The Edmonton Eskimos released veteran flanker Bobby Taylor, ostensibly because his speed had diminished, and not because of a reported incident in which he had thrown a beer bottle at quarterback Bruce Lemmerman in a hotel room after the team's 28-27 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina two days earlier. Mr. Taylor disputed the official reason for his dismissal. He had joined the team in mid-season of 1971; in 6 games in 1973 he had caught 17 passes for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Stampeders scored 10 points in the final 1:05 of the game to shock the Eskimos before 30,841 fans at McMahon Stadium. Edmonton held a 15-8 lead with less than 3 minutes remaining and had possession of the ball at the Calgary 38-yard line, but rookie running back Scott Stauch didn't hear the play call on a pitchout from quarterback Warren Moon, and the ball resulted in a fumble recovered by the Eskimos but for a 17-yard loss. A short punt into the wind by Paul Hickie resulted in a no-yards penalty, and quarterback Gerry Dattilio complete a 43-yard pass to Craig Ellis for a touchdown, converted by J.T. Hay, to tie the game with 1:05 remaining. The Eskimos had just 9 players on the field for the subsequent kickoff, failed to move the ball, and Calgary took possession and moved into position for Mr. Hay to kick a 45-yard field goal--his third FG of the game--on the last play to win the game. Bryan Fryer scored the only Edmonton touchdown in the 2nd quarter on a 13-yard pass from Mr. Moon, while Dave Cutler added field goals of 48 and 52 yards. Rookie Edmonton running back Greg Marshall, who had spent the first 1 1/2 seasons of his CFL career on the injured list with a right knee injury, finally dressed for his first regular season game, playing on special teams. Unfortunately, he tore up his left knee after just a few plays, and never played again. The game was the last for Pete Kettela as head coach of the Eskimos; he was fired two days later and replaced by Jackie Parker.
Tom Clements' fourth touchdown pass of the game, a 52-yard strike to Keith Baker with 2:40 remaining in the 4th quarter, provided the winning margin as the Tiger-Cats defeated the Concordes before 18,527 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Mr. Baker's touchdown was his second TD reception of the game, with Johnny Shepherd and Ron Johnson also catching touchdown passes. Montreal quarterback Johnny Evans threw touchdown passes to Jeff Patterson and Nick Arakgi and handed off to Denny Ferdinand for a 21-yard TD run. Mr. Shepherd rushed 18 times for 138 yards, caught 6 passes for 35, and returned 3 kickoffs for 76.
