Heinrich Himmler, 44. German SS officer. Mr. Himmler was Reichsführer of the Schutzstaffel (SS), one of the most powerful figures in Germany's Nazi regime, and, As facilitator and overseer of concentration camps, one of the people most responsible for the genocide of Jews in World War II. While attempting to escape Germany in the aftermath of Germany's surrender to Allied forces, Mr. Himmler was arrested on May 21, 1945, and committed suicide by biting on a cyanide pill two days later at the age of 44.

Mr. Reynolds struck out Mr. Lopata, and the Yankees had won their second straight World Series.

Two days after FLQ terrorists had kidnapped British Trade Commissioner James Cross from his Montreal residence, the FLQ Manifesto was read over radio station CKAC; the demands of the terrorists expired without action from the federal or provincial governments. At 9:00 A.M., police discovered the taxi used for the kidnapping of Mr. Cross; at noon, Windsor Station was ransacked; in the afternoon, the FLQ issued two more communiqués, and at 6:00 P.M., their lawyer, Robert Lemieux, held a press conference to discuss the government's offer to negotiate.

World events
General Juan Jose Torres, backed by the air force, toppled the rightist military junta that had taken over Bolivia two days earlier, and promised a "popular nationalist government." General Torres had turned from anti-Communist to leftist after heading the operation that had wiped out the guerrilla band of Che Guevara in 1967.

Egypt’s National Assembly named Vice President Anwar Sadat to succeed the late Gamal Nasser as President. Mr. Sadat, 52, promised to carry out Mr. Nasser’s policies and "to continue the struggle for liberation of Arab lands."

In a nationally-televised address, U.S. President Richard Nixon proposed a "cease-fire in place" throughout Indochina "without preconditions," and asked North Vietnam and the Viet Cong to agree to it so that the "logjam" in the Paris peace talks could be broken. Mr. Nixon’s 5-point program also called for a timetable for troop withdrawals; a political settlement for South Vietnam; and the immediate release of prisoners of war--all of which he had touched on in his peace plan of May 14, 1969.

Jerry Keeling’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Dave Cranmer at 11:00 of the 3rd quarter proved to be enough for the Stampeders. The game was played in a snowstorm at McMahon Stadium and was tied 0-0 at halftime. Larry Robinson kicked a 30-yard field goal early in the 3rd quarter to give Calgary a 3-0 lead. The Alouettes got on the scoreboard with a 73-yard punt by Sonny Wade. The Stampeders’ touchdown made it 10-1 before George Springate kicked a 30-yard field goal for Montreal to make the score 10-4. Mr. Robinson scored the only point of the 4th quarter on a single off a missed 44-yard field goal. Justin Canale attempted a 42-yard field goal for the Alouettes, but it was wide and returned out of the end zone. Hugh McKinnis rushed 14 times for 99 yards to lead the Calgary ground game; Moses Denson led the Alouettes with 110 yards on just 6 carries, while Dennis Duncan carried 18 times for 63 yards. Mr. Keeling completed 7 of 18 passes for 120 yards, while Mr. Wade was 9 for 19 for 97 yards and an interception and his backup, Tony Passander, was 6 for 12 for 68 yards and 2 interceptions. The Montreal quarterbacks were repeatedly sacked by the Stampeders’ "Four Trees" defensive line of John Helton, Fred James, Craig Koinzan, and Dick Suderman. Calgary interceptions were made by Ron Stewart, Frank Andruski, and Gig Perez. It was the final game as an Alouette for offensive halfback Dick Smith, whose performance didn’t satisfy head coach Sam Etcheverry, despite the fact that he led the team in pass receptions that season with 47. Mr. Smith was traded to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers a few days later.

The Pittsburgh Pirates fired Chuck Tanner after 9 years as manager. Mr. Tanner had managed the Pirates to the World Series championship in 1979, but the team had declined since, finishing 6th and last in the National League East Division in 1985 with a record of 57-104.

Bob Lillis, who had replaced Bill Virdon as manager of the Houston Astros during the 1982 season, was fired after guiding the team to an 83-79 record in 1985, tying them for third place in the NL West Division with the San Diego Padres.

Vernon Mitchell of the Argonauts set a CFL single-game record with 3 touchdowns on interception returns and Fred Perry returned a fumble for another to lead the Argonauts to victory before 20,729 fans at SkyDome. Hamilton quarterback Danny McManus dressed but was unable to play because of a hamstring injury, and rookie backup Billy Dicken started. His fumble was returned 4 yards for a touchdown by Mr. Perry just 1:10 into the game, and at 5:03 Mr. Mitchell returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown. Mr. Dicken left the game after completing just 1 of 8 passes for 4 yards, and losing 2 fumbles, and was replaced by Todd Bankhead, who was 12 for 22 for 116 yards and 2 interceptions. Late in the first quarter, Donnavan Carter intercepted one of Mr. Bankhead’s passes and returned it 28 yards before lateralling to Mr. Mitchell, who ran the last 6 yards for the touchdown. The Argonauts didn’t score another touchdown until the 4th quarter, when Mr. Mitchell made another interception and returned it 23 yards for a major score. Jacob Marini converted all 4 Toronto touchdowns, and Noel Prefontaine punted for a single. The lone Hamilton touchdown came in the 3rd quarter on a 14-yard pass from Mr. Bankhead to Andrew Grigg. Paul Osbaldiston converted and added a field goal, and the Tiger-Cats scored a safety touch in the 1st quarter. The Tiger-Cats amassed just 10 first downs and 130 yards net offense, but the Argonauts, under quarterback Kerwin Bell, were about equally ineffective, getting just 11 first downs and 135 yards net offense.
