Maury Wills of the Los Angeles Dodgers scored 2 runs as the National League defeated the American League 3-1 before 45,480 fans at District of Columbia Stadium in Washington in the first major league All-Star game of 1962. With Bob Shaw of the Milwaukee Braves pitching, there were runners on first and second bases with 2 out, and Luis Aparicio of the Chicago White Sox hit a drive to right-center field that appeared as if it would be an extra-base hit, but Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants caught it to end the game. Don Drysdale of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitched the first 3 innings for the NL; Juan Marichal of the Giants pitched the next 2 innings and was the winning pitcher. Jim Bunning of the Detroit Tigers pitched the first 3 innings for the AL, followed by Camilo Pascual of the Minnesota Twins, who pitched the next 3 innings and took the loss. U.S. President John F. Kennedy threw out the first ball, and Vice President Lyndon Johnson was also in attendance.

Space
A total eclipse of the sun took place which was visible in much of North America. This blogger was living in Yellowknife—where the eclipse was partial—and the sunny sky there got a little darker in the early afternoon. One of the best places to witness the eclipse was Nova Scotia, which was immortalized a few months later in Carly Simon’s hit song You’re So Vain.

Diplomacy
U.K. Secretary of State for Northern Ireland William Whitelaw announced that he had been involved in secret talks with the provisional Irish Republican Army in London, and that the two-week cease-fire in Northern Ireland had come to an end.

Disasters
At least 24 people were killed when elephants crazed by India’s heat and drought destroyed huts in five villages around Chandka Forest.
