Edward VI, 15
. King of England, 1547-1553. Edward VI was son of King Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour. He succeeded to the throne upon his father's death. A devout Protestant who was plagued by poor health in his last few months, he and his Council attempted to arrange for his Protestant cousin Lady Jane Grey to succeed him on the throne, but her "reign" lasted just nine days, and Edward's older sister Mary I, a Roman Catholic, became Queen.

. U.K. social activist. Mr. Sharp was one of the first Englishmen to campaign for the abolition of slavery. He founded the St. George's Bay Company with the intention of settling free Negroes in Sierra Leone. Mr. Sharp was also a Trinitarian Bible scholar and a founder of the British and Foreign Bible Society, and the Society for the Conversion of the Jews.

The small town of Pomeroy, Iowa, was nearly destroyed by a tornado that killed 71 people and injured 200.

Otto Klemperer, 88
. German conductor and composer. Mr. Klemperer conducted various orchestras in Germany before fleeing to the United States when the Nazis took power in Germany in 1933. He was music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra for several years, before returning to Europe after World War II, where he worked with various orchestras. Among Mr. Klemperer's compositions were nine symphonies. He was the father of actor Werner Klemperer, who played Colonel Klink in the television comedy series Hogan's Heroes (1965-1971).

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Arizona Governing Committee v. Norris that an employer-sponsored retirement plan could not pay women lower monthly benefits than it paid men. In Barefoot v. Estelle the court ruled 5-4 to permit expedited death penalty appeals. The decision, which went against convicted Texas murderer Thomas Barefoot, upheld a federal appeals court ruling that a defendant could not use habeas corpus petitions to delay execution indefinitely.

Basketball
In the World University Games, Yugoslavia defeated Canada 61-54 in men's competition at Universiade Pavilion in Edmonton.

Fred Lynn's grand slam in the 3rd inning off Atlee Hammaker was the big blow as the AL scored 7 runs in the inning--all off Mr. Hammaker--on the way to their first win in 12 years before 43,801 fans. Mr. Lynn, representing the California Angels, was voted the game's most valuable player. Dave Stieb of the Toronto Blue Jays started on the mound for the AL and pitched 3 innings to get the win over NL starter Mario Soto of the Cincinnati Reds, who gave up 2 runs in 2 innings. Mr. Hammaker, representing the San Francisco Giants, turned in the worst pitching performance in All-Star history, and his career never recovered.

Politics and government
Presidential and legislative elections took place in Mexico, but the vote count was slow and announced results were rejected by opposition candidates. Carlos Salinas de Cortari, representing the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), was the favourite in the presidential election. He was opposed by Manuel Clouthier of the conservative National Action Party and Cuauhtemoc Cardenas of the leftist National Democratic Front. Mr. Salinas was declared the winner with 50.7% of the vote to 31.1% for National Democratic Front (FDN) candidate Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas and 16.8% for National Action Party (PAN) candidate Manuel Clouthier. In legislative elections, the PRI captured 60 of 64 seats in the Senate and 260 of 500 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, with the PAN next with 101.

Disasters
The Piper Alpha drilling platform in the North Sea was destroyed by explosions and fires. 167 oil workers, most of them from Scotland, were killed, making it the world's worst offshore oil disaster in terms of direct loss of life.

Crime
Karla Homolka, estranged wife of accused murderer Paul Bernardo, aka Paul Teale, was found guilty of two charges of manslaughter and sentenced to two concurrent 12-year prison terms in connection with the deaths of Ontario teenagers Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French. The courtroom was closed to the public and Justice Francis Kovacs imposed a publication ban on details pending Mr. Bernardo's trial. When his trial did take place, video evidence showed that Ms. Homolka was a willing participant in the crimes and not acting under coercion, as she had claimed in her trial.

Roger Federer of Switzerland won the men's singles tite at Wimbledon, defeating Mark Philippoussis of Australia 7-6, 6-2, 7-6. Martina Navratilova tied Billie Jean King's record for the most Wimbledon titles at 20, teaming with Leander Paes of India to win the mixed doubles championship.
