Born on this date
Alfred Dreyfus. French military officer. Lieutenant Colonel Dreyfus was still a captain when he was tried for treason in 1894 and sentenced to life in prison on Devil's Island in French Guiana. It was widely believed that Captain Dreyfus had been convicted because he was Jewish; a campaign led by writer Emile Zola led to a pardon for Captain Dreyfus, and ultimately, exoneration in 1906 and reinstatement into the army. Capt. Dreyfus died on July 12, 1935 at the age of 75.

Born on this date
Max von Laue. German physicist. Dr. Laue was awarded the 1914 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his discovery of the diffraction of X-rays by crystals", an important step in the development of X-ray spectroscopy." He was interned in England by Allied authorities for several months at the end of 1945, but was returned to Germany early in 1946, and continued his career until his death on April 24, 1960 at the age of 80, 16 days after being injured in a car accident.

Donald Coggan. U.K. clergyman. Most Rev. Coggan was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1974-1980. He was ostensibly an "evangelical," but denied Biblical infallibility, supported homosexual clergy and the ordination of women, and promoted full intercommunion with the Roman Catholic Church and positive relations with Eastern Orthodoxy and the World Council of Churches. Most Rev. Coggan died on May 17, 2000 at the age of 90.

The Tigers overcame an early 2-0 deficit with 2 runs in the 2nd inning and 3 more in the 3rd as they defeated the Pirates 7-2 before 30,915 fans at Forbes Field. Ty Cobb stole home plate for the Tigers in the 3rd inning to cap the rally. Wild Bill Donovan went the distance for the victory.

Cincinnati Reds 10 @ Chicago White Sox 5 (Cincinnati won best-of-nine series 5-3)

The Reds erupted for 4 runs in the 1st inning off Lefty Williams on their way to victory over the White Sox at Comiskey Park. Mr. Williams lasted just 1/3 inning, and his suspicious performance was more evidence that certain members of the White Sox had thrown the series. The only home run of the series came in the bottom of the third, when Joe Jackson of the White Sox connected off Hod Eller, reducing the Reds’ lead to 5-1. With the Reds leading 10-1 in the 8th inning, the White Sox rallied for 4 runs to give the 32,930 fans in attendance some hope, but the rally was squelched, and the White Sox went quietly in the 9th. After the game, Chicago manager Kid Gleason loudly complained about his team’s play. Hod Eller gave up 10 hits in picking up his second win of the series.

In one of the nastiest games in World Series history, the St. Louis Cardinals scored 7 runs in the 3rd inning and cruised to an 11-0 win over the Detroit Tigers at Navin Field in Detroit to win the World Series 4 games to 3. In the 6th inning, Joe Medwick of the Cardinals slid hard into Tigers’ third baseman Marv Owen, and the two almost came to blows. Mr. Medwick was unable to take his position in left field in the bottom of the inning because he was being pelted with fruit, bottles, and debris by Detroit fans. Commissioner K.M. Landis, who was at the game, suggested that Mr. Medwick be removed from the game for his own protection, and he was. Dizzy Dean pitched a 6-hitter for his second win of the series.

While the St. Louis Cardinals were winning the World Series, their Columbus farm team of the American Association defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs of the International League to win the Junior World Series.

The Austrian general election resulted in the Österreichische Volkspartei (Austrian People's Party) (ÖVP) losing its majority in the National Council, but still winning more seats than any other party, with Leopold Figl remaining as Chancellor. The ÖVP won 77 of 165 seats, followed by the Sozialistische Partei Österreichs (Socialist Party of Austria), led by Adolf Schärf (67); Wahlpartei der Unabhängigen (Electoral Party of Independents), led by Herbert Kraus (16); and Kommunistische Partei Österreichs und Linkssozialisten (Communist Party of Austria and Left Socialists), led by Johann Koplenig (5). The Wahlpartei der Unabhängigen was a new party, and targeted the 500,000 registered Nazis who had not been allowed to vote in the most recent election in 1945.

Economics and finance
A trade conference of 33 nations meeting in Annecy, France concluded a series of tariff reduction agreements covering about 80% of the world's trade.

