Matthijs Quast
. Dutch explorer. Mr. Quast led expeditions to Japan, China, and Siam on behalf of the United East India Company (VOC), and was chosen to lead an expedition to find two islands east of Japan that were reported to be rich in gold and silver. Mr. Quast left Batavia on June 2, 1639 and reached the open ocean on June 10. He abandoned the expedition on October 25, with ships and crew in poor condition. By the time the expedition reached Fort Zeelandia on the island of Formosa on November 24, 41 of his 90 men had died.

Charles Stewart Parnell, 45
. U.K. politician. Mr. Parnell was an Irish nationalist who transformed the Home Rule League into the Irish Parliamentary Party, which he led from 1882 until his death. He represented Meath in the House of Commons from 1875-1880 and Cork City from 1880 until his death. Mr. Parnell was regarded as one of the most brilliant politicians of his time, but revelations of a lengthy adulterous affair created in a major scandal, resulting in a splintering of the Irish Parliamentary Party into several factions. Mr. Parnell's health broke, and he died of pneumonia.

The Baltimore Orioles swept a doubleheader from the Washington Statesmen 14-3 and 15-11 at Boundary Field in Washington in what turned out to be the last 2 games played in the 10-year history of the American Association major league. The Orioles, Statesmen, Louisville Colonels, and St. Louis Browns were admitted to the National League after the season, and the owners of the remaining AA franchises were bought out.

. Canadian-born U.S. baseball player. Mr. Murphy, a native of Toronto, was an outfielder with the Washington Statesmen (1891), batting .265 with 1 home run and 35 runs batted in in 101 games. He played 5 seasons in the minor leagues (1888-1892).

The Boston Rustlers split a doubleheader with the Brooklyn Superbas before 2,500 fans at Washington Park in Brooklyn, winning the first game 1-0 and losing the second game 13-3. In the first game, Ed Donnelly (3-2) pitched a 6-hit shutout to win the pitchers' duel over Pat Ragan (3-3), who allowed 7 hits and 1 earned run in 8 innings. Walt Miller relieved Mr. Ragan for the 9th inning and allowed 1 hit and no runs, walking 1 batter and striking out 1 in his third and last major league game. In the second game, Cy Young (4-5) started on the mound for the Rustlers, playing in the 906th and final game of his 22-year Hall of Fame major league career. He gave up 11 hits and 11 runs in 6.1 innings, and the last 8 batters hit safely against him as the Superbas scored 8 runs in the 7th inning. Eddie Dent (1-1) was the winning pitcher.

Ernie "Tiny" Bonham pitched a 4-hitter to win the pitching duel over Whit Wyatt before 34,072 fans at Ebbets Field, and Tommy Henrich hit a home run for the Yankees. New York leadoff hitter and first baseman Johnny Sturm batted 1 for 4, getting a hit in every game of the series and finishing with an average of .286. He had batted .239 during the season, playing the final 124 games of the regular season at first base. Oddly, 1941 turned out to be Mr. Sturm's only season in the major leagues; he served in the military during World War II, and was unable to make it back to the major leagues after the war.

W.K. Kellogg, 91
. U.S. food magnate. Will Keith Kellogg and his brother Dr. John Harvey Kellogg were Seventh-day Adventists who incorporated Adventist doctrines into their businesses. J.H. Kellogg founded the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan, and created corn flakes as a breakfast food. W.K. helped his brother, but disagreed with his refusal to market his ideas. When C.W. Post used Dr. Kellogg's ideas as the basis for his own company, W.K. Kellogg left the sanitarium and founded the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company--now the Kellogg Company--in 1906. Mr. Kellogg was a philanthropist and horse breeder until his death from heart failure.

Otto Fritz Meyerhof, 67. German-born physician and biochemist. Dr. Meyerhof was awarded a share of the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for his discovery of the fixed relationship between the consumption of oxygen and the metabolism of lactic acid in the muscle." He fled Germany for Paris in 1938 and arrived in the United States in 1940, and was given a guest professorship at the University of Pennsylvania.

Henry Gurney, 53. U.K. bureaucrat and diplomat. Sir Henry was a colonial administrator with posts in places such as Kenya (1921-1935); Jamaica; Gold Coast (1944-1946); and Palestine (1946-1948). He was appointed High Commissioner to Malaya on October 1, 1948, and was still in office when he was assasssinated by members of the Malayan Communist Party in a highway ambush while on his way to the Fraser's Hill resort for a meeting. Sir Henry's Malayan chauffeur was also killed, and five policemen wounded. According to Communist leader Chin Peng, the ambush was routine, and the killing was by chance. Sir Henry was succeeded as High Commissioner by Field Marshal Sir Gerald Walter Robert Templer.

Politics and government
The Indian Parliament completed action on a controversial bill giving the state power to curb publications that encouraged the overthrow of the government, communal strife, crime and sabotage, blackmail, and other illegal acts.

