The Orioles overcame a 2-0 deficit with a run in the 6th inning and 2 in the 7th before 65,792 fans at Veterans Stadium. Solo home runs by Gary Matthews in the 2nd inning and Joe Morgan in the 3rd off Baltimore starting pitcher Mike Flanagan gave the Phillies the lead. The Orioles got on the scoreboard with a solo home run by Dan Ford. They scored 2 runs inthe 7th when Rick Dempsey doubled with 2 out, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by pinch hitter Benny Ayala, who advanced to second on a single by John Shelby. Mr. Ford then hit a ground ball to Philadelphia shortstop Ivan De Jesus, who made an error that allowed Mr. Ayala to score. Mr. Flanagan was relieved by veteran Jim Palmer, who pitched the 5th and 6th innings and was credited with the win. Sammy Stewart then followed with 2 scoreless innings, and Tippy Martinez retired the Phillies in order in the 9th to get the save. For Mr. Palmer, the win was his last in the major leagues. He had won a game in each of the World Series of 1966 and 1970, thus becoming the first pitcher to record a win in World Series competition in three decades. Mr. Carlton gave up just 5 hits and recorded 7 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings, but he became the losing pitcher as a result of the unearned run. Philadelphia manager Paul Owens decided not to put veteran first baseman Pete Rose, who had batted 1 for 8 in the first 2 games, in the starting lineup, marking the first time in Mr. Rose's career that he had not started a post-season game. He came to bat as a pinch hitter to lead off the 9th inning and struck out against Mr. Martinez.

Vic Raschi, 69. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Raschi pitched with the New York Yankees (1946-1953), St. Louis Cardinals (1954-1955), and Kansas City Athletics (1955), compiling a record of 132-66. He was one of the mainstays of the Yankees' pitching staff as they won five straight World Series from 1949-1953, winning 21 games in each season from 1949-1951. Mr. Raschi led the American League in winning percentage in 1950 (21-8, .724) games started in 1949 (37) and 1951 (34), and strikeouts in 1951 (164). He was 5-3 in World Series competition, with 2 of his wins occurring in 1952.

Frankie Yankovic, 83. U.S. musician. Mr. Yankovic was an accordionist and leader of the band Frankie Yankovic and his Yanks. He became known as America's "Polka King," winning the title in a battle of the bands in 1948. Mr. Yankovic released over 200 recordings in a career spanning 50 years.

Cleveland Amory, 81. U.K. author. Mr. Amory was known for books such as The Proper Bostonians (1947) and The Cat Who Came for Christmas (1987), but was better known as a prominent advocate of animal welfare.
