. U.K. clergyman. Cardinal Newman was an Anglican priest who apostatized and joined the Roman Catholic Church in 1845. He was made a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879.

Charley Paddock
. U.S. runner. Mr. Paddock won gold medals in the men's 100-metre and 4 X 100-metre relay and a silver medal in the men's 200-metre events at the 1920 Summer Olympic Games in Antwerp. He won the silver medal again in the men's 200-metre run at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, and gold medals in the 100- and 200-metre runs at the World University Games in 1923. Mr. Paddock served on the personal staff of U.S. Marine Corps Major General William Upshur during World War II, and was three weeks short of his 43rd birthday when he and Maj. Gen. Upshur were killed in a plane crash in Alaska on July 21, 1943.

The New York Yankees scored 3 runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the Cleveland Indians 7-4 before 27,000 fans at Dunn Field in Cleveland to reduce the Indians’ lead over the Yankees in the American League to 2½ games. All of the Indians’ runs came in the 3rd inning on a grand slam by Elmer Smith off Carl Mays (18-8), who pitched an 8-hit complete game, while doubling and scoring the winning run. Mr. Smith’s grand slam was his second in 11 days. Jim Bagby (23-7) allowed 12 hits and 6 earned runs in a complete game loss. New York right fielder Babe Ruth twisted his knee while rounding second base in the 1st inning; after a 10-minute interruption while the trainer worked on him, he collapsed at third base into the arms of Cleveland third baseman Larry Gardner, and was carried off the field by two teammates.

The Philadelphia Athletics scored 10 runs in the 7th inning of a 13-4 win over the Detroit Tigers at Navin Field in Detroit. Eddie Rommel (3-1) pitched an 8-hit complete game victory and batted 2 for 5 with 2 runs and a run batted in.

Buck Weaver singled home Ray Schalk and Dickie Kerr with 1 out in the bottom of the 7th inning as the Chicago White Sox scored 2 runs to overcome a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Washington Nationals 2-1 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Mr. Kerr (13-5) pitched a 7-hitter to outduel Eric Erickson (10-11), who allowed just 4 hits in 6+ innings, but walked 6 batters, including Messrs. Schalk and Kerr to open the 7th.

Jesse Haines (11-14) pitched a 14-hit complete game, allowing 8 earned runs, but was still the winning pitcher as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 18-9 at National League Park in Philadelphia. Mr. Haines batted 4 for 5, hitting his first major league home run, adding a double, and scoring 3 runs. St. Louis first baseman Jack Fournier was 5 for 7 with 2 doubles, 4 runs, and an RBI, while third baseman Milt Stock was 4 for 5 with a double, 3 runs, and 5 RBIs. Frank Smykal, 60
. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Smykal was a shortstop who played 6 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1916, batting .300 (3 for 10) with no home runs and 2 runs batted in. He played more than 407 games in at least 7 seasons in the minor leagues (1910-1916).

War
The Netherlands became the sixth United Nations member to send troops to Korea, deciding tentatively to supply one company each of army and marines. The U.S. Air Force announced that 50,000 reservists were being ordered to active duty for the early fall of 1950.

Defense
The Council of Europe's Consultative Assembly in Strasbourg passed a motion by Winston Churchill recommending the immediate formation of a unified European army. Mr. Churchill said, "We are still under the shield of the atomic bomb."

Crime
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested Ethel Greenglass Rosenberg in New York for allegedly conspiring to transmit atomic secrets to the U.S.S.R. Her husband Julius Rosenberg and brother David Greenglass had previously been arrested on similar charges.

Oil
Major oil companies signed an agreement with Iraq providing for a royalty increase of 4-6 shillings per ton for the country's oil, giving Iraq $47 million in additional revenue on foreign concessions for the duration of the agreement.

Joe DiMaggio, in a 4-for-38 slump, was benched for the first time in his major league career. His replacement, Cliff Mapes, hit a game-winning home run in the 7th inning as the New York Yankees edged the Philadelphia Athletics 7-6 before 27,002 fans at Yankee Stadium.

An error by first baseman Don Lenhardt allowed Vic Wertz to score with 2 out in the top of the 10th inning to break a 3-3 tie as the Detroit Tigers defeated the St. Louis Browns 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader before 9,562 fans at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Mr. Lenhardt's error, on a throw from second baseman Snuffy Stirnweiss on an attempted double play, was the Browns' fourth of the game. Dizzy Trout (9-2) pitched a 12-hit complete game to outduel Ned Garver (9-11), who allowed 7 hits and 3 earned runs in a complete game. Don Johnson (4-2) allowed 13 hits but just 1 earned run to win the pitchers' duel over Hank Borowy (0-1), who allowed just 5 hits, as the Browns won the second game 2-1. Mr. Lenhardt atoned for his error in the first game by singling home Bill Sommers from second base with 2 out in the bottom of the 7th to break a 1-1 tie. The Tigers left 10 runners on base in the second game.

Paul Gillespie, 49
. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Gillespie was a catcher with the Chicago Cubs (1942, 1944-1945), batting .283 with 6 home runs and 31 runs batted in in 89 games. He was the first major league player to hit home runs in his first and last major league at bats. Mr. Gillespie helped the Cubs win the National League pennant in 1945, and batted 0 for 6 in 3 games in the World Series. He played more than 480 games in 9 seasons in the minor leagues (1938-1949).

