Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, 73. Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, 1885-1886; 1886-1892; 1895-1902. The Marquess of Salisbury, a Conservative, died 50 years to the day that he'd first entered the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Stamford in Lincolnshire. He was the last British Prime Minister to lead his full administration from the House of Lords, which he'd entered in 1868. Lord Salisbury's motto was "Whatever happens will be for the worse, and therefore it is in our interest that as little should happen as possible." Mister, we could use a man like Lord Salisbury again.

The game was staged as a benefit for Hamilton halfback Bobby McDonald, who had recently been stricken with polio. Among the players from other clubs playing with Sarnia was Joe Krol of the Toronto Argonauts, who suffered an injury that shortened his season.

Politics and government
The Congress of Chile voted in favour of a resolution condemning President Salvador Allende's government and demanded that he resign or else be unseated through force, with new elections to be called.
U.S. President Richard Nixon nominated national security adviser Henry Kissinger as Secretary of State to replace William Rogers, who resigned the same day.
Scandal
U.S. President Richard Nixon, in his first press conference in five months, acknowledged that the scandal involving the 1972 break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. had hampered his ability to govern. He said he had never considered resigning and would serve out the remainder of his term with the full authority of a strong presidency. Mr. Nixon defended Vice-President Spiro Agnew and condemned "the outrageous leak in information from either the grand jury or the Justice Department or all three." On the matter of whether to make public his recordings of White House conversations relevant to the Watergate investigation, Mr. Nixon said he would abide by a "definitive" decision of the U.S. Supreme Court.

World events
The government of Burundi said that at least 5,000 people had been killed in ethnic clashes between the ruling Tutsi tribe and the Hutu tribe. Although they constituted only about 15% of the population, Tutsis ran the government and the army with a firm hand. A slaughter of the virtually defenseless Hutu by the army apparently followed a minor skirmish.

Abominations
The Alabama Judicial Inquiry Commission filed a complaint with the Alabama Court of the Judiciary (COJ), effectively suspending Chief Justice Roy Moore for his refusal two days before to enforce an order from a federal judge to remove from the rotunda of the State Supreme Court building in Montgomery a rock inscribed with the Ten Commandments. The COJ ordered the rock removed, using the ridiculous argument that the display violated the separation of church and state.

U.S. President George W. Bush ordered a freeze on the assets of six leaders of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas and five charities said to support Hamas.
