Died on this date
Tewoflos. Emperor of Ethiopia, 1708-1711. Tewoflos, one of four sons of Emperor Fasilides and the brother of Emperor Iyasu I, was brought out of captivity to succeed his nephew Tekle Haymanot I. Tewoflos accused his late nephew of regicide and patricide, and moved against all regicides and those who had taken part in the assassination plot against Iyasu I. Emperor Tewoflos died under suspicious circumstances, and was succeeded by Yostos.

Joseph Plateau. Belgian physicist and mathematician. Dr. Plateau was best known for his 1832 invention of the Phenakistoscope, the first device to give the illusion of a moving image. He taught at the University of Ghent for many years, and died on September 15, 1883, 29 days before his 82nd birthday.

Born on this date
Alexander von Zemlinsky. Austrian composer, conductor, and teacher. Mr. Zemlinsky was a pianist and organist, and brother-in-law of composer Arnold Schoenberg. Mr. Zemlinsky wrote two symphonies, as well as chamber and piano works, and numerous choral works. He's perhaps best known for his Lyric Symphony (1923), a seven-movement piece for soprano, baritone and orchestra, set to poems by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (in German translation). Mr. Zemlinsky was conductor of the Deutsches Landestheater in Prague (1911-1927) and then worked in Berlin under Otto Klemperer, but fled Germany when the Nazis took power in 1933. He went to New York and then ended up teaching at two universities in California, dying on March 15, 1942 at the age of 70 after a series of strokes.

Sarah Winnemucca, 47 (?) . U.S. author. Miss Winnemucca, whose Paiute name was Thocmetony (Shell Flower), was the daughter of Northern Paiute Chief Winnemucca and the first American Indian woman to secure a copyright and to publish in the English language, for her book Life Among the Piutes: Their Wrongs and Claims. She died after a long battle with tuberculosis.

Larry Corcoran, 32. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Corcoran has been credited with being the first pitcher to work out a series of signals with his catcher. Pitching for the Chicago White Stockings in the National League, he posted a record of 170-84 from 1880-1884, peaking with a 27-12 record in 1884. He died of drink and Bright's disease.

Born on this date
Lê Đức Thọ. Vietnamese military officer and politician. General Tho was head of the Central Organizing Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam from 1956-1973 and 1976-1982. He and Henry Kissinger of the United States were jointly awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize "for the 1973 Paris agreement intended to bring about a cease-fire in the Vietnam war and a withdrawal of the American forces," but Gen. Tho declined the honour. He died on October 13, 1990, the day before his 79th birthday.

John Marshall Harlan, 78. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1877-1911. Justice Harlan was a member of various political parties who fought for the Union Army in the Civil War and served as Attorney General of Kentucky (1863-1867), and joined the Republican party after the war. He was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Rutherford B. Hayes, and became known as "The Great Dissenter" for the number of dissenting opinions he wrote, particularly in cases involving civil liberties, such as Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), in which he argued against the majority opinion upholding the practice of "separate but equal" access to public services for white people and Negroes.

Keenan Wynn, 70. U.S. actor. Mr. Wynn, the son of comedian Ed Wynn, was a character actor who appeared in numerous television programs and movies; he and his father appeared together in the Playhouse 90 television drama Requiem for a Heavyweight (1956). Keenan Wynn died of pancreatic cancer.
