William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, 88
. U.K. politician and judge. Mr. Murray held various cabinet posts, including Solicitor General for England and Wales (1742-1754) and Attorney General for England and Wales (1754-1756). He was Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench (1756-1788), and became known as the greatest legal genius of his generation. Mr. Murray's legal reforms included the ruling in Somerset v Stewart (1772) that slavery had no basis in English common law and had never been established in England and Wales by statute.

Amanda Clement
. U.S. baseball umpire. Miss Clement played various sports, and sometime during the period 1903-1905, became the first woman to be paid to umpire a game, when she substituted for an absent umpire in a semi-professional game in Hawarden, Iowa. She umpired regularly for six years and occasionally for many years thereafter, and may have been the first woman to referee a high school basketball game. Miss Clement worked at several occupations, and was a social worker in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for 25 years until her retirement in 1966. She died on July 20, 1971 at the age of 83.

Opera
Children of the Forests, the first Romani-language operetta, received its premiere performance in Moscow.

Jack Barry
. U.S. television game show host and producer. Born John Barasch, Mr. Barry co-produced the game shows Twenty-One and Tic-Tac-Dough in the late 1950s. When it was revealed in 1958 that the outcome of Twenty-One was fixed, Mr. Barry's career was ruined for several years. He eventually made a comeback in the 1970s, hosting the game show The Joker's Wild, which ran on CBS from 1972-1975 and in syndication beginning in 1977. Mr. Barry had just completed another season as the show's host when he suffered a fatal heart attack while jogging on May 2, 1984 at the age of 66.

Marian McPartland. U.K.-born U.S. musician. Mrs. McPartland, born Margaret Marian Turner, was a jazz pianist who began performing and composing in the 1930s. She met American jazz cornetist Jimmy McPartland while he was performing in Britain in 1944, and the two were married in 1945, moving to the U.S. in 1946. Mrs. McPartland had a long career, which included hosting Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz on National Public Radio from 1978-2011. She died at the age of 95 on August 20, 2013.

Lewis A. Grant, 90
. U.S. military officer and politician. Brevet Major General Grant, no relation to President U.S. Grant, was one of the leading officers from Vermont in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War, and was awared the Medal of Honor in 1893 for his actions in an assault in Virginia in 1863. Mr. Grant served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of War in the administration of President Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893).

Frank O. Lowden, 82
. U.S. politician. Mr. Lowden, a Republican, represented Illinois' 13th District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1906-1911 and was Governor of Illinois from 1917-1921, winning national attention for his handling of the Chicago race riot of 1919. He unsuccessfully campaigned for the Republican Party U.S. presidential nomination in 1920 and 1928.

Sayed Sibghatullah Shah. Indian terrorist. Mr. Shah, leader of the Muslim Hur sect in Sind Province, was executed in Hyderabad for pillaging, wrecking trains, and other terrorist acts.

War
A British destroyer was commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy at Halifax as HMCS Griffin; three weeks later it was renamed HMCS Ottawa, the second ship of that name. After four days of assaults, Germany reported sinking 32 Allied ships in a convoy across the North Atlantic Ocean. In their success on the Kharkov front, Germany claimed 50,000 Russians killed and 19,594 taken prisoner. With the aid of air cover, Chinese forces repulsed Japanese counterattacks in the Hupeh-Hunan area of China.

Abominations
The Polish government-in-exile in London reported that the Germans had killed 35,000 Jews in Radomsko, Radzymin, Sobolew, Szczerzec, and Ujazd.

Track and field
U.S. Navy Ensign Cornelius Warmerdam pole vaulted 15' 8 1/2" at the Chicago Relays, beating his own world record of 15' 7 3/4".

Politics and government
Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, director of the Jewish Agency's U.S. office, attacked the "shocking reversal" in American policy in Palestine announced the previous day. Jewish Agency Chairman David Ben-Gurion rejected "any sort of trusteeship, permanent or temporary." U.S. Secretary of State George Marshall disclosed that he had originated the U.S. shift in Palestine policy, recommending trusteeship to President Harry Truman as the best way to preserve peace in the area.

