William Penn, 49. English military officer and politician. Sir William was an admiral in the Royal Navy who fought on the side of Parliament in the First English Civil War, but was also in contact with the Royalists before the Restoration. He represented Weymouth and Melcombe Regis in the Convention Parliament (1660) and the Cavalier Parliament from 1661 until his death. Sir William was owed money by the Crown, but his son William accepted the grant of land in the American colonies in lieu of the money, and founded Pennsylvania.

John Boland. U.K. tennis player and politician. Mr. Boland, a native of Dublin, won gold medals in men's singles and doubles competition at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. He was an Irish nationalist and a member of the Irish Parliamentary party, representing South Kerry in the U.K. House of Commons (1900-1918). Mr. Boland died in London on March 17, 1958 at the age of 87.

Erich Kempka. German SS officer. Obersturmbannführer Kempka joined the Nazi Party and the SS in 1930. He became a reserve chauffeur for Adolf Hitler in 1932, and became Mr. Hitler's primary chauffeur in 1936. Obersturmbannführer Kempka was at the Fuehrerbunker in Berlin when Mr. Hitler and Eva Braun committed suicide on April 30, 1945, and delivered the gasoline behind the Reich Chancellery where their bodies were burned. He was in U.S. custody from June 1945-October 1947, but was never charged as a war criminal. Obersturmbannführer Kempka died on January 24, 1975 at the age of 64.
Karl Kling. German auto racing driver. Mr. Kling participated in 11 Formula One races (1954-1955), and became the first German driver to record a podium finish when, in his first race, he finished second in the 1954 French Grand Prix. He reached the podium once more, finishing third in the British Grand Prix in 1955. Mr. Kling won the non-championship Berlin Grand Prix in 1955, and managed and drove in road rallies from the mid-1950s through 1968. He died on March 18, 2003 at the age of 92.

William A. McGuire, 59. U.S. playwright, screenwriter, and director. Mr. McGuire wrote and directed Broadway plays in the 1910s and '20s, and screenplays from the 1910s until his death from uremia. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for The Great Ziegfeld (1936).

Commander-in-Chief of the United Nations Command General Douglas MacArthur reported to the United Nations Security Council that the U.S.S.R. "has provided and is now providing" considerable arms aid to North Korea. He said that the previous days's landing of U.S. Marines at Inchon was designed to end the Korean War before winter by stranding North Korean forces in the South and causing them to "disintegrate." The U.S. 8th Army broke out of the Pusan perimeter and moved northward against N.K. forces.

Jean Piaget, 84. Swiss psychologist. Dr. Piaget was perhaps the most influential figure in the field of developmental psychology, with an emphasis on the education of children. He referred to his theory of cognitive development and knowledge as "genetic epistemology," and argued that children's education is influenced by the understanding and experience they acquire prior to beginning school. Dr. Piaget created and directed the Centre international d'épistémologie génétique from 1955 until his death.

There was little excitement in the second half, with the scoring consisting of 2 field goals by Lui Passaglia of the Lions and 1 by Sean Fleming of the Eskimos. It was the first CFL game for backup offensive lineman George Hudson, who wore #56 for the Eskimos, and was still an active player in the CFL 10 years later.

After scoring a converted touchdown to reduce the deficit to 31-28, a short kickoff was perfectly executed, with a Regina player taking the ball in full stride and going for the touchdown. Kevin Karius, broadcasting for the Golden Bears on CJSR, called the play as, "Oh my goodness...OH MY GOODNESS!"

The Arizona Diamondbacks scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning before the first out was recorded, but John Rocker relieved Terry Mulholland and struck out 3 straight batters to preserve a 12-10 win for the Atlanta Braves before 41,470 fans at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix.
