The U.S.A. launched Ranger 4, whose mission was to impact on the Moon and conduct television photography and X-ray spectroscopy of the lunar surface, and rough-land a seismometer on the moon.



Boxing
Cassius Clay (13-0) scored a technical knockout over George Logan (22-8-1) at 1:34 of the 4th round of a heavyweight bout at Los Angeles Sports Arena.

Leotis Martin (2-0) knocked out Bob Rutherford (2-1) in the 4th round of a heavyweight bout at Alhambra Athletic Club in Philadelphia.

Space
Apollo 16 astronauts John Young and Charlie Duke concluded three days of exploration of the Descartes highlands on the Moon. Their three excursions totalled 20 hours and 14 minutes, covering 11 miles in the lunar rover and resulting in the collection of 214 pounds of lunar rocks and soil samples. The astronauts also set up a $40-million science station. Meanwhile, in the command module Casper, Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly conducted experiments. The lunar module Orion lifted off from the Moon later in the day and docked with Casper.





Economics and finance
By a margin of 68.5%-31.5%, French voters approved the United Kingdom’s entry into the European Economic Community effective January 1, 1973.

Bobby Rousseau scored 2 goals and 2 assists to lead the Rangers to a sweep over the Black Hawks at Madison Square Garden. Bobby Hull opened the scoring for Chicago at 5:37 of the 1st period. It was his last goal in his last game after 15 years with the Black Hawks; he signed with the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association in the off-season.

Mike Walton and Johnny McKenzie each scored 2 goals as the Bruins routed the Blues at St. Louis Arena. Peter McDuffe, called up from the Denver Spurs of the Western Hockey League, played the entire game in goal for St. Louis, as regulars Jacques Caron and Ernie Wakely were deemed too injured to play.

Satyajit Ray, 70
. Indian film director and writer. Mr. Ray, probably the most famous director in Bollywood history, was known for such films as Pather Panchali (1955); Aparajito (1956); The World of Apu (1959); and The Visitor (1991). He was honoured with an Academy Award for lifetime achievement just before his death, which took place nine days before his 71st birthday.

Environment
Canadian Environment Minister Jean Charest announced that 22,000 square kilometres on Baffin Island would be the site of a new national park.
