Osgoode Hall scored 8 tries (touchdowns) as they routed the Montreal Football Club before 2,000 fans on a wet field to win the first national championship to be played under the auspices of the Canadian Rugby Union. Mr. Peterson scored 2 touchdowns and a single for Osgoode Hall, with other tries coming from Harry Senkler, Mr. Blake, Mr. Pope, Mr. Kerr, Mr. Morin, and Casey Wood. Mr. Senkler kicked a field goal--then worth 5 points--and added a single. Mr. Miller kicked a field goal in the 1st quarter for Montreal. Osgoode Hall led 26-5 at halftime.

Nathaniel Grace. Indian-born Canadian chemist. Dr. Grace, the son of missionary parents, grew up in California and Saskatchewan, and received his doctorate from McGill University in 1931. He worked at the National Research Council (1931-1951), and in 1951 was appointed as the first full-time director of the Alberta Research Council. Under Dr. Grace's leadership, the ARC initiated important new areas of activity, notably groundwater and hailstorm research. He died in Rochester, Alberta on November 13, 1961, three days after his 59th birthday.

Don Clark rushed 10 yards for a touchdown in the 4th quarter and Bobby-Jack Oliver kicked the convert to give the Alouettes their win over the Rough Riders before 20,252 fans at Lansdowne Park. All the scoring was done with a favouring 25-mile-per-hour wind; the Alouettes scored 10 points in the 1st quarter and 8 in the 4th, while the Rough Riders scored 11 points in the 2nd quarter and 6 in the 3rd. 12 hours of steady rain had turned the field into a quagmire, forcing both teams to rely on their ground attacks. Mr. Clark gained 100 yards on 17 carries, while backfield mate Larry Hickman rushed 15 times for 105. Ottawa's Dave Thelen rushed 24 times for 188 yards. Mr. Oliver opened the scoring with a 15-yard field goal after blocking a Jim Conroy punt, which was recovered by Montreal's Dick Schnell. Ted Elsby recovered a fumble by Mr. Thelen, setting up Mr. Hickman's 1-yard TD run. Moe Racine then kicked a 14-yard field goal and converted Mr. Thelen's 52-yard touchdown run, and Mr. Conroy punted for a single to give the Rough Riders an 11-10 halftime lead. They made it 17-10 when quarterback Russ Jackson completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Mr. Thelen. However, Mr. Jackson fumbled the snap on the convert attempt, and Mr. Racine was unable to get the kick away. Vic Chapman of the Alouettes punted for a single early in the 4th quarter to reduce Ottawa's lead to 17-11 before Mr. Clark scored his TD and Mr. Oliver kicked the eventual winning point. Mr. Jackson passed just 4 times, completing 3, while Montreal quarterback Sandy Stephens threw just 3 passes, none of which were completed. Ottawa defensive tackle Gilles Archambault suffered torn knee ligaments on the second play of the game. It was the final game of the 14-year Canadian Football Hall of Fame career of Ottawa offensive end Bob Simpson, and the final game that counted for quarterback Ron Lancaster in a Rough Rider uniform. It was also the last game for Ottawa halfback Millard Flemming; he fumbled the opening kickoff and Montreal's Billy Ray Locklin recovered, but Mr. Stephens was unable to hold the snap on Mr. Oliver's field goal attempt and the ball was turned over to the Rough Riders. Another individual reaching the end of the line with this game was Ottawa general manager George Terlep, who was soon fired and replaced by Red O'Quinn.

Eagle Day completed 17 of 30 passes for 257 yards and a touchdown and the Calgary defense threw Saskatchewan quarterback Bob Ptacek for 53 yards in losses as the Stampeders blanked the Roughriders before 17,780 fans at McMahon Stadium. Earl Lunsford rushed 4 yards for a touchdown in the 1st quarter; Jim Dillard rushed 1 yard for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter; and Mr. Day connected with Larry Robinson for a 35-yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Mr. Robinson converted the first 2 touchdowns and added a field goal and 2 singles. The Stampeder defense was so dominant that they limited the Roughriders to 32 yards of net offense. Mr. Ptacek completed 5 of 17 passes for 47 yards. The score could have been worse if not for a goal-line stand by Saskatchewan early in the game; with the Stampeders facing third down and goal-to-go on the Roughriders' 2-yard line, they wanted to kick a field goal, but Mr. Robinson had left the field, and when the officials wouldn't permit him to re-enter the game, backup quarterback Jerry Keeling threw an incomplete pass. Mr. Lunsford led all rushers with 54 yards, while Mr. Dillard led all receivers with 94 yards on 6 receptions.

Arthur B. “Mickey” McBride, 84. U.S. football executive. Mr. McBride was the founder of the Cleveland Browns of the All-America Football Conference, and owned the team through their years in the AAFC and their early years in the National Football League, which they joined when the leagues merged in 1950. Mr. McBride sold the Browns in the summer of 1953.

