26,996 fans at Lansdowne Park saw the Rough Riders earn their first home win of the season. It was the final game for Ottawa tight end Jay Roberts, who had been with the team since 1964 and had scored one of the Rough Riders’ touchdowns in their 1969 Grey Cup win.

Jerry Keeling completed 24 of 43 passes, with 11 of the completions--4 for touchdowns--going to tight end Herm Harrison, as the Stampeders beat the Blue Bombers before 23,553 fans at Winnipeg Stadium.

Baseball
The Detroit Tigers scored 2 unearned runs in the 8th inning to beat the Boston Red Sox 6-4 before 14,704 fans in the first of 2 games at Fenway Park in Boston, but the Red Sox won the second game 10-1 before 18,938 fans. The only Detroit run in the second game came from catcher Gene Lamont, who made his major league debt, and led off the 3rd inning with a home run in his first plate appearance; he finished 2 for 3 with a base on balls, making 10 putouts and 2 assists, while allowing a passed ball. Cal Koonce (3-3) pitched a 3-hitter to win the second game, while batting 1 for 3 with a base on balls, run, and 2 runs batted in; it was the 44th and last win of his major league career.

Dick Bosman (15-9) pitched a 4-hitter and batted 2 for 4 with a run batted in to lead the Washington Senators to a 4-1 win over the Cleveland Indians before 10,509 fans at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington. Sam McDowell (19-9) allowed 10 hits and 4 earned runs in trying to earn his 20th win of the seaoson. With 1 out and runners on first and second bases in the 6th inning, Mr. McDowell moved to first base, and was relieved on the mound by Dean Chance, who promptly allowed Frank Howard to hit an infield single to load the bases. Rick Reichardt then grounded to second baseman Eddie Leon, who threw to shortstop Jack Heidemann at second base to force out Mr. Howard. However, Mr. Reichardt was safe at first base to prevent the double play, and had the unusual achievement of driving in 2 runs, as Ed Brinkman and Wayne Comer both scored on the play, with the runs being charged to Mr. McDowell, who returned to the mound to begin the 7th. John Lowenstein made his major league debut with the Indians, entering the game in left field in the 7th, and striking out in the 9th in his only plate appearance, with no fielding chances. The Indians broke up Mr. Bosman's bid for a shutout when Ted Uhlaender singled with 1 out in the 9th and scored on a 2-out triple by Vada Pinson. Mr. Bosman then struck out Ray Fosse to end the game; it was Mr. Bosman's third strikeout of the inning and eighth of the game. Mr. McDowell issued 5 intentional walks, 3 to Mr. Howard.

Milt Pappas (11-6) allowed 5 hits and 1 run--earned--in 8 innings and hit his second home run of the season as part of an 8-run 4th inning for the Chicago Cubs as they routed the Philadelphia Phillies 17-2 before 16,234 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Terry Hughes made his major league debut with the Cubs, relieving Billy Williams in left field in the 5th inning and moving to third base in place of Ron Santo in the 8th, batting 0 for 2 with no fielding chances.

Gary Nolan (16-5) allowed 3 hits in 8.2 innings and drove in both runs as the Cincinnati Reds shut out the San Francisco Giants 2-0 before 23,282 fans at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. Pittsburgh shortstop Gene Alley hit an inside-the-park grand slam to climax a 6-run 6th inning as the Pirates took a 6-1 lead. Rich Nye, normally a pitcher, entered the game for Montreal as a pinch runner in the 8th inning and scored the last of 4 runs in the inning in the 117th and last game of his 5-year major league career.

