. German composer. Mr. Wagner was known for his operas, such as Tannhauser (1845/1861); Lohengrin (1850); Tristan und Isolde (1865); Das Rheingold (1869); Die Walküre (1870); Götterdämmerung (1876); and Parsifal (1882). Mr. Wagner, who was greatly admired by Adolf Hitler, inspired a cult, which lives on in the annual Bayreuth Festival.

. U.S. political adviser. Mr. Rostow was a special assistant for national security affairs to President Lyndon Johnson from 1966-1969, and helped to shape U.S. foreign policy in southeast Asia in the 1960s.

Kid Gavilan, 77. Cuban boxer. Mr. Gavilan, born Gerardo Gonzalez, was world welterweight champion from 1951-1954. In a professional career that ran from 1943-1958, he compiled a record of 108 wins, 30 losses, and 5 draws, and was never knocked out.