Leonid Brezhnev, 75. U.S.S.R. politician. Mr. Brezhnev was General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union--the U.S.S.R.'s highest official--from 1964 until his death.

Crime
Geoffrey Prime, an employee of Great Britain’s principal electronic intelligence agency, pled guilty to 7 counts of spying for the U.S.S.R. and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Mr. Prime was a Russian translator employed at a key centre of electronic eavesdropping activities, and was in position to know the targets of British and U.S. surveillance and which Soviet codes had been broken. The prosecutor, U.K. Attorney General Sir Michael Havers, said that Mr. Prime, who had first been approached by the Soviets in 1968 while he was with the Royal Air Force, had done “exceptionally grave damage.”

Jackie Vernon, 63. U.S. comedian. Mr. Vernon was known for his deadpan delivery and self-deprecating manner. He's probaby best known as the voice of the title character in the television cartoon Frosty the Snowman (1969).

Chuck Connors, 71. U.S. baseball player and actor. Mr. Connors was a first baseman who spent most of his career in the minor leagues, playing 1 game with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949 and 66 games with the Chicago Cubs in 1951, compiling a .238 average with 2 home runs and 18 runs batted in. He broke into acting while playing for the Hollywood Stars of the Pacific Coast League. Mr. Connors was best known as the star of the television series The Rifleman (1958-1963).

Michel Boisrond, 81. French film director and screenwriter. Mr. Boisrand began his career as an assistant director in the late 1940s, and in 1956 began directing films, many of which he wrote. He directed almost 30 movies--mainly comedies and romances--and about as many television programs through the mid-1990s. Mr. Boisrond's films included Cette sacrée gamine (Naughty Girl) (1956); La Parisienne (1957); and Faibles femmes (Women are Weak) (1959).

Diplomacy
Arab League foreign ministers, meeting in Beirut, supported United Nations inspection of Iraq’s weapons sites, but opposed a U.S.-led invasion if Iraq did not co-operate.

Terrorism
A Palestinian gunman killed five people, including two children, in an attack on a kibbutz in Israel. The Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigade, the militant arm of Yasser Arafat’s Fatah movement, claimed responsibility. Israel responded with an army raid on Gaza and the reoccupation of Nablus.

Disasters
Dozens of tornadoes swept through the central United States, killing more than 35 people and causing widespread destruction. 17 were killed in Tennessee, 12 in Alabama, and 5 in Ohio.

Bashir Levingston’s 76-yard punt return for a touchdown with 42 seconds remaining until halftime was the turning point as the Argonauts overcame a 12-0 deficit to defeat the Roughriders before 23,124 fans at SkyDome. Saskatchewan led 3-0 after the 1st quarter on a 32-yard field goal by Paul McCallum. Nealon Greene completed a 42-yard touchdown pass to Derick Armstrong with 6:31 remaining in the 2nd quarter, and Mr. McCallum’s convert made the score 10-0. It became 12-0 when Shonte Peoples sacked Argonaut quarterback Reggie Slack in the Toronto end zone for a safety touch with 1:50 left in the 2nd quarter. The Argonauts took a 14-12 lead in the 3rd quarter when Robert Drummond rushed 1 yard for a touchdown and Noel Prefontaine kicked his second convert. Mr. Prefontaine kicked a 17-yard field goal at 1:26 of the 4th quarter and Mr. Slack put the game away when he rushed 7 yards for a TD, converted by Mr. Prefontaine, with 4:36 remaining. Toronto receiver Mookie Mitchell conceded a safety touch on the last play of the game.



Charles Roberts rushed 16 times for 169 yards and a touchdown as the Blue Bombers routed the Lions before 22,508 fans at Canad Inns Stadium. Winnipeg took an early lead on a 15-yard field goal by Troy Westwood and a 112-yard return of a missed field goal for a touchdown by Arland Bruce, converted by Mr. Westwood. B.C. recovered a Winnipeg fumble deep in Blue Bomber territory, but had to settle for a 31-yard field goal by Matt Kellett with 2:26 remaining in the 1st quarter. There was no further scoring until the 3rd quarter, when Mr. Westwood kicked a 47-yard field goal and converted a touchdown by Jamie Stoddard, who caught a 10-yard pass from Khari Jones. Mr. Westwood added another FG in the 4th quarter and converted the TD by Mr. Roberts. The Blue Bombers rushed for 255 yards, while Mr. Jones completed 13 of 21 passes for 145 yards. It was the last game for Adam Rita as head coach of the Lions, and the last game for quarterback Damon Allen in a B.C. uniform. He completed 20 of 39 passes for 253 yards and 2 interceptions, and rushed 4 times for just 5 yards. The game ended with an idiot Winnipeg fan running onto the field and attacking B.C. cornerback Eric Carter. Mr. Carter and several of his teammates responded by pummelling the fan, who was charged with disorderly conduct.
