Konon Molody, aka Gordon Lonsdale, 48. U.S.S.R. spy. Mr. Molody spent some time in the U.S.A. in the 1930s before returning to the Soviet Union, serving as a spy during World War II. He joined the foreign intelligence service of the internal security agency MGB in 1951, and was sent to Canada in 1953 under the name Gordon Lonsdale, the name of an actual person born in Canada in 1924 who had died in Finland in 1943. Mr. Molody settled in London in 1954, ostensibly as a salesman of bubble gum and gambling machines, requiring business trips to Europe. In 1959 he began receiving British military secrets from U.K. Admiralty employee Harry Houghton, and was among five arrested on January 7, 1961 for their involvement in the Portland Spy Ring, with Mr. Molody as the mastermind. He was convicted of espionage in march 1961 and sentenced to 25 years in prison, but was exchanged in April 1964 or Greville Wynne. Mr. Molody reportedly developed health problems after returning to the U.S.S.R., receiving injections for allegedly high blood pressure. He died during a mushroom-picking expedition; some sources report the date as September 9 or October 9, 1970.
