U.S. Senator Edmund Muskie (Maine) won the New Hampshire primary for the Democratic party nomination for President of the United States, taking 46.4% of the vote. U.S. Senator George McGovern (South Dakota) finished second with 37% of the vote. In the Republican primary, President Richard Nixon obtained 68% of the vote to 20% for Rep. Paul McCloskey (California), a critic of Mr. Nixon’s Vietnam policy, and 11% for Rep. John Ashbrook (Ohio), a conservative critic of Nixon administration policy.
