John Harvard, 30. English-born U.S. clergyman. Mr. Harvard was a dissenting minister in England who emigrated in 1837 with his wife to Charlestown, Massachusetts, where he became a teaching elder and assistant preacher at the First Church. He died of tuberculosis and left his library and estate to a local college, which was renamed Harvard College in his honour.

In the first Canadian Football League regular season game played outside Canada, Bernie Faloney connected with Tommy Grant for a 69-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter to give the Tiger-Cats their victory over the Rough Riders before 15,110 fans at Municipal Stadium in a game that was played in Philadelphia as a charity fund-raiser. Gerry McDougall and Ron Howell scored the other Hamilton touchdowns, with Norb Hecker kicking 2 converts and Cam Fraser, who set a league record for a single game with 785 yards punting, adding 4 singles. Tom Dimitroff and Milt Graham scored Ottawa touchdowns, and Mack Yoho kicked 2 field goals.

Died on this date
Hans Lobert, 86. U.S. baseball player, coach, and manager. Mr. Lobert was a shortstop and third baseman with the Pittsburgh Pirate (1903); Chicago Cubs (1905); Cincinnati Reds (1906-1910); Philadelphia Phillies (1910-1914); and New York Giants (1915-1917), batting .274 with 32 home runs, 482 runs batted in, and 316 stolen bases in 1,317 games. He was considered one of the fastest players of his time, winning a 100-yard dash against teammate Jim Thorpe in 1913, and once racing a horse around the basepaths (and winning). Mr. Lobert coached with the Giants in 1928 and with the Phillies from 1934-1941, managing them for the last 2 games of the 1938 season and all of 1942, compiling a record of 42-111 and leading the 1942 Phillies to the worst record of any major league team of the 1940s. He coached with the Reds in 1943-1944.

Dave Benbow converted 4 of the 5 Golden Bear TDs. Alec Lockington kicked a 37-yard field goal for McMaster.

Willie Horton singled home Mickey Stanley with 1 out to climax a 2-run 9th-inning rally to give the Detroit Tigers a 5-4 win over the Athletics before 33,688 fans at Tiger Stadium, making Denny McLain the first major league pitcher since 1934 and the first in the American League since 1931 to win 30 games in a season. Mr. McLain gave up only 6 hits, but 2 of them were home runs by Reggie Jackson. Al Kaline pinch hit for Mr. McLain to lead off the bottom of the 9th, and drew a base on balls to begin the winning rally.
Al Downing pitched a 6-hitter, and singled and scored a run, as the New York Yankees beat the Washington Senators 4-1 before 4,143 fans at District of Columbia Stadium. Roy White helped the New York cause with a 2-run home run in the 4th inning. It was the only major league game for Washington starting and losing pitcher Gerry Schoen, who allowed 6 hits and 3 runs--all earned--in 3 2/3 innings, with 1 base on balls and 1 strikeout, and was 0 for 1 at bat.
A throwing error by second baseman Sandy Alomar in an attempt to complete a double play allowed Aurelio Rodriguez to score the winning run with 2 out in the top of the 10th inning as the California Angels edged the Chicago White Sox 5-4 before 6,474 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The White Sox had runners on first and third bases with 1 out in the bottom of the 10th, but Luis Aparicio flied out to center field and pinch hitter Walt Williams grounded out to second base to end the game.
Larry Jackson pitched a 4-hitter and Bill White drove in 2 runs to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-1 win over the Chicago Cubs before 2,251 fans at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. Mr. Jackson's win was his 13th of the season and the 194th and last of his 13-year major league career.
The San Francisco Giants scored 3 runs in each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings as they beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-1 before 7,187 fans at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Willie Mays led the Giant attack with 2 home runs, a single, 2 runs, and 4 runs batted in, while Bobby Bonds added a 3-run homer. Bobby Bolin pitched a 5-hit complete game victory.
Don Sutton pitched a 6-hitter and Tom Haller drove in 2 runs with a pair of doubles as the Los Angeles Dodgers shut out the Atlanta Braves 3-0 before 9,148 fans at Dodger Stadium. Losing pitcher Milt Pappas was ejected in the 3rd inning by first base umpire Frank Secory when he argued that Mr. Haller's second double--which scored Willie Davis to make the score 3-0--was foul.
Bob Veale pitched an 8-hitter, with 10 strikeouts, and Roberto Clemente drove in 3 runs with a pair of home runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates shut out the New York Mets 6-0 before 15,676 fans at Shea Stadium in New York.
Nelson Briles pitched an 8-hitter and his teammates hit 2 doubles and 3 triples as the St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Houston Astros 8-0 before 16,324 fans at the Astrodome.

Died on this date
Yang Shangkun, 91. 4th President of China, 1988-1993. Mr. Yang joined the Chinese Communist Party in the mid-1920s, and held various positions after the Communists came to power in 1949. He was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party from 1956-1966, but was purged just before the Cultural Revolution, and was imprisoned until being recalled after Deng Xiaoping came to power in 1978. Mr. Yang was forced to retire as President as a result of his opposition to the political rise of Jiang Zemin.
