Enos, 6
. U.S. astrochimp. Enos, purchased by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration from the Miami Rare Bird Farm in 1960, was the first American to orbit Earth, making 2 orbits in Mercury-Atlas 5 on November 29, 1961. He was subjected to tests that delivered a foor pellet if he pressed the correct switch, and an electric shock if he pulled the wrong switch. There was a malfunction, and Enos received dozens of shocks regardless of which switch he pulled. By the time the crew of the retrieval ship USS Stormes reached him, Enos had yanked all the sensors from his body, as well as a urinary catheter. He died of a form of dysentery called shigellosis; his remains were examined, but disappeared, and were apparently discarded--hardly a fitting ending for an American space pioneer.
