Born on this date
Charilaos Trikoupis
. Prime Minister of Greece, 1875, 1878, 1880, 1882-1885, 1886-1890, 1892-1893, 1893-1895. Mr. Trikoupis was first elected to the Hellenic Parliament in 1865. He opposed royal privilege in selecting Prime Ministers, but after he formed the New (or Modernist) Party and won a plurality in Parliament, King George I reluctantly named him Prime Minister. Mr. Trikoupis achieved parliamentary reforms, including the introduction of non-confidence motions into the constitution, but Greece was beset by political instability, and Mr. Trikoupis was frequently in and out of office as Prime Minister. During his 1892-1893 government, he declared the country bankrupt. Mr. Trikoupis declined to run for office in 1895 and moved to Cannes; his party was resoundingly defeated in that year's election. He was involuntarily nominated for a seat in Parliament in 1896 and was elected, but he remained in Cannes, where he died on March 30, 1896 at the age of 63.

Sergiu Celibidache
. Romanian-born orchestra conductor. Mr. Celibidache was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (1945-1952) and Munich Philharmonic Orchestra (1979-1996), and worked with radio orchestras in Stockholm, Stuttgart, and Paris. The Eskimos looked sloppy at times, but still set a team record (that still stands) for points in a road game as they routed the Rough Riders before 21,435 fans at Lansdowne Park. Kevin Cole, playing his first CFL regular season game in place of injured Jim Germany, rushed 10 times for 54 yards—including an 8-yard touchdown—and caught 7 passes for 76, including a 5-yard touchdown reception from starting quarterback Warren Moon. Tom Scott caught 5 passes for 108 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown pass from Mr. Moon. Mike Levenseller, playing his first CFL game, caught just 1 pass, but it was from Mr. Moon for a 6-yard touchdown. Defensive back Emilio Fraietta returned an interception 42 yards for his only CFL touchdown, and Neil Lumsden rushed 7 times for 20 yards and caught 3 passes for 84 yards, including touchdown receptions of 45 yards from Mr. Moon and 32 yards from backup quarterback Cliff Olander, playing his first CFL game. Eskimo defensive end Tom Tuinei, playing his first CFL game, recorded 2½ quarterback sacks and recovered 2 Ottawa fumbles, earning recognition as the CFL’s lineman of the week. Linemate Ron Estay recorded ½ sack for the Eskimos in what turned out to be the last game of an 11-year Hall of Fame career. The Rough Riders’ only points came on a 59-yard bomb from Jordan Case to John Holland, converted by Gerry Organ, with 32 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter. The win was the fifth straight for the Eskimos in a season opener.

Lawrence Phillips rushed 16 times for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns and caught 4 passes for 63 to lead the Alouettes past the Roughriders before a sellout crowd of 20,002 at Molson Stadium. Quarterback Anthony Calvillo rushed 3 yards for the other Montreal touchdown. Saskatchewan quarterback Nealon Greene rushed 10 times for 107 yards and a 19-yard touchdown, and Sedrick Shaw rushed 11 times for 55 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown for the Roughriders. With 1:32 remaining in regulation time, Mr. Greene ran the ball to the Montreal 38-yard line, but fumbled when hit, and the ball was recovered by Montreal’s William Loftus. Television replays showed that Mr. Greene should have been ruled down before the ball came loose, but video review wasn’t in the CFL rule book in those days, and the bad call stood.

Dan Crowley completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Donnie Ashley and a 2-point convert pass to Mark Nohra with 3:49 remaining to provide the winning margin as the Renegades won their first game ever before 22,436 fans at Frank Clair Stadium. Mr. Crowley handed off to Darren Davis for a 2-yard touchdown and passed 1 yard to Denis Montana for another Ottawa touchdown. Winnipeg quarterback Khari Jones completed touchdown passes to Milt Stegall, Arland Bruce, and Charles Roberts. Ottawa punter Glenn Harper conceded a safety touch with 2 seconds remaining in the game, leaving his team 1 point ahead.
