Max Miller, 68
. U.K. comedian. Mr. Miller, whose real name was Thomas Henry Sargent and was nicknamed "The Cheeky Chappie," was regarded as the greatest standup comedian of his generation, performing in music hall, radio, and films in a career spanning more than 40 years until his death from a heart attack. He was known for his flamboyant suits, his wicked charm, and his risqué jokes which often got him into trouble with the censors.

U.S. Consul General in Mexico Terrance Leonhardy, kidnapped near his home in Guadalajara by guerrillas with the People's Revolutionary Armed Forces on May 4, was released near his home, the day after the Mexican government had acceded to the kidnappers' demands, freeing 30 prisoners and flying them to Cuba.

Crime
Italian authorities charged seven men with illegal excavation and criminal activities in connection with the controversial sale of the Euphronios vase to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1972. The authorities said they had evidence, in the form of fragments from the vase found in 1971 in an Etruscan tomb, which proved almost conclusively that the vase had been dug up in Italy and smuggled out.

Politics and government
Mayors of Canadian cities attended the "Cities for the 70's" conference in Toronto, and agreed to seek additional funds from the federal and provincial governments.
