Ottawa linebacker Jerry Campbell made 2 interceptions, both of which led to touchdowns, as the Rough Riders clinched first place in the Eastern Football Conference before 27,115 fans at Lansdowne Park. Russ Jackson threw touchdown passes to Margene Adkins and Whit Tucker for the Ottawa touchdowns. Don Sutherin converted both and added 2 field goals. Former Montreal Alouette Andy Walton played his first game as a Rough Rider running back in place of the injured Vic Washington. He played well, carrying 10 times for 53 yards, but he also left with an injury that put him out for the rest of the season. Bill Symons scored the lone Argonaut touchdown.

Calgary had just had its first snow of the season, and only 17,032 fans showed up at McMahon Stadium on a frigid Saturday night to watch a game that meant nothing in the standings for the Stampeders. The Eskimos needed the win to keep their playoff hopes alive, and Eskimo president Jack Baker visited the team’s dressing room before the game and told the players that they had to win the game to save the franchise. They did, thanks to their defense, which was the best in the league. Neither team was able to score a touchdown, but Edmonton’s offense was able to generate enough yardage along the ground with Jim Thomas and Thermus Butler to provide Dave Cutler with a few field goal opportunities. Mr. Cutler was successful on 3 field goals, and picked up single points on 2 unsuccessful attempts. Former Eskimo Bill Redell quarterbacked the Stampeders, but was unable to generate much of an attack. 21-year-old Cathy Savage was introduced as Miss Calgary Stampeder for 1969.

Jamie Horne and Graham Kinley scored the other Manitoba touchdowns, all of which were converted by Walt McKee. The Huskies broke the shutout with just 2:42 remaining in the game when quarterback Larry Haylor completed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Gord Garvie, who then converted.

Theatre
Eleusinian Rites, Mysteries, and Drama Soirees provided the entertainment for the Engineers’ Wives Society’s annual dinner at the Royal Glenora Club in Edmonton. Reviews were unanimously positive (although it must be admitted that the audience had been drinking) for material that included the legendary "Deranged Dermatologist" skit, which, for some unknown and baffling reason, failed to make the artists famous.

Terrorism
U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz said that the United States should adopt a policy of responding militarily to future acts of terrorism. He warned that such responses could involve the deaths of American servicemen and innocent civilians.

The U.S. administration of President Ronald Reagan reported that the federal budget deficit for the 1984 fiscal year was $175.3 billion, $20.1 billion less than the record deficit of the previous year.

Crime
Italian authorities said that three Bulgarians and four Turks would be tried for the 1981 assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II. It was reported that Judge Ilario Martella would also order Mehmet Ali Agca, who had fired at the pope, to stand trial on new charges. Mr. Agca would also be the principal prosecution witness, and his credibility was expected to be challenged by the defense in view of frequent contradictions in his story of what happened. Only three of the accused men were actually in Italian custody. Italian state prosecutor Antonio Albano had stated in June that he doubted that Bulgarians would have become involved in an assassination plot without the approval of the Soviet Union.

Payne Stewart, 42
. U.S. golfer. Mr. Stewart won 24 tournaments--11 on the PGA tour--in a professional career that began in 1979. He won three major tournaments: the PGA Championship in 1989, and the U.S. Open in 1991 and 1999. He was en route from Orlando, Florida to Dallas along with his agents, Van Ardan and Robert Fraley, and golf course architect Bruce Borland, when the Learjet 35 they were aboard suffered a sudden loss of cabin pressure less than 14 minutes after takeoff, and the four passengers and two crew members--captain Michael Kling, 42, and first officer Stephanie Bellegarrigue, 27--died from an apparent lack of oxygen. United States Air Force jets shadowed the plane before it ran out of fuel and crashed near Mina, South Dakota. Mr. Stewart, who was known for wearing old-fashioned caps and knickers on the course, had won his second U.S. Open title four months earlier with the longest winning putt in the tournament’s history, and was scheduled to play in the Tour Championship in Houston after his stop in Dallas. In the providence of God, Mr. Stewart had come to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour a short time before, so we know that Mr. Stewart is now in His presence. Mr. Stewart was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001.

Bruce Borland, 40. U.S. golf course architect. Mr. Borland designed many of the Jack Nicklaus "Signature" courses in the United States and elsewhere. He was 10 days short of his 41st birthday when he died of hypoxia in the Learjet 35 with Payne Stewart and others.

Politics and government
Newspaper columnist Pat Buchanan, who had been running for the Republican Party presidential nomination for the fourth time, resigned from the party and announced that he would seek the Reform Party nomination. Mr. Buchanan denounced aid to "deadbeat dictators," "the appeasement of Beijing," and any future U.S. involvement in "territorial, tribal, and ethnic wars."