Terrorism
Colombia's Conservative and Liberal Parties agreed in a conference to try to eliminate violence by political "bandit" gangs. A state of siege in effect since 1949 would continue until terrorism was stamped out.

Anwar Sadat, 62
. President of Egypt, 1970-1981; Vice President of Egypt, 1964, 1969-1970; Prime Minister of Egypt, 1973-1974, 1980-1981. Colonel Sadat served in the Egyptian Army from 1938-1952, and participated in the military revolution that overthrew King Farouk in 1952. He held various offices, including Speaker of the National Assembly (1960-1969). Mr. Sadat acceded to the presidency after the death of Gamal Nasser, and made some changes, including allowing more than one political party. Mr. Sadat and Syrian President Hafez al-Assad of Syria initiated the Yom Kippur War against Israel in October 1973; in March 1979, Mr. Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin signed the Egyptian–Israeli Peace Treaty, several months after the Camp David Accords, earning Messrs. Sadat and Begin the Nobel Peace Prize. Although Mr. Sadat was highly regarded internationally as a statesman, he was unpopular with Islamic elements at home. Mr. Sadat and 11 others were shot to death by a squad led by Lieutenant Khalid Islambouli during the annual parade celebrating the anniversary of the 1973 crossing of the Suez Canal by Egyptian forces. Vice President Hosni Mubarak, one of 28 people wounded in the attack, succeeded Mr. Sadat as President.

The day after The Sunday Times published Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu's expose of Israel's nuclear weapons program, Mr. Vanunu disappeared in London. It was later confirmed that he had been kidnapped by the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad and taken back to Israel, where he was convicted of treason and spent 18 years in prison.

Baseball
The Baltimore Orioles announced that veteran third base coach Cal Ripken, Sr. would be the team's manager in 1987, replacing the retiring Earl Weaver. The Orioles had finished seventh and last in the American League East Division in 1986 with a record of 73-89, losing 42 of their last 56 games to finish 22½ games behind the first-place Boston Red Sox.

Igor Talkov, 34
. U.S.S.R. musician. Mr. Talkov was a rock singer-songwriter who played various instruments and sang love songs, but also sang songs critical of the Soviet regime; his breakthrough hit was Chistye prudy (1987). Mr. Talkov was in Leningrad to perform a concert when he was fatally shot, 29 days before his 35th birthday. His former manager Valeriy Schlyafman was the prime suspect; he fled through Ukraine to Israel, proclaiming his innocence and claiming the murder was the work of the Soviet secret police KGB, while Israel refused to extradite him.

David Cone (14-14) struck out 19 batters and allowed just 3 hits as he pitched the New York Mets to a 7-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies before 29,676 fans at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.

John Smiley (20-8) allowed 5 hits and no runs in 7 innings to get the win as the Pittsburgh Pirates shut out the Montreal Expos 7-0 before 23,429 fans at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.

Kevin Maas hit 2 home runs and Mel Hall added another to help the New York Yankees defeat the Cleveland Indians 7-4 before 17,863 fans at Yankee Stadium.

In a preview of the American League Championship Series, Rob Ducey led off the 10th inning with a home run to break a 2-2 tie and give the Toronto Blue Jays a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins before 37,794 fans at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Gary Gaetti's 3-run home run in the 5th inning provided all the scoring necessary as the California Angels defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-1 before 27,588 fans at Anaheim Stadium. Winning pitcher Mark Langston (19-8) allowed 5 hits and 1 earned run in 7.2 innings to finish the season with a record of 19-8.

Miguel del Toro, 29
. Mexican baseball pitcher. Mr. del Toro played with the San Francisco Giants (1999-2000), compiling a 2-0 record with an earned run average of 4.61 in 23 games. He was 12-13 with a 4.91 ERA in 3 seasons in the minor leagues (1992, 1999-2000), but spent most of his career in the Mexican League (1993-1998), mostly with the Mexico City Red Devils. Mr. del Toro spent the 2001 season with the Seibu Lions of the Japanese Pacific League, posting a 1-1 record with a 5.59 ERA in 14 games. He was killed in Mexico in a car accident that also killed his two travelling companions.

Lenny Harris singled as a pinch hitter for the Mets in the 6th inning; it was his 151st career major league pinch hit, breaking the record formerly held by Manny Mota.

Bret Boone's home run with 2 out in the bottom of the 1st inning was the only scoring as the Seattle Mariners edged the Texas Rangers 1-0 before 45,607 fans at Safeco Field in Seattle for their 116th win of the season, tying the total of the 1906 Chicago Cubs. Five Seattle pitchers combined to pitch a 2-hit shutout, with the third pitcher, Joel Pineiro (6-2), who pitched 2 perfect innings, getting the win. Losing pitcher Doug Davis (11-10) allowed just 4 hits in a complete game.
