Politics and government
Golda Meir resigned as Prime Minister of Israel, bringing down her one-month coalition government. Deep divisions within her Labour Party had come to a head over the April 2 report of an official commission investigating the Yom Kippur war against Egypt and Syria in October 1973, which had blamed Israel's lack of preparedness on the military command and not the government. There was a deadlock within the Labour Party over whether Moshe Dayan should resign as Defense Minister because of setbacks in the early stages of the war, and the deadlock prompted Mrs. Meir to resign. She was succeeded by Shimon Peres.
