Rookie outfielders Al Bumbry and Rich Coggins of the Baltimore Orioles each hit their first major league home runs, consecutively off Oakland Athletics' ace Catfish Hunter, but the Athletics won 4-3.

. U.S. politician. Mr. Long, a Democrat, was the son of Louisiana Governor and U.S. Senator Huey Long, and represented Louisiana in the United States Senate from 1948-1987, serving as majority whip from 1965-1969 and chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance from 1966-1981.

Diplomacy
The U.S.A., U.K., and Spain submitted a proposal to the United Nations Security Council to give the U.S.A. and U.K. authority over Iraq's government and finances. The proposal also called on the UN to lift sanctions against Iraq.

Economics and finance
The United States House of Representatives voted 222-203 in favour of a tax cut of $550 billion ovber 10 years proposed by President George W. Bush. The plan provided the greatest relief to wealthier Americans, by reducing taxes on dividends and capital gains.
