Robert Mackenzie, 10th Baronet Mackenzie, 62
. U.K.-born Australian politician. Sir Robert moved to Sydney in 1832, and was an unsuccessful businessman. He represented Burnett in the Queensland Legislative Assembly (1860-1869), serving as Treasurer (1859-1862, 1867-1868) and Premier of Queensland (1867-1868). Sir Robert succeeded his late brother William as Baron Mackenzie in 1868; he returned to the family estate in Scotland, and died there.

Alexander Tilloch Galt, 76
. U.K.-born Canadian politician. Sir Alexander, a native of Chelsea, England, was Inspector-General of Canada in the Great Coalition government of 1864-1867, and was a Father of Confederation in 1867. He represented Sherbrooke, Quebec in the House of Commons from 1867-1872 and served as Canada's first Minister of Finance from July 1-November 7, 1867, and as Canada's first High Commissioner in London from 1880-1893.

Frances Farmer
. U.S. actress. Miss Farmer was a promising actress in films such as Rhythm on the Range (1936) and Come and Get It (1936), but her life took a turn for the worse, and she became notorious for arrests and long stays in mental hospitals. She eventually recovered enough to resume a limited acting career, and hosted the anthology series Frances Farmer Presents on the Indianapolis television station WFBM (1958-1964). Miss Farmer died of esophageal cancer on August 1, 1970 at the age of 56.

Helen Ward. U.S. singer. Miss Ward sang with Benny Goodman's band in the mid-1930s, and later with the bands of Hal McIntyre and Harry James. She died on April 21, 1998 at the age of 84.

Pauline Frederick, 55
. U.S. actress. Miss Frederick, born Beatrice Pauline Libbey, was a stage actress in the early 20th century who also acted in films. Most of her movies were silent and are now lost, but she can still be seen in movies such as This Modern Age (1931) and Thank You, Mr. Moto (1937). Miss Frederick died of an asthma attack.

The U.S. Navy claimed that it now had the "greatest sea-air power on earth," consisting of 14,072 vessels totalling almost 5 million tons. A German U-boat attack sank eight or more Allied vessels--including three warships--of a 70-ship Allied convoy in the Atlantic Ocean. Soviet troops captured more than 1,200 settlements as they swept westward along the entire front, particularly menacing the German forces at Smolensk and Kiev. Italian troops collaborating with the Allies attacked the Germans in Sardinia, forcing a German retreat toward Corsica. Allied forces conducted heavy raids on Japanese bases on Tarawa Island in the north Gilbert group, and on Nauru, 80 miles northeast of Guadalcanal.

Labour
Decca Records, Inc. and its transcription subsidiary World Broadcasting System reached an agreement with the American Federation of Musicians to resume making records and transcriptions.

Lou Kusserow rushed 1 yard for a touchdown and Tip Logan added a convert and 2 field goals as the Tiger-Cats defeated the Argonauts before 20,382 fans at Varsity Stadium. Don Panciera replaced injured Nobby Wirkowski as the Toronto quarterback and completed 25 of 43 passes, including a touchdown to Al Pfeifer. Mr. Panciera was released by the Argonauts a few days later.

Bud Tinsley blocked 2 converts, the second coming with 1 1/2 minutes remaining in the game, as the Blue Bombers edged the Stampeders before a record crowd of 16,658 at Winnipeg Stadium. Bud Grant and Tom Casey scored Winnipeg touchdowns, with Bud Korchak adding 2 converts, a field goal, and a single. John Henry Johnson, Sugarfoot Anderson, and Pete Thodos scored the Calgary touchdowns. Stan Kaluznick was unsuccessful on all 3 convert attempts, with the first and third being blocked by Mr. Tinsley. Mr. Kaluznick also missed his only field goal attempt.

Billy Vessels scored 2 touchdowns, one on an 86-yard rush, as the Eskimos defeated the Roughriders before 13,024 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Wilbur Snyder converted both Edmonton touchdowns. The Roughriders broke the shutout in the last minute on a touchdown pass from Glenn Dobbs to Del Wardien.

