Henry Jackson, 71
. U.S. politician. Mr. Jackson, nicknamed "Scoop," was a Democrat who represented the state of Washington in the United States House of Representatives from 1941-1953 and in the United States Senate from 1953 until his death. He was one of the last anti-Communist Democrats to still hold office, and supported the defense industries that were located in his home state. Mr. Jackson was also a strong advocate of civil rights for Negroes, and voted in favour of the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1964. He co-sponsored, with Charles Vanik (Democrat--Ohio) from the House of Representatives, the Jackson-Vanik amendment in 1974, a provision in Title IV of the 1974 Trade Act, denying most favoured nation status to countries with non-market economies that restricted emigration. The amendment was mainly aimed at the U.S.S.R., which was restricting emigration of Jews. Mr. Jackson died of an aortic aneurysm in his home town of Everett just after holding a press conference denouncing the Soviet attack on Korean Air Lines Flight 007.

Larry McDonald, 48. U.S. politician. Dr. McDonald, a urologist and surgeon by occupation, was a Democrat who represented Georgia's 7th District in the United States House of Representatives from 1975 until his death aboard Korean Air Lines Flight 007. Diplomacy
Two days of testimony from prominent Americans before the U.S. National Bipartisan Commission on Central America concluded. Former President Gerald Ford said that both external and internal factors were to blame for the region's problems, and that the United States should think in terms of long-term solutions. Former President Jimmy Carter urged a policy of alleviating economic and social suffering as a means of checking Communist subversion. Former Secretary of State Cyrus Vance favoured a political rather than a military solution, ascribing unrest to internal problems, while former Secretary of State Alexander Haig blamed outside agitation. Former Secretaries of State Dean Rusk and William Rogers also testified before the Commission.

The Stampeders deserved their win over the Eskimos at McMahon Stadium, but it was one of the most poorly-officiated games this blogger has ever seen. In the 1st quarter, Edmonton's Sean Fleming kicked a field goal that was straight through the uprights, but the official ruled it wide, and Calgary's Wane McGarity ran it back 126 yards for a touchdown as the Eskimos appeared to let up on the play. In the 4th quarter, the Stampeders instigated a brawl, but the Eskimos got the worst of the penalties, and referee Dave Yule and his crew lost control of the game. Edmonton wide receiver Ed Hervey took off his helmet and accidentally hit and knocked down line judge Brent Buchko, for which he was suspended for one game--and rightly so. However, Calgary defensive back Davis Sanchez grabbed Mr. Yule by his jersey and twirled him around--and didn't even receive a penalty.
