U.S. President Richard Nixon addressed a joint session of the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa, saying that the U.S. recognized Canada’s desire to end American domination of the Canadian economy and that the two nations should always maintain their “very separate identities.” Noting that his visit came midway between his trips to Peking and Moscow, Mr. Nixon termed U.S.-Canadian relations as the model for an even wider goal, “a better world order,” adding, “We can walk our own road in our own way without moving further apart.”

At least 15 Islamic nations in Africa and Asia joined in a general strike to protest the April 11 attack by Israeli soldier Alan Harry Goodman on the Dome of the Rock, the Islamic shrine on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. Mr. Goodman had been captured by Israeli police and border guards after shooting and killing at least 2 Arabs and wounding at least 30, but King Khalid of Saudi Arabia had called for a strike against Israel to protest Mr. Goodman’s attack. Businesses, airports, and banks were closed.

Jose Alexandre “Xanana” Gusmao won a landslide victory in soon-to-be-independent East Timor’s first presidential election.

Tiger Woods won the Masters at Augusta, Georgia for the second straight year and the third time in his career.

Canada, represented by the Randy Ferbey rink from Alberta, defeated Norway 10-5 to win the men’s world championship.