Matt Dunigan completed 22 of 32 passes for 293 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushed 8 times for 56 yards and a touchdown as the Eskimos came back from a 17-1 1st-quarter deficit to post their first road win of the season. Larry Hogue returned a Neil Lumsden fumble 35 yards for a touchdown to give the Stampeders, after J.T. Hay’s convert, a 7-0 lead just 1:48 into the game. Larry Mason, who carried 8 times for 31 yards in his first CFL game, rushed 2 yards for another converted touchdown later in the quarter to extend the lead. The Eskimos settled down, and Milson Jones rushed 11 yards for a touchdown midway through the 2nd quarter. The Stampeders led 20-11 at halftime and 22-19 after 3 quarters, as Mr. Dunigan scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to further reduce the deficit. The Eskimos, who had made several lineup changes on defense and had switched from a 3-4 front seven to a more traditional 4-3 set, made 3 interceptions and recovered a Calgary fumble, and eventually translated the turnovers into points. In the 4th quarter, Mr. Dunigan threw touchdown passes of 11 yards to Marco Cyncar and 31 yards to Chris Skinner. Tom Dixon converted both and punted for a single to give the Eskimos a 34-21 lead. Just when it seemed the game was in hand, Ron Hopkins of the Stampeders blocked a punt and linebacker Knox Culpepper, playing his first CFL game, returned it 16 yards for a converted touchdown, pulling the Stampeders within 6 points with 1:17 remaining. The Stampeders got the ball back, and quarterback Joe Barnes found former Eskimo Tag Rome for a 44-yard completion to the Edmonton 54-yard line, although Mr. Barnes had crossed the line of scrimmage, and the play should have been called back. However, Mr. Barnes then threw 2 incomplete passes and was sacked on third down. Eskimo running back Larry Cowan played perhaps his finest CFL game, rushing 15 times for 83 yards and catching 7 passes for 88. Mr. Rome led all receivers with 104 yards on 3 receptions. Gary Thompson, who had failed to make the Eskimos in 1983, played his first regular season game in the CFL and made an interception, with other key interceptions coming from rookie linebacker John Dailey and safety Lou DesLauriers. Former Montreal Alouette and Concorde James Zachery played his first game as an Eskimo at defensive tackle and recovered a Calgary fumble. Jack Williams, who had been cut from the Eskimos and the Stampeders during the pre-season of 1982 before playing with the Ottawa Rough Riders, played his only regular season game as an Eskimo at defensive end. Edmonton slotback Rick House suffered a season-ending shoulder separation when he was tackled at the end of a 38-yard completion. Oddly, it was in about the same place in the field that Edmonton receiver Pete Ribbins had suffered a shoulder separation during the 1977 Labour Day game. Meanwhile, former Eskimo slotback Dan Runge played his first game as a Stampeder. 18,253, the largest crowd of the season thus far, attended the game on a beautiful sunny afternoon at McMahon Stadium.

Ron Ingram made a spectacular diving end zone catch of a 43-yard pass from Ken Hobart with 2:17 remaining in the game to lift the Tiger-Cats to victory before an Ivor Wynne Stadium crowd of 15,549. It was the only Hamilton touchdown of the game, and came about 8½ minutes after Mark Stevens, Montreal’s third quarterback to see action during the game, had completed a 75-yard pass to Dwaine Wilson for the Concordes’ only touchdown. Bernie Ruoff kicked 4 field goals and a convert for the Tiger-Cats, while Roy Kurtz kicked 3 field goals and a convert for the Concordes. Turner Gill started at quarterback for Montreal and Gerry Dattilio briefly relieved him, but they each surrendered 2 interceptions. Mr. Hobart was relieved for a time by Jeff Tedford, who was ineffective.

The big blow was a team record 107-yard bomb from Mr. Austin to Jeff Fairholm at 9:50 of the first quarter, giving the Roughriders a 10-3 lead after Dave Ridgway’s convert. Saskatchewan led 41-10 at halftime and coasted from there. Don Narcisse caught 2 of Mr. Austin’s scoring passes and Mark Guy had the other. Orville Lee rushed for touchdown in the 4th quarter, and backup quarterback Jeff Bentrim completed the rout by throwing a touchdown pass to Lucius Floyd.
