Diplomacy
In Washington, D.C., the Joint High Commission issued a Canada/Alaska boundary award, the commissioners voting 4-2 to support the U.S. claim for a boundary running behind the heads of the inlets, but agreeing to equal distribution of four islands at the mouth of Portland Canal. The British commissioner, Lord Alverstone, Lord Chief Justice of England, broke the deadlock, but the two Canadian members, A.B. Aylesworth and Sir Louis Jetté, refused to sign the lopsided award and returned to Ottawa. The Alaska Boundary Crisis led to a Canada's determination to protect its own interest through the creation of the Department of External Affairs.

Scandal
In what became known as the "Saturday Night Massacre," U.S. Attorney General Elliot Richardson resigned and his deputy William Ruckelshaus and special prosecutor Archibald Cox were fired when Mr. Cox, who had been hired to investigate the June 1972 break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. and the subsequent cover-up, rejected a compromise proposed by the administration of President Richard Nixon regarding an order by federal district court Judge John Sirica to turn over tapes of White House conversations, and threatened to secure a judicial ruling that Mr. Nixon was violating a court order by refusing to turn over the tapes to Mr. Cox. Mr. Cox argued that Mr. Nixon's proposed compromise would create "insuperable difficulties" in conducting a criminal investigation. Mr. Richardson was ordered to dismiss Mr. Cox, but resigned instead, saying that to dismiss the prosecutor would conflict with his pledge to provide Mr. Cox with "full authority" to contest presidential claims of executive privilege. When Mr. Ruckelshaus also refused to fire Mr. Cox, he was fired himself. Mr. Cox was finally dismissed by Solicitor General Robert Bork, who became acting Attorney General. The White House ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to seal the offices of Messrs. Cox, Richardson, and Ruckelshaus.
