Politics and government
In the Quebec provincial election, Premier Robert Bourassa led his Liberal party to re-election, winning 102 seats for to 6 for the separatist Parti Québécois, and 2 Crédit Social. No Union Nationale members were elected, an embarrassing showing for the party that had governed the province from 1944-1970. The Liberals captured 54% of the vote, while the PQ, despite its low number of seats, won 31% of the vote, a 7% increase from the 1970 election. Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was pleased with the outcome, saying, "The people of Quebec have overwhelmingly voted for the party that is squarely on the side of federalism, and voted for Canada."

Scandal
Sources close to the investigation of the June 1972 break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. reported that former U.S. Attorney General Richard Kleindienst had told the Watergate prosecution that President Richard Nixon had personally ordered him in 1971 not to press a series of anti-trust actions against International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation. The consequent delay of an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court had made way for an out-of-court settlement considered favourable to ITT. The White House denied the accuracy of the report.

Kevin Starkey completed touchdown passes of 28 and 45 yards to Ron Robinson, and Denny Ferdinand rushed 33 yards for another TD, as the Concordes held off a late rally to defeat the Rough Riders before 20,959 fans at Lansdowne Park. The Concordes led 25-8 until Chris Isaac, who relieved starter Prince McJunkins at quarterback for the Rough Riders, threw touchdown passes to Pat Stoqua and Dave Newman in the last 8 1/2 minutes of the game. Ottawa attempted two 2-point converts, but neither succeeded. Mr. McJunkins rushed 14 times for 156 yards, but completed just 9 of 24 passes for 107 yards and 2 interceptions, and failed to produce a touchdown. Mr. Isaac completed 10 of 16 passes for 142 passes with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Mr. Starkey, a former Rough Rider, completed 11 of 24 passes for 156 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Mr. Ferdinand led Montreal's rushing game with 82 yards on 8 carries, while Lester Brown added 70 yards on just 4 carries. Ottawa running back Skip Walker, the CFL's rushing leader, carried 11 times for 60 yards and caught 5 passes for 49.

Joe Barnes, who replaced starter Condredge Holloway at quarterback to start the 2nd half, rushed 24 yards for a touchdown with 13 seconds remaining in the game to give the Argonauts their win over the Eskimos before 53,577 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. The loss all but eliminated the defending Grey Cup champions from playoff contention; having finished their season a week ahead of every other team, their only chance was if last-place Saskatchewan Roughriders were to defeat the Stampeders in Calgary eight days later. Edmonton kicker Dave Cutler had perhaps the worst game of his CFL career, missing 5 of 6 field goal attempts, including 2 in the last 2 minutes. All 5 of his misses went for single points, the last giving the Eskimos a 15-14 lead with 1:02 remaining. Mr. Barnes, who entered the game with his team trailing 12-1 at halftime, completed 13 of 21 passes for 186 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown to Emanuel Tolbert early in the 4th quarter, and rushed 3 times for 43 yards. Tom Scott scored the only Edmonton touchdown on a 31-yard pass from Warren Moon with 1:17 left in the 1st half. Mr. Moon completed just 20 of 45 passes for 335 yards and rushed 5 times for 31 yards. Mr. Holloway completed just 4 of 20 passes for 74 yards. Larry Cowan of the Eskimos led all rushers with 98 yards on 10 carries; Cedric Minter led the Argonauts with 9 carries for 75 yards. Edmonton's Brian Kelly caught 4 passes, giving him 104 for the season, 2 more than Joey Walters' 1982 record total of 102. Toronto's Terry Greer also caught 4 passes, giving him 100 receptions for the season with 1 game remaining. The Eskimos added four players to their Wall of Honour: Jackie Parker, Johnny Bright, Normie Kwong, and Rollie Miles. It was the last home game for many of the players who had helped the Eskimos win five straight Grey Cups from 1978-1982, including Mr. Moon.
