2nd inning and singled in 2 runs in the 3rd.

The New York Yankees scored 2 runs with 2 out in the top of the 9th inning to tie the game and scored 4 runs in the top of the 11th, withstanding a 3-run rally in the bottom of the 11th as they edged the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 before 4,447 fans at County Stadium in Milwaukee.