Don Hoak, 41. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Hoak was a third baseman with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1954-1955); Chicago Cubs (1956); Cincinnati Redlegs (1957-1958); Pittsburgh Pirates (1959-1962); and Philadelphia Phillies (1963-1964), batting .265 with 89 home runs and 498 runs batted in in 1,263 games. He played on World Series championship teams in 1955 and 1960, batting .231 with no home runs and 3 RBIs in 10 World Series games. He worked as a broadcaster of Pirates' games (1965-1966); coached with the Phillies (1967); and managed in the Pirates' minor league system (1968-1969), leading the Columbus Jets of the AAA International League to a 74-66 record in 1969. When Larry Shepard was fired as manager of the Pirates with a week remaining in the 1969 regular season, Mr. Hoak was widely expected to be named as his successor; instead, Danny Murtaugh, who had retired as manager for health reasons after the 1967 season, resumed the position. Mr. Hoak's wife, singer Jill Corey, told her husband the news; Mr. Hoak then witnessed someone stealing his brother-in-law's car from the driveway of the Hoak home. Mr. Hoak got in his car and gave chase, but suffered a heart attack at the wheel, and sat unattended until a doctor reached him. Mr. Hoak died 10 minutes after arriving at the hospital.

The 24 hours ending at 8 A.M. marked a day passed with no American combat deaths reported in Vietnam, with Americans involved in only one ground action and two overnight shellings in that period. The lowest weekly casualty list in three years was issued for the previous week, with 64 Americans killed. The lull was attributed to monsoon rains and preparation for a heavy winter offensive.

U.S. President Richard Nixon’s nomination of Clement Haynsworth for the U.S. Supreme Court was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee by a vote of 10-7.

Baseball
Sparky Anderson, a coach with the San Diego Padres in 1969, was hired as manager of the Cincinnati Reds. He’d never managed in the major leagues before; his highest previous level was AAA, when he led the Toronto Maple Leafs of the International League to a fifth-place finish in 1964.

Danny Murtaugh, who had managed the Pittsburgh Pirates twice before, was hired to lead them again. He’d managed the Pirates from 1957-1964--winning the World Series in 1960--and for the last half of 1967.

John McNamara resigned after two years as manager of the California Angels; he compiled a record of 151-173. In 1984 the Angels were 81-81, in second place in the American League West Division, 3 games behind the Kansas City Royals.

Six different players scored touchdowns as the Argos took advantage of 6 turnovers to beat the Rough Riders in front of 31,116 fans at SkyDome. The Argos scored 3 touchdowns in each of the 2nd and 4th quarters. Ottawa coach Steve Goldman took the day off to observe Yom Kippur and handed the coaching duties to assistant Mike Roach. Ottawa receiver Steve Howlett went in to play quarterback briefly in the 4th quarter, but without success. The game marked the return of star linebacker Willie Pless to the Toronto lineup after an unsuccessful NFL tryout.



The Blue Bombers struck first at Commonwealth Stadium on a 15-yard pass from Sean Salisbury to Ricky Blake, but after that it was all downhill. Edmonton quarterback Tracy Ham completed 18 of 31 passes for 341 yards and touchdowns to Tony Hunter and Tom Richards, and carried 8 times for 47 yards and a touchdown. Chris Johnstone scored twice on short runs, while Jerry Kauric converted all the touchdowns and added 3 field goals and a single. Tony "The Wiz" Hunter returned punts for over 100 yards (including a 63-yard return in the fourth quarter) to set a team record for punt return yards in a season with 1,027--with 4 games remaining to add to the total. Mr. Blake was the lone bright spot for the Blue Bombers, rushing 17 times for 107 yards and catching 3 passes for 21. Only 28,869 showed up on a cloudy Thanksgiving Day to witness the slaughter.

Will Clark drove in 2 runs with a bases-loaded single with 2 out in the 8th inning to enable the Giants to defeat the Cubs before 62,084 fans at Candlestick Park. Former Cub Rick Reuschel pitched 8 innings for the victory, and Steve Bedrosian earned his third straight save. It was the first NL pennant for the Giants since 1962.

Milt Jackson, 76. U.S. musician. Mr. Jackson played several instruments, but was primarily a bebop jazz vibraphonist, known for his solos as a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet. His composition Bags' Groove (1952) became a jazz standard. Mr. Jackson died of liver cancer.

The Braves jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 6 innings before 48,533 fans at the Astrodome, but the Astros came back with a run in the 7th and 4 in the 8th, and had the potential tying run at bat with none out in the 9th, but John Rocker struck out Jeff Bagwell and Carl Everett, and retired Ken Caminiti on a fly ball to center field to end the game and the series. Mr. Caminiti hit his third home run of the series for Houston, a 3-run blast in the 8th.



American League Division Series
Cleveland 3 @ Boston 9 (Cleveland led best-of-five series 2-1)

The Red Sox scored 6 runs in the 7th inning to break a 3-3 tie and beat the Indians before 33,539 fans at Fenway Park. John Valentin and Brian Daubach hit home runs for Boston.

Roger Clemens went 7 innings in getting the win for the Yankees before 50,269 fans at the Ballpark in Arlington, while Darryl Strawberry’s 3-run home run in the 1st inning provided all the scoring.
