Joe Tinker's 2-run home run broke a 0-0 tie as the Cubs erupted for 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning and defeated the Tigers before 17,760 fans at West Side Park in a game that was played in 1 hour 30 minutes. Orval Overall pitched a 4-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Wild Bill Donovan.

Wallace Algie
. Canadian military officer. Lieutenant Algie, of the 20th Battalion, 1st Central Ontario Regiment, was killed in a battle north east of Cambrai, France after taking two machine gun nests and capturing a German officer and 10 men. He was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously on January 21, 1919.

Health
New Brunswick Health Minister Dr. William Roberts outlawed the gathering of more than five people, and closed schools and churches for five weeks to combat the spread of influenza.

Disasters
The 7.1 Mw San Fermín earthquake shook Puerto Rico with a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent), killing between 76-116 people. A tsunami contributed to the damage and loss of life.

Aviation
The German dirigible Graf Zeppelin, commanded by Hugo Eckener, with 40 crew members and 20 passengers, left Friederichshaven, Germany at 8 A.M. local time and flew south to avoid strong winds, passing over Tarragona, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, at 9:15 P.M. German time.

Politics and government
Dr. Isidro Ayora, provisional President of Ecuador since 1926, received the support by vote of the new Constitutional Assembly, which was elected on August 30, to continue in office for an indefinite period. He received all votes cast, although two members abstained from voting. The Assembly decided to keep in force the Constitution adopted in 1906 until the expiration of the dictatorship upon the election by popular vote of a regular President.

Protest
A student revolt in Caracas against the Venezuelan government resulted in the killing of a student and one other person. 60 people were arrested and put to work on the streets, breaking stone.

Crime
Patrolman George Denker of the Holland Tunnel police was convicted in General Sessions in New York of felonious assault after a trial on a charge that he had blackjacked James Bernard, a janitor from Newark, in the tunnel on the morning of August 12. Patrolman Thomas Finnen of the same force, who was jointly tried with Patrolman Denker, was acquitted. On October 23, Mr. Denker was sentenced to not more than 3 years in prison.

Ira Thomas, 77
. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Thomas was a catcher with the New York Highlanders (1906-1907); Detroit Tigers (1908); and Philadelphia Athletics (1909-1915), batting .242 with 3 home runs and 155 runs batted in in 484 regular season games and .214 with no home runs and 3 runs batted in in 10 World Series games. He played on five teams that won American League pennants, and was with the Athletics when they won World Series in 1910, 1911, and 1913. In 1908, Mr. Thomas singled for the first pinch hit in World Series play. He was a scout with the Athletics for many years after his playing career ended.

Ernest Bertrand, 69. Canadian politician. Mr. Bertrand, a Liberal, represented the Quebec riding of Laurier in the House of Commons from 1935-1949. He served as Minister of Fisheries (1942-1945) and Postmaster General (1945-1949) in the cabinets of Prime Ministers Mackenzie King and Louis St. Laurent. Mr. Bertrand left politics shortly after winning his last election in order to accept an appointment as a Puisne Judge of the Court of King's Bench of Quebec.

Johannes R. Becher, 67. German writer and politician. Mr. Becher was a novelist and poet who joined the Communist Party of Germany before World War II, escaped to Paris shortly after the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, and emigrated to the U.S.S.R. in 1935. He settled in East Berlin after World War II, and was a member of the Volkskammer.

Space
The United States launched the lunar probe Pioneer 1, but it prematurely shut down and burned up in the atmosphere 43 hours later. It was the first such launch to take place since the National Aeronautics and Space Administration had been established.

In a new guideline interpreting the "equal time clause," the U.S. Federal Communications Commission said that radio and television stations that gave air time to a political candidate must give equal time to any legally qualified rival candidate.

It was the first American three-man mission; the first manned Apollo mission; and the first manned Apollo mission since the deaths of the crew of Apollo 1 in a fire on the launch pad during a systems test on January 27, 1967.

Bonita Granville, 65
. U.S. actress. Miss Granville was nominated for an Academy Award for her supporting performance in These Three (1936); her other movies included Now, Voyager (1942); Hitler's Children (1943); and four films in which she played Nancy Drew. She died of lung cancer.

Politics and government
Pope John Paul II addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, but was interrupted by Rev. Ian Paisley, MEP from Northern Ireland, who shouted, "I renounce you as Christ's enemy and antichrist, with all your false doctrine..." Mr. Paisley was physically attacked and ejected from the House, despite the fact that according to the rules of the Parliament, he had every right to protest as he did and Lord Plumb, President of the European Parliament, had no right to silence him.

Richard Denning, 84
. U.S. actor. Mr. Denning, born Louis Albert Heindrich Denninger, Jr., co-starred with Lucille Ball in the radio comedy series My Favorite Husband (1948-1951), and appeared in science fiction and horror films in the 1950s, including Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). He appeared in various television programs before moving to Hawaii, and came out of retirement to play the governor in the television series Hawaii Five-O (1968-1980). Mr. Denning died of a heart attack while visiting relatives in southern California.

Religion
Pope John Paul II canonized the first Jewish-born Roman Catholic saint of the modern era: Edith Stein, a nun killed at Auschwitz during World War II.
