John Geoghan, 68
. U.S. clergyman and pedophile. Rev. Geoghan, a Roman Catholic priest in the Boston Archdiocese from 1962-1993, had been convicted of molesting a 10-year-old boy and faced pending criminal and civil charges involving 130 alleged victims. He was strangled and stomped to death at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts, by his cellmate, convicted murderer Joseph Druce.

Bobby Bonds, 57. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Bonds was a right fielder with the San Francisco Giants (1968-1974); New York Yankees (1975); California Angels (1976-1977); Chicago White Sox (1978); Texas Rangers (1978); Cleveland Indians (1979); St. Louis Cardinals (1980); and Chicago Cubs (1981), batting .268 with 332 home runs, 1,024 runs batted in, and 461 stolen bases in 1,849 games. His best season was probably 1973, when he hit .283 with 39 home runs, 96 RBIs, and 43 stolen bases, and was named the Most Valuable Player in the 1973 Major League All-Star Game. If Mr. Bonds had hit just one more home run in 1973 he would have been the first major league player to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases in the same season. A leadoff hitter, Mr. Bonds hit a grand slam home run in his first major league game and at one time held the major league records for home runs leading off a game for a career (35) and in a sngle season (11, in 1973). In 1969 he had the dubious distinction of setting a major league single-season record by striking out 187 times, and broke that with 189 strikeouts the following year--a record that stood until 2004. Mr. Bonds finished his playing career with the Columbus Clippers of the International League in 1982 and served as the hitting coach with the Indians (1984-1987) and Giants (1993-1996). In the latter position he was on the same team as his son Barry, who eventually became the official major league career home run leader. Bobby Bonds died of a brain tumor and lung cancer.
