Marie-Marguerite d'Youville
. Canadian nun. Mrs. d'Youville, a native of Varennes, Quebec, was a widow who suffered the death of her husband and four of her six children before the age of 30, but experienced a religious revival, and in 1737 with three other women founded an association that ministered to the poor in Montreal. The association became the Roman Catholic order The Sisters of Charity of Montreal--popularly known as the Grey Nuns--in 1744, and was granted an order in 1747 to operate Montreal General Hospital. Mrs. d'Youville died in Montreal on December 23, 1771 at the age of 70, and was canonized in 1990 by Pope John Paul II.

. U.K.-born U.S. author. Sir Pelham Grenville wrote novels, plays, and songs. He was best known for his humourous stories about a rich man named Bertie Wooster and his valet Jeeves. Sir P.G. died on February 14, 1975 at the age of 93, several weeks after being knighted.

Enrique Jardiel Poncela
. Spanish writer. Mr. Poncela wrote about 50 plays, about 40 novels and novellas, and about 25 screenplays in a career spanning more than 30 years. His works used the theatre of the absurd, and attracted much criticism in his own time. Mr. Poncela died of cancer, bankrupt and almost forgotten, on February 18, 1952 at the age of 50, but his works are more highly regarded today.

. Canadian student. Mr. Madill, an Arts and Agriculture student at the University of Alberta, was hunting partridge 12 miles west of Edmonton when he slipped while crossing a log; the hammer of his gun struck another log, causing the gun to discharge, killing Mr. Madill.

. U.S. actor. Mr. de Kova was a character actor on stage, screen, and television in a career spanning 30 years. He was best known for playing Chief Wild Eagle in the television comedy series F Troop (1965-1967). Mr. de Kova died of heart failure in his sleep.

Each team scored a run in the 14th, with the Astros' run coming on a home run by Billy Hatcher. The Mets scored 3 in the top of the 16th, and the Astros scored 2 in the bottom of the inning and had runners on first and second bases when winning pitcher Jesse Orosco (3-0) struck out Kevin Bass to end the game before an Astrodome crowd of 45,718 after 4 hours and 42 minutes. Aurelio Lopez (0-1) took the loss.



American League Championship Series
California 1 @ Boston 8 (Boston won best-of-seven series 4-3)

The Red Sox scored 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning and got a 3-run home run from Jim Rice in the 4th as 33,001 fans at Fenway Park saw the Red Sox win their first AL pennant in 11 years. Roger Clemens (1-1) was the winning pitcher over John Candelaria (1-1).

Jamie Moyer (2-0) pitched 6 innings to get the win, while Cleveland starter Chuck Finley (0-2) took the loss.



Oakland 3 @ New York 5 (New York won best-of-five series 3-2)

The Athletics scored single runs in each of the first 2 innings, but the Yankees came back with 2 in the bottom of the 2nd and single runs in each of the 3rd and 4th innings, and were able to maintain their lead before 56,642 fans at Yankee Stadium. Mike Stanton (1-0) was the winning pitcher, while Mark Mulder (1-1) took the loss.
