. U.K. politician. Mr. Walpole, a Whig and the son of Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole, represented several ridings in the House of Commons from 1741-1768, and wrote the first gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764). He died on March 2, 1797 at the age of 79.

Adélard Godbout
. Canadian politician. Mr. Godbout, a Liberal, represented L'Islet in the Quebec Legislative Assembly from 1929-1936 and 1939-1948. He led the Quebec Liberal Party from 1936-1950, and served as Premier of Quebec from June 11-August 28, 1936 and from 1939-1944. Mr. Godbout was Premier during most of World War II, and opposed the federal Liberal government's policy of conscription of men to serve in the armed forces. Mr. Godbout represented Montarville, Quebec in the Canadian Senate from 1949 until his death on September 18, 1956, six days before his 64th birthday.

Wally Post hit a home run in each game to help the Cincinnati Reds sweep a doubleheader from the Chicago Cubs 4-3 and 11-9 before 5,200 fans at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Gordon Massa made his major league debut behind the plate for the Cubs in the first game, batting 2 for 4 with a run batted in, and making 3 putouts and allowing a passed ball. Frank Sullivan pitched a 5-hit complete game victory to improve his 1957 record to 14-11 and scored the game's first run in the 3rd inning when he singled and Jimmy Piersall followed with a triple. Mr. Williams' homer followed his first plate appearance, when he grounded out in the 1st inning, ending a major league record of reaching base in 16 consecutive plate appearances. Losing pitcher Hal Griggs allowed just 6 hits and 2 earned runs in 8 innings to fall to 0-1.

Ron Jackson batted 4 for 5 with a double, run, and 2 runs batted in to help the Chicago White Sox edge the Kansas City Athletics 7-6 before 3,886 fans at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City. Chicago catcher Earl Battey was 3 for 4 with a home run, triple, 2 runs, and 2 RBIs, and third baseman Bubba Phillips added 2 doubles. The Athletics mounted a rally with none out in the 9th inning when Hector Lopez singled and pinch hitte Bob Cerv followed with a 2-run homer. The Blue Bombers turned 3 turnovers into touchdowns as they beat the Rough Riders before 23,211 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Ottawa amassed 454 yards in net offense, but the turnovers and 107 yards in penalties hurt the Ottawa cause. It was the final regular season CFL game for Ottawa linebacker Larry Cameron, who later went on to a successful career as a professional wrestler.

The Eskimos reduced a 20-3 deficit to 20-13 in the 4th quarter, and Edmonton quarterback Bruce Lemmerman completed a second-down pass to John Konihowski to the B.C. 6-yard line, but the play was called back on a holding penalty. Two plays later, Dave Cutler was wide on a field goal attempt, and Ken Hinton returned it 130 yards for a touchdown on the longest one-man play in CFL history. Lui Passaglia converted and added a field goal to ensure victory for the Lions before fans at Empire Stadium in Vancouver. Leon Bright scored another B.C. touchdown on a 78-yard pass from Jerry Tagge. It was the first Canadian Football League game for Edmonton wide receiver Waddell Smith and defensive back Gregg Butler.

Dave Winfield of the Toronto Blue Jays became the first 40-year-old in major league history to bat in 100 runs in a season when he hit a 2-run double off losing pitcher Ben McDonald in the Blue Jays' 8-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles before 45,739 fans at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Mr. Winfield's double climaxed a 5-run 2nd inning; he opened the scoring with a 2-run home run in the 1st inning.

Bernie Williams batted 3 for 4 with a triple, 3 runs, and a run batted in, and Gerald Williams hit his first major league home run to help the New York Yankees defeat the Detroit Tigers 10-1 before 12,415 fans at Yankee Stadium. Scott Kamieniecki allowed 6 hits and 1 earned run in 8 innings to improve his 1992 record to 6-12.

Pinch hitter Brian Jordan singled home Darren Daulton with 2 out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs before 12,963 fans at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. The winning hit came after Dave Hollins had charged the mound after being hit by a pitch from Bob Scanlan, leading to a 10-minute brawl resulting in the ejections of Messrs. Todd Zeile singled home Chucky Carr with 1 out in the bottom of the 14th inning to score Ozzie Smith with the winning run, climaxing a 4-run rally as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the New York Mets 4-3 before 16,359 fans at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis. The Mets broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the 13th on a 3-run home run by Jeff Kent off Bryn Smith, who ended up as the winning pitcher.

Jeff Brantley and 2 relief pitchers combined for a 3-hitter as the San Francisco Giants shut out the Atlanta Braves 4-0 before 12,573 fans at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Mr. Brantley allowed 2 hits in 5 1/3 innings to improve his 1992 record to 6-7, winning the pitching matchup with Tom Glavine, who allowed 6 hits and 4 runs--3 earned--in 6 innings to fall to 20-7.

The Toronto Blue Jays fired manager Cito Gaston with 5 games remaining in the season. Mr. Gaston had been the Blue Jays' manager since 1989 and had led them to World Series championships in 1992 and 1993 and American League East Division pennants in 1989 and 1991. The Blue Jays were 72-85 in 1997, fifth and last in the AL East. Mr. Gaston was replaced as manager by pitching coach Mel Queen.
