Died on this date
Ioannis Kapodistrias, 55. Governor of Hellenic State, 1828-1831. Count Kapodistrias, a native of Corfu, was a physician who served as Minister of State in the Septinsular Republic (1800-1807). After the Republic was dissolved, he served as Russia's unofficial ambassador to Switzerland in 1813, and then as Russian Foreign Minister (1816-1822). He opposed the foreign policy of Austrian Foreign Minister Prince Metternich, Europe's most powerful statesman at the time. Count Kapodistrias supported Greek independence, but resigned as Foreign Minister after failing to obtain Czar Aleksandr I's support for the Greek revolution of 1821. In 1827, the Greek National Asssembly elected Count Kapodistrias as the country's head of state, with the title of Governor. He took office in January 1828 and initiated political, economic, and social reforms, but believed that the Greek people were not ready for democracy, and needed an enlightened autorcracy for a generation or two before democracy could be established. By 1831, Count Kapodistrias' government was hated by various factions, and he ordered the imprisonment of Petrobey Mavromichalis, Bey of the Mani Peninsula and leader of the successful uprising against the Ottoman Empire. Petrobey's brother Konstantis and son Georgios shot and stabbed Count Kapodistrias on the steps of the church of Saint Spyridon in Nafplion. Count Kapodistrias was succeeded as Governor by his younger brother Augustinos.

Jack Daniel, 62 (?). U.S. distiller. Mr. Daniel founded Jack Daniel's whiskey distillery in Tennessee in 1875. He turned the business over to his nephews in 1907, and died of blood poisoning.

An accidental bomb explosion triggered the Wuchang Uprising against the Chinese monarchy as provisional commander Wu Zhaolin led the revolutionary elements of the New Army in a mutiny against the Qing garrison in Huguang, capturing the residence of the Viceroy in the process along with securing strategic points in the city after intense fighting.

Charles Lorenzo Clarke, 88. U.S. engineer. Mr. Clarke was the oldest surviving associate of Thomas Edison and the original chief engineer of Edison Electric Light Company.

Helen Morgan, 41. U.S. singer. Miss Morgan, born Helen Riggin, was perhaps the most famous torch singer of the 1920s and '30s, in nightclubs and on the Broadway stage. She was a heavy drinker for much of her life, and died of cirrhosis of the liver.

German Reich Press Chief Otto Dietrich declared that the war in the East was essentially over, declaring, "For all military purposes, Soviet Russia is done with."

Ricardo Adolfo de la Guardia was elected President of Panama by the cabinet following the disclosure that President Arnulfo Arias had fled by plane to Cuba on October 7 after his government had barred the arming of U.S. merchant ships under Panamanian registry.

Roosevelt urged Congess to repeal Section 6 of the 1939 Neutrality Act, which prohibited arming American-flag ships engaged in foreign commerce, and to modify the provision barring U.S. vessels from war zones. Turkish Foreign Minister Shukru Saracoglu and German Ambassador Franz von Papen signed a trade pact in Ankara providing for chromium ore shipments to Germany.

The Edmonton Eskimos, who had dropped out of the Western Interprovincial Football Union just before the end of the 1939 season but had been reorganized in 1941, disbanded again after a plan for a playoff game against the first-place or second-place team in the WIFU fell through. The Eskimos had been reorganized too late to participate in the WIFU season, but, as representatives of the Alberta Rugby Union, had attempted to schedule a playoff game at Edmonton's Clarke Stadium against the team finishing first or second in the WIFU. The WIFU wanted a guarantee of $1,200 from the Eskimos for the game, but the Eskimos were unable to meet that condition, and the team disbanded, not to be reorganized and take the field again until 1949.

The Yankees led 6-0 until Frank Robinson hit a 3-run homer for the Reds in the bottom of the 3rd. Wally Post added a 2-run homer for the Reds in the bottom of the 5th to reduce the Yankees' lead to 11-5, but the Reds were unable to score any more runs. Bud Daley (1-0), who relieved starter Ralph Terry in the 3rd, was the winning pitcher, while Joey Jay (1-1), who lasted just 1/3 inning, took the loss. 32,589 fans attended the last World Series game ever played at Crosley Field.

Died on this date
Jo-Jo White, 77. U.S. baseball player. Joyner White played center field with the Detroit Tigers (1932-1938); Philadelphia Athletics (1943-1944); and Cincinnati Reds (1944), batting .256 with 8 home runs and 232 runs batted in in 878 games. His best season was 1934, when he hit .313 in helping the Tigers win the American League pennant. Mr. White's batting average dropped to .240 in 1935, but he was still a regular as the Tigers won the World Series. Mr. White played in the Pacific Coast League from 1939-1942 and again after his major league career ended, leading the league with a .355 batting average while playing with the Sacramento Solons in 1945.

He died of heart failure.