While U.S. forces provided extensive helicopter and bomber support, South Vietnamese ground soldiers were reported to have taken over the primary role of defending the country's borders along Cambodia and Laos.

Crime
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation seized Rev. Daniel Berrigan, a hero of the anti-Vietnam War movement and four months a fugitive from a three-year jail sentence for destroying draft records, on Block Island, Rhode Island. The 49-year-old priest, who had reportedly been harboured by sympathizers, was one of the "Cantonville 9," all Roman Catholic clerics and laity convicted on June 6, 1969 on charges of robbery, assault, and destruction of government property in destroying draft records in Cantonville, Maryland on May 17, 1968. The 9 included his brother, Rev. Philip Berrigan, who had also gone underground with his brother and three otehrs shortly after sentencing. Philip had been captured shortly thereafter.

Society
Mexican President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz sent an amendment to Congress to end the use of Ciudad Juarez, a border city opposite El Paso, Texas, as a place for quick divorces, especially New Yorkers. In 1969 more than 45,000 Juarez divorces were granted.

The Cleveland Indians released utility player Lou Klimchock, ending his 12-year major league career. He was batting .161 with 1 home run and 2 runs batted in in 41 games with Cleveland in 1970, and hit .232 with 13 homers and 69 RBIs in 318 games in the major leagues from 1958-1970.

Felix Millan doubled with 1 out in the bottom of the 5th inning and scored the game's only run on a 2-out single by Hank Aaron as the Atlanta Braves edged the Montreal Expos 1-0 before 7,269 fans at Atlanta Stadium. Jim Nash (12-4) pitched a 3-hitter to outduel Carl Morton (14-8), who allowed 4 hits in 7 innings. Mr. Bunning, who won 118 games with the Detroit Tigers (1955-1963), became the first pitcher since Cy Young to win 100 games in each of the American and National Leagues. The Astros had runners on first and second bases with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th inning, but Joe Hoerner, who had relieved Mr. Bunning with 2 out, was relieved in turn by Dick Selma, who struck out Jesus Alou to end the game.

Ed Brinkman singled with 1 out and nobody on base in the bottom of the 11th inning and Paul Casanova followed with a double to score Mr. Brinkman to give the Washington Senators a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins before 9,372 fans at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington. The Twins opened the scoring on a 2-run home run by Harmon Killebrew with 2 out in the 1st inning, but the Senators tied the game on a 2-run homer by Aurelio Rodriguez with 2 out in the 8th. John Roseboro grounded out as a pinch hitter for Washington in the 7th inning in the 1,585th and last game of his 14-year major league career.

Mel Stottlemyre (11-10) pitched a 7-hitter, hit a solo home run, and added another run, while catcher Jake Gibbs hit a pair of solo homers as the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 7-1 before 13,454 fans at Yankee Stadium. Jim Lyttle also hit a solo homer for the Yankees, and singled home another run.

Jean Papineau-Couture, 83
. Canadian composer and academic. Mr. Papineau-Couture, a native of Montreal, wrote a symphony and numerous instrumental and chamber works in a career spanning 60 years. He taught at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal (1946-1963) and Université de Montréal (1951-1982), serving as Dean of the latter (1968-1973).

Jonathan Burton, 19. U.S. criminal. Mr. Burton, a passenger aboard Southwest Airlines Flight 1763--a Boeing 737 en route from Paradise, Nevada to Salt Lake City--attempted to storm the cockpit in an apparent act of air rage, but was subdued by 6-8 other passengers, and died from asphyxiation.

Crime
Patrick Connors and Francis Coyle were sentenced to prison for typical Irish behaviour--causing a barroom brawl. What made this Irish social event different was that it took place aboard a holiday jet bound from Britain to Jamaica in 1999.

Danny McManus completed touchdown passes of 70 and 49 yards to Archie Amerson and Paul Osbaldiston kicked 5 field goals and 2 converts to lead the Tiger-Cats over the Roughriders before 21,116 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Saskatchewan quarterback Henry Burris completed 27 of 50 passes for 458 yards and touchdowns, to Curtis Marsh and Darryl Hobbs. Mr. Marsh's touchdown came on a recovery in the end zone of a fumble by teammate Demetris Bendross, who had lost the ball at the Hamilton 8-yard line after catching a pass from Mr. Burris for a 46-yard gain. Paul McCallum added 2 converts and 3 field goals for the Roughriders.

The Eskimo defense held the powerful Alouette offense without a touchdown while scoring one of its own before a Commonwealth Stadium crowd of 31,472. Mark Nohra rushed 17 times for 125 yards and a touchdown for the Eskimos, while catching 2 passes for 22 yards. Nealon Greene threw a touchdown pass to Kez McCorvey for the Eskimos, with the last touchdown coming with 1:28 remaining in the game when Singor Mobley intercepted a Stanley Jackson pass and returned it 43 yards. Sean Fleming added 3 converts, 2 field goals, and 2 singles. Terry Baker's 2 field goals and 1 single accounted for the Montreal scoring. Mr. Baker's second field goal, from 22 yards early in the 3rd quarter, came after Mike Pringle had been tackled inside the Eskimos' 10-yard line after a 62-yard rush. Mr. Pringle left the game after amassing 104 yards on 11 carries.
