Politics and government
The Conservative Party, led by Robert Borden, won 131 of 221 seats in the House of Commons in the Canadian federal election, ending 15 years of Liberal Party government under Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The Liberals, who had won 133 of 220 seats in the 1908 election, were reduced to 85 seats, and one Liberal-Conservative was elected. It was a rare Canadian election in that there was a particular issue at the centre of the campaign, mainly reciprocity, or free trade, with the United States. The Liberals favoured reciprocity, which won support in western Canada. Powerful manufacturing interests opposed reciprocity, which hurt the Liberals in eastern Canada, particularly in Toronto and Montreal. The new government took office on October 10, 1911.

Liberal Party candidate Laetare Roy won a Quebec provincial by-election in Lévis, receiving 2,711 votes to 2,133 for Conservative Party candidate Alphonse Bernier. The Liberals had held the riding since 1897.