Dutch Davey's field goal in the last minute gave the Imperial their victory over the Mustangs at J.W. Little Memorial Stadium in London.

The Redmen easily defeated the Thunderbirds at Molson Stadium in a game whose proceeds were donated to the Canadian Paraplegic Association. The Redmen were awarded the Churchill Cup in an exhibition game between McGill and UBC that became an annual tradition for the next several years.

Gram Parsons, 26
. U.S. musician. Mr. Parsons, born Ingram Cecil Connor III, was a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist, who was influential in both country and rock music. He founded the International Submarine Band in 1966, who recorded one album before disbanding. In 1968, Mr. Parsons joined the Byrds and was a major influence on their album Sweetheart of the Rodeo, released later that year. He left the Byrds after just a few months, and in 1969, with fellow Byrd Chris Hillman, formed the Flying Burrito Brothers, a country group, who recorded two album in 1969-1970 before Mr. Parsons left the group. Overindulgence in drugs and alcohol ruined Mr. Parsons' life and career, but he was able to reduce his substance use enough to record two solo albums before his death of an overdose of morphine and alcohol.

The Roughriders scored 2 touchdowns in the last 6 minutes of the game to defeat the Argonauts before a sellout crowd of 33,135 at CNE Stadium. Saskatchewan trailed 15-7 after 3 quarters, but quarterback Ron Lancaster threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Thompson with 5:54 remaining in the game and handed off to fullback George Reed for a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:14 remaining. Mr. Lancaster scored the first Saskatchewan touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 16 seconds left in the 1st half. Bill Symons rushed 1 yard for the first Toronto touchdown in the 1st quarter, and Joe Theismann threw a 15-yard TD pass to Peter Muller in the 3rd quarter. The biggest play for the Argonauts was a pass from Mr. Theismann to Eric Allen that covered 100 yards from the Toronto 5-yard line to the Saskatchewan 5; it remains the longest non-touchdown pass completion in CFL history. It was the final CFL game for Saskatchewan linebacker Jerry Griffin, who had spent all but the last 2 games of his 7-year career with the Edmonton Eskimos.

Tracy Ham, who relieved injured starter Reggie Slack at quarterback in the 1st quarter, rushed for 2 touchdowns and passed 61 yards to Robert Clark for another as the Argonauts upset the Blue Bombers before 28,915 fans at SkyDome. It was the first game for Bob O'Billovich, who had been Toronto's head coach from 1982-1989, as head coach of the Argonauts since replacing the fired Dennis Meyer. Winnipeg quarterback Matt Dunigan threw touchdown passes to Nathaniel Bolton and Gerald Wilcox.

Kent Austin's 12-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Fairholm in the 4th quarter broke a 20-20 tie as the Roughriders defeated the Gold Miners before 25,367 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Mr. Austin also threw a touchdown pass to Tre Everett and handed off to Mike Saunders for another TD. Sacramento quarterback David Archer completed touchdown passes of 4 yards to Troy Mills and 83 yards to Freeman Baysinger in the 3rd quarter.

Ricky Ray completed 21 of 24 passes for 339 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushed for another TD as the Eskimos built a 35-7 halftime lead and hung on to beat the Renegades before 35,264 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. Rick Walters caught Mr. Ray's first touchdown pass, with the other 2 going to Ed Hervey. Mr. Hervey's second TD came with 13 seconds remaining in the 1st half. Sean Fleming's kickoff hung up in the air, and when the Ottawa returner slipped and was unable to get to the ball, Rob Grant of the Eskimos, who was downfield to provide coverage, recovered on the Ottawa 23-yard line, and ran uncontested into the Ottawa end zone, giving the Eskimos 2 touchdowns in just 4 seconds, a CFL record for the fastest 2 touchdowns. Troy Mills rushed 5 yards for the other Edmonton touchdown in the 4th quarter. Ottawa quarterback Kerry Joseph completed 23 of 43 passes for 299 yards and 2 touchdowns to D.J. Flick and a 2-point convert to Yo Murphy, but gave up 3 interceptions. Josh Ranek of the Renegades led all rushers with 12 carries for 83 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter.
