Disasters
A fuel explosion in an underground Titan II nuclear missile site near Damascus, Arkansas killed one U.S. Air Force employee and injured 21 others. The blast shattered the 750-ton concrete door on top of the silo, and left a crater 250 feet wide. The state police immediately evacuated 1,400 people within a 5-mile radius of the blast for 12 hours as concern mounted over possible radioactive leaks from the 9-megaton warhead that had been attached to the missile. The warhead was designed to detonate only after it was launched and a series of events had occurred. Air Force officials refused to tell the public of the whereabouts and condition of the warhead, which angered local officials and residents.
