Jean-Paul Marat, 50
. French physician, scientist, and journalist. Dr. Marat was a court physician to the aristocracy who became a scientist and later a journalist who wrote in support of the French Revolution. Dr. Marat was a Jacobin who supported the more radical aspects of the revolution, as opposed to the Girondins, who opposed the revolution's excesses. He was stabbed to death in his bathtub by Charlotte Corday, a Girondin sympathizer to whom he had granted an interview because she claimed to have information on the activities of Girnodins who had escaped to Normandy.

. U.S. television personality. Mr. Garroway, one of the most popular figures of the early years of television, hosted the Today show on NBC from 1952-1961. He shot himself to death at his home in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania on July 21, 1982 at the age of 69, shortly after undergoing heart surgery.

U.K. troops in Sicily took the port of Augusta and pushed north toward Catania, while U.S. troops on the southern Sicilian coast took the Axis airfields at Comiso and Ponte Olivo. In the heaviest Allied air attack on any Italian town, a strong force of U.K. Royal Air Force bombers made a concentrated attack on the manufacturing centre of Turin. U.S. warships sank a Japanese light cruiser and three destroyers in the Kula Gulf, north of New Georgia Island.

The U.S. State Department announced that Admiral Georges Robert had terminated his regime in Martinique and that Henri-Etienne Hoppenot, representing the French Committee of National Liberation, had been recognized as Governor General.

The Argentine Interior Ministry ordered German culture and welfare organizations closed within 48 hours, and also banned Communist groups.

Medicine
The U.S. Navy announced that a "mist-like" inhalable serum had been developed at the University of California that was 90% effective in preventing influenza.

Bobby Doerr of the Boston Red Sox hit a 3-run home run off Mort Cooper of the St. Louis Cardinals in the bottom of the 2nd inning to give the AL a 3-1 lead, and that proved to be the big blow. Mr. Doerr also added a single. Vince DiMaggio of the Pittsburgh Pirates entered the game as a pinch hitter in the 4th inning and singled. He later tripled and scored, and hit a solo home run for the NL. Dutch Leonard of the Washington Nationals started on the mound for the AL and pitched the first 3 innings to get credit for the win. 31,938 attended the first All-Star Game to be played at night.

. German actor. Mr. Fritsch was a leading man and character actor in more than 120 movies from 1921-1964. He mainly appeared in comic roles, but also appeared in dramas such as Spione (Spies) (1928) and Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon) (1929). Mr. Fritsch died of a heart attack.

Hal Breeden of the Montreal Expos tied a major league record established 30 years earlier by Joe Cronin when he came up as a pinch hitter in both games of a doubleheader and hit home runs each time. The Expos beat the Atlanta Braves 11-7 in the first game at Atlanta Stadium, while the Braves won the second game 15-6. Jim Lyttle also came to bat as a pinch hitter for the Expos and hit a home run.

Bobby Murcer hit 3 home runs and drove in all the runs as the New York Yankees blanked the Kansas City Royals 5-0. Mel Stottlemyre pitched a 6-hitter for his 39th career major league shutout.

Gabrielle Roy, 74
. Canadian authoress. Miss Roy, a native of St. Boniface, Manitoba, won the Governor General's Award for Fiction three times. She first won the award for her novel Bonheur d'occasion (1945), translated into English as The Tin Flute (1947), which has been credited as helping lay the foundation for Quebec's Quiet Revolution in the 1960s.

Vice President George Bush cast the deciding vote as the United States Senate voted 50-49 to authorize production of nerve gas weapons, consisting of two comparatively harmless chemicals placed in separate compartments of a bomb or shell that combined to form nerve gas when the weapon was exploded. Chemical weapons had been banned in the U.S. since 1969, but the administration of President Ronald Reagan had promoted their revival in the belief that the U.S.S.R. had improved upon its arsenal of similar weapons.

The Mexican Federal Election Commission announced that Carlos Salinas de Cortari, presidential candidate of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), had won the July 6 election with 50% of the vote to 31% for Cuauhtemoc Cardenas of the National Democratic Front and 17% for Manuel Clouthier of the National Action Party. Mr. Salinas' share was far below the usual total for PRI presidential candidates. The PRI also lost ground in the national Chamber of Deputies, retaining a bare majority. In the Senate, the PRI lost four seats, an unprecedented result. Opposition parties denounced the election as fraudulent.

The Boston Red Sox, in fourth place in the American League East Division with a record of 43-42, fired manager John McNamara and replaced him with third base coach Joe Morgan.

Davey Allison, 32
. U.S. auto racing driver. Mr. Allison was a stock car driver on the NASCAR circuit who won 19 Winston Cup races from 1985-1993, including the 1992 Daytona 500. He was killed when he crashed while attempting to land his helicopter at Talladega Superspeedway in Birmingham, Alabama.

U.S. and Florida officials announced an agreement with agricultural interests on a $465-million plan to clean up the Everglades.

The AL scored 3 runs in each of the 5th and 6th innings as they beat the NL before 48,147 fans. Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins, who hit a solo home run in the 2nd inning and doubled in a run in the 5th, was voted the game's Most Valuable Player. Mark Langston of the Seattle Mariners was the starting pitcher for the AL, and he gave up a 2-run homer to Gary Sheffield of the San Diego Padres. Jack McDowell of the Chicago White Sox, who pitched the 5th inning, was the winning pitcher. Terry Mulholland of the Philadelphia Phillies started on the mound for the NL. John Burkett of the San Francisco Giants, who started the 5th inning but was unable to get the final out, was the losing pitcher. Roberto Alomar of the Toronto Blue Jays also homered for the AL. The win was the AL's 6th straight.

Politics and government
Iraq's 25-person interim governing council (including 2 women) was inaugurated and met in Baghdad for the first time. It was granted authority to operate government ministries, name diplomats, approve a budget, and create a commission to draft a new constitution. Among their first decisions was one to abolish six holidays celebrated under the regime of deposed President Saddam Hussein and to create a committee to set up a criminal court for trying top officials in Mr. Hussein's government for war crimes.
