José Justo Corro
. President of Mexico, 1836-1837. Mr. Corro was a lawyer who was a dedicated follower of General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Mr. Corro served in the cabinet of President Miguel Barragán as Minister of Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs (1835-1836), and was named President by the Chamber of Deputies when Mr. Barragán resigned on February 27, 1836. President Corro was in office until April 19, 1837, during which Gen. Santa Anna was taken prisoner in Texas; Mexican troops retreated from Texas in order to save Gen. Santa Anna's life; Pope Gregory XVI recognized Mexico's indepencence; diplomatic relations with the United States were suspended; and Mexico's currency was debased, resulting in riots. Mr. Corro turned the government over to General Anastasio Bustamante, and retired to private life. He died on or near December 18, 1864 at the approximate age of 70.

New Brunswick's first lazaretto opened on Sheldrake Island in Miramichi Bay. With little support, the leper colony was a failure, and discontent became widespread. The facility was closed in 1849, and residents were moved to new accommodations at Tracadie.

Khawaja Nazimuddin
. Governor General of Pakistan, 1948-1951; Prime Minister of Pakistan, 1951-1953. Sir Khawaja was a member of the Muslim League who served as Prime Minister of Bengal (1943-1945) and Chief Minister of East Pakistan (1945-1948) before serving as Pakistan's first Bengali leader. He became Governor General upon the death of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and became Prime Minister following the assassination of Liaquat Ali Khan. Sir Khawaja struggled to maintain law and order in Pakistan, and Governor General Sir Malik Ghulam forced him to resign in favour of diplomat Mohammad Ali Bogra. Sir Khawaja died after a brief illness on October 22, 1964 at the age of 70.

Percy Spencer. U.S. physicist. Mr. Spencer was largely self-taught in various subjects, and worked with the U.S. defense contract firm Raytheon during World War II. In 1945, he invented the microwave oven. Mr. Spencer died on September 8, 1970 at the age of 76.

Cleveland Naps’ shortstop Neal Ball executed the 20th century's first unassisted triple play in the top of the 2nd inning in the first game of a doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox at League Park in Cleveland. With Heinie Wagner on second base and Jake Stahl on first base‚ Amby McConnell hit a line drive to Mr. Ball‚ who stepped on second base and tagged Mr. Stahl coming down from first. In the bottom of the 2nd‚ Mr. Ball hit his first American League home run‚ an inside-the-park shot‚ and added a double. Cleveland won 6-1 as Cy Young pitched an 8-hitter to improve his 1909 record to 14-7. Boston starting pitcher Charlie Chech allowed 6 hits and 4 runs in 3 innings to take the loss, dropping to 7-5, and batting 0 for 1 in the 94th and last game of his 4-year major league career. He was relieved by Ray Collins, who allowed 4 hits and 2 runs in 5 innings, while batting 1 for 2 and starting a double play in his first major league game. The Red Sox won the second game 8-2.

Ty Cobb batted 2 for 3 with his 4th home run of the season, 2 runs batted in, and a stolen base, but his Detroit Tigers lost 5-3 to the New York Highlanders at Bennett Park in Detroit. Pete Wilson pitched a 9-hit complete game to win the pitching matchup over Bill Lelivelt, who allowed 11 hits and 5 runs, with 2 bases on balls and 3 strikeouts in pitching a complete game in his major league debut.

Soviet forces advanced to within 8 1/2 miles of Lvov, Poland.

Politics and government
The British government announced the appointment of Field Marshal Viscount Gort as commander-in-chief for Palestine and high commissioner for Transjordan.

In his keynote address on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention at Chicago Stadium, Oklahoma Governor Robert Kerr asked for continued support of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. U.S. Senator Harry Truman was named chairman of the Missouri delegation.

Labour
The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington upheld the National War Labor Board's contention that its directives were not subject to court review.

The New York Court of Appeals ruled that the Railway Mail Association was a labour union and could not bar Negroes from membership.

. U.S. labour leader. Mr. Bittner was vice president of the United Mine Workers of America.

Frank Murphy, 59. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1940-1949. Mr. Murphy, a Democrat, was Mayor of Detroit (1930-1933); Governor General of the Philippines (1933-1935); U.S. High Commissioner to the Philippines (1935-1936); Governor of Michigan (1937-1939); and U.S. Attorney General (1939-1940) before being appointed to the Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was known for supporting civil liberties, especially those of unpopular minorities. Mr. Murphy died of a heart attack in his sleep.

Space
The Mount Palomar Observatory in California announced the discovery of a minor planet within Mercury's orbit, 22 million miles from the Sun.

The Dutch Chamber of Deputies voted for ratification of the North Atlantic Treaty.

The New York Giants used a 20-hit attack to score in every inning as they beat the Cincinnati Reds 13-3 before 17,379 fans at the Polo Grounds in New York. Whitey Lockman and Willard Marshall each had 4 hits for the Giants. In the next day's 5-1 win against the Reds‚ the Giants scored in each of the first 3 innings; combined with the July 18 effort of scoring in the last 3 frames against the St.Louis Cardinals‚ the Giants matched the 1894 Pittsburgh Pirates (July 31-August 2) and topped the 20th century mark of 12 set by the 1922 Giants.

