Selim I, 49
. Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, 1512-1520. Selim I, nicknamed Selim the Formidable, acceded to the throne upon the death of his father Bayezid II. Selim I was the first Ottoman caliph; his conquest of the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt (1516-1517) contributed to a 70% increase in the size of the Ottoman Empire. He was one of the empire's most successful sultans, although he was known for executing several of his viziers. Sultan Selim I died of cancer, 18 days before his 50th birthday, and was succeeded by his son Suleiman I "the Magnficent."

Ben Chifley
. Prime Minister of Australia, 1945-1949. Mr. Chifley, a member of the Labour Party, represented Macquarie in the Australian Parliament (1928-1931, 1940-1951), and held several cabinet posts, including Treasurer (1941-1949), before becoming Prime Minister and Labour Party leader after the death of John Curtin in 1945. He presided over Australia's transition from a wartime to a peacetime economy, and expanded the welfare state. The Labour Party was defeated in the 1949 federal election by the Liberal Party of Robert Menzies, and Mr. Chifley remained as Leader of the Opposition until his death from a heart attack on June 13, 1951 at the age of 65, several weeks after the 1951 federal election. He was succeeded as Labour Party leader by H.V. Evatt.

The New York Yankees released third baseman Bobby Cox. He batted .219 with 9 home runs and 30 runs batted in in 90 games with the Syracuse Chiefs of the AAA International League in 1970.

Tony Oliva’s 2-run home run in the top of the 1st inning got the Minnesota Twins off to a good start as they beat the Oakland Athletics 5-3 before 5,915 fans at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum to clinch the American League West Division title for the second straight season.

Dick Drago (9-14) and Al Fitzmorris (8-5) were the respective winning pitchers for the Kansas City Royals as they swept a doubleheader from the Chicago White Sox 2-1 and 6-2 before 2,369 fans at White Sox Park. Hawk Taylor struck out as a pinch hitter for the Royals in the 6th inning of the second game in the 394th and last game of his 11-year major league career.

Bill Stoneman (6-15) pitched a 6-hitter to outduel Dock Ellis (12-10) and led off the 6th inning with a single that led to the game's only run as the Montreal Expos edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader before 19,524 fans at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. Mr. Stoneman was put out at second base after his hit when Boots Day grounded into a force play, but Mr. Day stole second base and scored on a 2-out triple by Rusty Staub. Mr. Ellis allowed just 5 hits in 7 innings. Bob Veale (10-15) allowed 4 hits in 6.2 innings and Joe Gibbon pitched 2.1 hitless innings to get his 4th save of the season as the Pirates won the second game 3-1. Mike Wegener (3-6) took the loss. Tommie Agee singled home Ken Boswell and Al Weis with 1 out in the 9th inning to enable the New York Mets to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-6 before 5,064 fans at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. The Phillies had runners on first and second bases with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th, but Dean Chance induced Larry Hisle to ground into a double play to end the game.

Mike Lum's infield single with the bases loaded and none out in the bottom of the 9th inning gave the Atlanta Braves a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres before 2,293 fans at Atlanta Stadium. The Padres had tied the game in the top of the 9th on a sacrifice fly by Chris Cannizzaro that scored Ivan Murrell, who suffered season-ending torn knee ligaments in a collision with Atlanta catcher Bob Didier on the play. Jim Nash (13-8) pitched a 5-hit complete game victory, while Earl Wilson (1-6), who entered the game in the 8th inning, allowed 3 hits and 2 runs--both earned--in 1+ inning, walking 1 batter and striking out 1 in the 405th and last game of his 11-year major league career.

The Cincinnati Reds rallied for 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to overcome a 5-0 deficit and defeat the Houston Astros 6-5 before 11,975 fans at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati.

The Lions used all three of their quarterbacks--Joe Paopao, Doug Flutie, and Major Harris--in rolling to an easy win before an unhappy Ivor Wynne Stadium crowd of just 10,270. Mr. Paopao completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jay Christensen in the last minute of the 1st quarter; Kennard Martin rushed 2 yards for a touchdown in the last minute of the 2nd quarter; and Mr. Harris rushed 16 yards for a touchdown in the last minute of the game. Lui Passaglia added 3 converts, 4 field goals, and a single. Paul Osbaldiston had a field goal and a single to account for all the Hamilton scoring. The Tiger-Cats’ offense under quarterbacks Mike Kerrigan, Todd Dillon, and Terry Andrysiak managed just 8 first downs and 136 yards net offense. It was the first game as head coach of the Lions for Bob O’Billovich, replacing Jim Young, who had been a one-game replacement for the fired Lary Kuharich. Tiger-Cats’ owner David Braley, who had recently bought the team after the death of Harold Ballard earlier in the year, fired head coach Al Bruno several days after the game, naming Dave Beckman as his replacement.

The Cincinnati Reds hit 6 home runs and the Houston Astros 3 as the Reds won 12-5 before 32,223 fans at Cinergy Field in Cincinnati. The Astros’ homers gave them a total of 240 for the season, a National League record. Juan Castro, Michael Tucker, and Sean Casey all homered for the Reds in the 2nd inning off Jose Lima (7-16), giving Mr. Lima a National League record of 47 home runs allowed in a season. Mr. Casey hit another homer in the 7th, while Richard Hidalgo hit his 43rd and 44th homers of the season for Houston.