The U.S.A., U.K., and France jointly proposed abandoning United Nations trusteeship of Trieste and returning the city to Italian control. The statement cited difficulties in choosing a governor for the international zone and frequent clashes between Yugoslavian and Allied troops as reason for the change.

The U.S.S.R. Communist Party Central Committee sent a secret message to the Yugoslavian Communist Party, accusing it of deviating from the "internationalist" line laid down for European Communists in Moscow, and attempting to follow a separate path of economic and political development for Yugoslavia.

Disasters
A tornado struck Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, causing $10 million in damage to planes, and leading to the first successful tornado forecast five days later.

Tennis
Bill Talbert won the men's singles title at the U.S. indoor championships in New York, while Pat Todd won the women's singles title.

. Nigerian politician. Mr. Adelabu, a member of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons, was a radical socialist and nationalist who served as Nigeria's Minister of Natural Resources and Social Services form 1955-1956 and opposition leader of the Western House of Assembly from 1956 until his death in a car accident.

World events
U.S., U.K., and Dutch nationals left Medan in northern Sumatra for Singapore.

Politics and government
The Sudanese House of Representatives voted to retain Prime Minister Abdullah Khalil as head of a new coalition cabinet.

The Ulster Unionist Party, led by Basil Brooke, retained its pro-British majority in the Northern Ireland House of Commons, winning 37 of 52 seats in the general election. The Nationalist Party, led by Joe Stewart, won 7 seats, and the Northern Ireland Labour Party, led by Tom Boyd, won 4 seats, their first seats since being wiped out in the 1949 election.

A Gallup Poll reported that U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower's public approval was down to 52%, "the lowest point ever recorded since he took office" on January 20, 1953.

Charles Chaplin, Jr., 42. U.S. actor. Mr. Chaplin, the son of Charlie Chaplin and Lita Grey, died of a pulmonary embolism. His movie appearances included Limelight (with his father) (1952); The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell (1955); High School Confidential! (1958); The Beat Generation (1959); Girls Town (1959); and Sex Kittens Go to College (1960).

Jacques "Toto" Brugnon, 82
. French tennis player. Mr. Brugnon was one of the "Four Musketeers" from France who dominated tennis in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He was primarily a doubles specialist who won 10 Grand Slam doubles titles in the French, American, Australian and British championships. He was also a fine singles player but never won a major title. Along with the other Musketeers (Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet, and René Lacoste), Mr. Brugnon was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1976.

Politics and government
French Socialist leader Francois Mitterand blamed the Communists for the left’s defeat in the national elections the day before; the Communists had repeatedly attacked the Socialists during the campaign.

Law
The Florida State Supreme Court ruled that acknowledgment of homosexual preference was not in itself grounds to deny a qualified applicant the right to practice law in the state.

Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze arrived in Washington to meet with U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz in order to work out details of a summit between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to take place in Moscow from May 29-June 2.

Politics and government
President Jose Napoleon Duarte’s centrist Christian Democratic Party lost ground in elections in El Salvador. The right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) won about half the seats in the National Assembly. ARENA had called for a more vigorous war against leftist rebels and had criticized the Duarte government for corruption and various economic problems. The rebels called for a boycott of the vote. ARENA won in about 80% of the municipalities--including San Salvador--that voted. A preliminary report from the ruling party said that ARENA had won 31 of the 60 seats in the assembly.

In the contest for the 1988 U.S. presidential nominations, Jesse Jackson won the Democratic preference vote in Puerto Rico; Vice President George Bush won the Republican vote.

Disasters
A fire that began in the kitchen of a private home in Lashio, Burma killed 113 people and destroyed 2,000 homes.

A U.S. Grayling attack submarine and a Russian Delta-class submarine, normally equipped with 16 ocean-spanning nuclear-tipped missiles, collided in the Arctic Ocean.

Terrorism
Jonathan Ball, 3, and Tim Parry, 12, were fatally injured, and 56 others were injured when two bombs exploded near a shopping centre in Warrington, Cheshire, England. The Provisional Irish Republican Army was resonsible for the atrocity.