Disasters
Two supertankers--the Greek-registered Atlantic Empress and the Liberian-registered Aegean Captain--collided 18 miles off the coast of Tobago and burst into flames, spilling huge amounts of oil into the Atlantic Ocean. Atlantic Empress had flames raging over 2/3 of her hull and was allowed to burn in order to help contain the huge spill. Aegean Captain, less severely damaged, continued on its own power to an anchorage 10 miles off the coast of Trinidad. The two ships counted 27 of 70 crew members missing and presumed dead.

Baseball
Third baseman Ray Knight drove in 6 runs to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 16-4 rout of the St. Louis Cardinals before 27,228 fans at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis.

Dave Roberts and Bruce Kison were the respective winning pitchers as the Pittsburgh Pirates swept a doubleheader from the Houston Astros 9-5 and 4-2 before 33,464 fans at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.

John Curtis pitched a 7-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Dickie Noles as the San Francisco Giants edged the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 before 20,732 fans at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Joe Strain led off the bottom of the 4th inning with a single and eventually scored the game's only run on a double by Darrell Evans.

Dan Ford singled home Rick Miller with none out in the top of the 11th inning to break a 3-3 tie as the California Angels defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader before 33,603 fans at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Mike Flanagan pitched a 6-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Dave Frost as the Orioles won the second game 3-0.

Sixto Lezcano hit a home run with 1 out in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 3-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays before 21,152 fans at County Stadium in Milwaukee.

The Cleveland Indians scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning and held on to defeat the Kansas City Royals 2-1 before 24,046 fans at Royals Stadium. The Royals scored a run in the 9th and had the bases loaded with none out, but relief pitcher Sid Monge entered the game and retired John Wathan on a popup to second base, George Scott on a line drive to shortstop, and U.L. Washington on a strikeout. Rick Wise allowed 6 hits in 8+ innings to win the pitchers' duel over Dennis Leonard, who pitched a 5-hit complete game.

Ralph Garr hit home runs in both games to help the Chicago White Sox sweep a doubleheader from the Texas Rangers 9-6 and 5-4 before 26,687 fans at Arlington Stadium.

. Polish politician. Mr. Sabbat was Prime Minister of the Polish government-in-exile in 1976 and President of the government-in-exile from 1986 until his death.

General Wojciech Jaruzelski was elected President of Poland by the country’s new parliament. The vote was 270-233, with 34 abstentions.

The Siberian mine strikes were settled after workers won promises from the government for better pay, better living and working conditions, and "full economic and legal independence."

Economics and finance
The United States Labor Department reported an increase in consumer prices in June of 0.2%, the smallest increase in 16 months.

Disasters
United Airlines Flight 232, a DC-10 jetliner en route from Denver to Chicago, crashed during an arranged emergency landing at Sioux City, Iowa municipal airport. 112 were killed, while 184 survived. While the plane was at 37,000 feet, an engine in the tail exploded and heavily damaged the plane’s hydraulic system. For the next 41 minutes the pilot, Al Haynes, struggled to control the craft as he brought it into Sioux City for the emergency landing. Just before touchdown, the right wingtip touched the ground; the plane flipped over and crashed in a fireball. Because the plane broke up--the forward coach section landed in a cornfield--many passengers had easy means of fleeing the wreckage. A 700-person rescue team was prepared for the landing. The cause of the engine explosion was not immediately determined.

This was the final game for Ottawa receiver Eugene Goodlow, who had led the CFL in receptions and yards receiving with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1981 and had played with the New Orleans Saints of the NFL from 1983-1987 before attempting a comeback in the CFL in 1989.



Baseball
Joe Carter hit 3 home runs in a game for the second time this season to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 10-1 win over the Minnesota Twins before 22,504 fans at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. It was Mr. Carter’s fourth career 3-home run game‚ tying Lou Gehrig's American League record‚ and also gave him a major league record-tying 5 homers in 2 games. Mr. Carter drove 6 runs in the game, while teammate Albert Belle hit his first major league home run.

Frank McCourt, 78
. U.S. teacher and author. Mr. McCourt was born in Brooklyn, New York, but spent most of his youth in Ireland. He returned to the United States at the age of 19, and became a schoolteacher in New York City. Mr. McCourt was best known for his book Angela's Ashes (1996), which won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. Mr. McCourt died after a long battle with cancer, a month before his 79th birthday.

Henry Surtees, 18. U.K. auto racing driver. Mr. Surtees, the son of legendary driver John Surtees, began competitive driving in 2006. He was killed in a Formula 2 race at Brands Hatch, West Kingsdown, Kent, England when he was hit in the head by a wheel that had come loose from driver Jack Clarke's car after Mr. Clarke had spun into a wall. Mr. Surtees suffered severe head trauma, and his car crashed into a barrier.
